Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's "Knightmare" sequence has been confusing fans for the past four years, but director Zack Snyder has now shared some details about how the Flash's trip back in time was meant to create a new timeline Justice League 2 was set to explore.

Based on what the filmmaker says here, it would have been a tad convoluted, but a necessity after the Man of Steel had succumbed to the effects of Darkseid's Anti-Life Equation.

"I had this idea that in the future when [the Justice League] are talking about sending Flash back to warn [Bruce Wayne], that Cyborg would be doing the calculations to send him back and would say 'I have two possibilities of where to send Flash back in time."

"The numbers point to two moments to warn you [Bruce].' Like, if it's right near the moment when this event might happen - where Lois might get killed, or Bruce isn't able to stop it, however that's happening - it would be important if Flash came closer to that moment so that Bruce could understand the reality of it," the director continued.

"And so in the future Bruce says to Cyborg 'Well, what times would you send me back to...What time right now would you send me back?' And Cyborg says 'I'm leaning toward this.' And Bruce says 'Do the other one, because you already sent him back here and it was too early - so send me to the other one.' So that's how he's able to get [the Flash] back again."

In other words, a new timeline would have been created which saw the Flash warn Superman about Lois Lane's demise, something he would have understood at that point, thereby helping that Batman stop this desolate future from becoming a reality. Or, as Snyder puts it, "in the new timeline he goes to a different point in time that's closer to the event that we haven't seen yet in this film."

This is perhaps the most in-depth explanation we've had about Snyder's Justice League 2 plans, and it's clear the filmmaker had ambitious plans for his sequel. Regardless of what happens with the Snyder Cut, we'll never get to see this follow-up, so his plans for the DC Extended Universe are never actually going to become a reality on the big screen.

What do you guys think about these new details about the unfilmed sequel?

Why would Flash say something cryptic in the first place like "Lois is the key" if it were an actual warning.

He should've said something like "Bruce, somebody killed Lois at this time and this place. You've got to stop it or Superman will go crazy". Keep it simple Flash...

Ok at this point I'll admit I'd watch the 'Snyder Cut'...maybe even pay about $3.50. Maybe Batfleck has a more dignified arc in this one.

@johnnymarr - Man of Steel was pretty good

@dracula - Reasonably entertaining, but full of glaring flaws. It could have been better in the hands of a director with a firm grasp on the fundamentals of storytelling and character development.

At this point, this is as close to a Justice League movie as us fans will ever get, because it doesn't look like WB has any plans on making a JL film, any day soon. That being said, we deserved better than the Just us League movie.

@BlackIceJoe - Yeah, in a world where their solo Batman movies make more money than their teamup movies, that's not surprising.

@soberchimera - Well said. I will add this though, I'm surprised WB hasn't made a Batfamily universe of movies.

Seeing as JL movies aren't in the pipeline, you could do a Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, Batwoman, Batwing or Azrael films, then bring them together in a group movie.

@BlackIceJoe - at least we have the animated series, and for the first 2 seasons every episode was like a mini movie when you combine all the two parters

Mr. Snyder, you forced the Ezra Miller-Flash upon us and for that...

@tmp3 - I am not a fan of the current Sivana. He is supposed to be a little nerdy guy. Current one looks like a bad ass. Also not a fan of Don Cheadle as Rhodey. Good actor, just not the right fit. Never once have I thought War Machine was a bad ass that he should be. Not a fan of Drax yet. He kind of plays Drax as a moron and not the tortured soul that Drax is. First movie was ok, but after that he is more about being invisible than thinking about his family. Probably more a scripting issue but I don't believe Batista has the range needed.

@GarthRanzz - Current Sivana is 100% comics accurate to the Geoff Johns run on Shazam! Also all those choices are tenfold better than ezra [frick]in miller

There's been three versions of Drax, and two were pretty much idiots. One that was so single-minded in his mission to end Thanos that he'd be just as much a liability to the good guys as he would be an asset, and one that swallowed an Infinity Gem because he thought it was a Jelly Bean.
