EDITORIAL: Should Christian Bale's Batman Be Included In JUSTICE LEAGUE?

Fans seem divided when it comes to whether or not they would like to see Christian Bale return as Batman in the planned Justice League film, but here are just a few arguments as to why it might, and might NOT, work.

Until Man of Steel is released, we have no idea whether or not that will be the beginning of a shared universe for Warner Bros. and their stable of DC Comics superheroes. Many fans expected that 2011's Green Lantern would be the start of exactly that (especially with rumours of a cameo for Clark Kent) but no such luck. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan's Batman universe (affectionately termed the "Nolanverse") has always stood by itself. Arguably, this makes the most sense, especially as it's nearly impossible to imagine Ryan Reynolds' Hal Jordan appearing in this version of Gotham City. However, does it mean that Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne/Batman couldn't and shouldn't have a role in the planned Justice League movie? Of course, to some extent, this will ultimately depend on whether or not Nolan really does end up killing off the Caped Crusader in the third and final instalment of his trilogy, but if he does survive, I for one see no reason why he can't still appear in the team-up, despite how unlikely it may seem.

Why is it unlikely? Well, Bale has repeatedly said in the past that he wouldn't return for a fourth Batman movie without Nolan. However, Justice League ISN'T one, and would come with what one can only imagine would be a pretty massive pay cheque. With the right creative talent involved (Bale is a hell of an actor, but not exactly immune to being tempted into blockbuster fare such as Terminator Salvation) there's no reason why the Welsh actor wouldn't at least consider getting back into the cowl for a film which would have no trouble being equally as big, if not bigger than, Marvel's The Avengers. Unfortunately, there are many other factors to take into account which make this hard to imagine happening. If Man of Steel is indeed the first film to feature a shared universe, Warner Bros. will more than likely want to reboot Batman, and bringing back an actor who refuses to appear in another solo film isn't the best of situations for them. On the other hand, bringing back the star of a billion dollar franchise for Justice League would be a huge draw, especially if Henry Cavill impresses audiences next year (meaning they could then fill out the cast with lesser known actors for characters like Aquaman and Wonder Woman before giving them their own solo movies).

While the "Bat-voice" may not be to everyone's tastes, Bale has been an incredible Batman, so it's hard to NOT want to see his version of the iconic superhero as part of Justice League. Yes, there are many other actors out there who could play the character, and it would make a lot of sense in the respect that it would lead into a new series of Batman films. The thing is, Warner Bros. don't seem to be anywhere near as on the ball as Marvel Studios are when it comes to this whole shared universe thing. For that reason, who's to say that they won't make a Justice League which stands separately from the solo movies? When you start thinking about it like that though, it gets far too confusing, especially for the regular movie-goer. The fact is that at this point, a Justice League movie still feels like a very, VERY long way away. There are a lot of factors which may end up influencing whether it's possible for Bale to be a part of the film, but hopefully they can find a way of making it work. You know what would be an even better idea? A Christian Bale/Henry Cavill Batman/Superman team-up which itself is completely separate from Justice League. A fan can dream, eh?

So, these are just some of the reasons why Christian Bale's return as Batman in Justice League may or many not work, but what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below and stay tuned to CBM over the next couple of weeks for more interview with the actor (hopefully SOMEONE will ask the actor whether he would actually like to be a part of Justice League).

I've enjoyed Bale's Batman. I would like to see a Batman closer to the comics though. Some variation of that and Bale's Batman would be fine.

WB/DC........START A SHARED UNIVERSE. NOW!!!!!

In the end any justice league movie would have way more fantasy then a Nolan bat flick, bale just wouldn't fit in that universe

@jduke These movies were as close to the comic as its gonna get with out becoming the Clooney version

LOL two of America's biggest superheroes being played by brits in one movie might be hard for some americans to swallow, especially after the way some of the people on here reacted to Cavills casting. Fox news would be all over this, which brings back the memories of them being worried by the british invasion.

Domino steps of reality, people.
Just because a Justice League film could never fit into the Nolanverse does not mean that the Nolanverse could never fit into a Justice League film. Christiphor Nolan knows this and knows that it is also out of his hands whether or not Bale reprises the role of Batman in any movie not directed by Nolan. That is why the Dark Knight trilogy is Nolan's version, because they are directed by him. It's a self contained trilogy. I mean, a lot of fans never felt the Schumacher films belonged to the Burton films, despite having crossover actors.

@thatdylhooper yeah, but the things you see Batman do in the comics you don't really see Batman do on film. Being more acrobatic and using different moves and gadgets in battle.

Nice write up, anyways. I'd like to see Batman be recasted for the JLA.

JDuke25@ And, conversely, a lot of the things Batman does in the Nolan films would be entirely unrealistic in the Earth One universe.

The Dark Knight trilogy Batman doesn't have the intelligence to be in the JLA because in the comics Batman is suppose to be a genius that is three steps ahead of everyone else.

No his batman doesnt work in justice leauge. Bale's batman is just a man with money and fighting skills. Justice league batman has to be physcal and mental peeks and much more gadgets

No he shouldn't, I think the Batman they use for the JLA movie should be in his early 30's & he should be the one that brings them together. Not because he wants to but because he knows that's the only way to stop whatever threat they are facing. He should be cold, calculating, & smart as a whip like he is in Young Justice! (and no crappy voice either!)

Is that really a question? Hell yes it should be included. DC films wouldn't be squat right now without Christian Bale's Batman.

Bale in Justice League would be ok if they rebooted his bat voice.

That pic is fine but I am not a fan of the Superman is a Ahole concept.

I don't see why everyone says it wouldn't work. Anything is possible. It would make it even better that all these characters are completely different and think there world is there own. How would batman try and keep up with superman?

But Bale has done a fantastic job

@thatdylhooper have you ever actually read a Batman comic? because they are nothing like Nolan's films.

They need to re-do it. The Bale Batman wouldn't last in the justice League. I can't picture Superman or Wonder Woman letting him join the group. They would need to make him more powerful, or more intelligent rather. Now he's just a really good fighter and he's very rich. He needs to be the best a man can possibly be trained and smarter than anybody else on the planet (with the exception of maybe Lex Luthor).

I think they should let Nolan's brilliant interpretation of Bruce Wayne be self-contained. It's a transcendent series even if Rises turns out to be mediocre.

Besides, we all know this isn't going to happen so I don't see why this piece was even written.

Bale is not a good batman...I don't understand people...

The Nolan movies are great movies, but they're not great BATMAN movies. They don't come anywhere CLOSE to understanding the real character of Batman. He's whiny, tiny, has no menacing presence to him, and the suit is all kinds of wrong. They nailed everything else...the villains, the plots, the tone, Alfred, even Bruce Wayne to an extent, but Batman in these movies is a joke. He's kind of an idiot... and he has no detective skills. It's close, but I'm so glad they're gonna get a chance to redeem the character when Nolan leaves.

My 2 cents.

Or Warner Brothers could just have two or three of the justice league in a movie. It would be great if any Btaman they have in the future would be similar to Christan Bales Batman.
