The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent star Nicolas Cage has weighed in on the recent Marvel movie backlash that's been doing the rounds, and, not too surprisingly, the lifelong comic book fan is firmly in the corner of superhero cinema.

Over the past few years, several legendary directors such as Martin Scorsese and Cage's uncle Francis Ford Coppola have bemoaned the comic book movie boom, dismissing superhero films as little more than "theme park rides" and blaming their surge in popularity for the current state of the film industry.

“Yeah, why do they do that?” Cage responded to GQ when asked about the trend of bashing Marvel and comic book films. “I don’t understand the conflict. I don’t agree with them on that perception or opinion.”

“Marvel has done a really excellent job of entertaining the whole family," he continued. "They put a lot of thought into it. I mean, it’s definitely had a big progression from when I was doing the first two Ghost Rider movies. Kevin Feige, or whoever is behind that machine, has found a masterful way of weaving the stories together and interconnecting all the characters.”

“What could be wrong with wholesome entertainment that is appealing to the parents and the children, and gives people something to look forward to?” the Kick-Ass star added. “I just, I don’t see what the issue is.”

As Cage mentions, he played Ghost Rider in two rather underwhelming movies back in 2007 and 2011, but has yet to make the leap into The MCU. There have been rumors that he might return as the Spirit of Vengeance for this year's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but even if that is on the agenda, he's not about to give anything away.

“Oh, I don’t think so. I don’t think they’re casting me. I mean, I would do it. It would be fun. I’d love to work with Cumberbatch, but I don’t think that’s happening.”

What do you make of Cage's comments? Let us know in the usual place, and be sure to head on over to FearHQ.com to get a first look at the actor in costume as Dracula on the set of Renfield!

@BlackBeltJones - I'm pretty sure that at least 20% of all Nic Cage movies are just the directors telling the second unit camera crew to keep filming and it's just footage of Cage being Cage.

Exactly Mr. Cage.

Blockbuster movies keep the industry alive, which helps all other Movies.

There's this weird thing where people think "this billion dollar movie is taking money away from the independent film"... When generally they actually help.

Ultimately, I think it is a thinly veiled swipe at audiences that choose big movies over small. And it shows a disrespect to the movie going public.

@ossie85 - Man this is exactly what I’ve been saying. I’m sorry for all those indie film lovers (I am one of them).. but do you really think there would still be cinema if all we had was Scorcese films, independent dramas or surrealist Buñuel type films?… there would be zero money coming into the industry.. as great as they are and as much I love them it’s the truth. The reason I love most Comic Book films is that they actually give us well made stories with a lot of talent both on and behind the screen, yes there are clichés, yes they mostly follow a formula but I really don’t care if they are good.

@ossie85 -
1) This isn't about indies. This is about small-mid budget studio films that aren't getting made anymore because all the money goes to low effort, bloated budget franchises.

2) The "movie going public" DESERVES to be disrespected if they're going to keep shuffling into idiocracy by refusing to take in anything other than the most shallow entertainment.

@SerKurtWagner - there's so much content being produced in film and TV. There are literally 100s of films produced a year (probably thousand with foreign language factored in), and hundreds of shows being produced that are very accessible. I find it hard to believe that people can't find stuff they like, regardless of taste.

@SerKurtWagner -

you operate under the assumption all small-mid budget films would even be of merit.

while i agree that the business unevenly distributes funds for projects, people seem to act as if there wasn't complete pablum being released on a regular basis in decades prior. where was this vitriol then?
SerKurtWagner
SerKurtWagner - 3/23/2022, 11:06 PM
@ossie85 - And how many of those are getting wide releases in theaters? How many are getting marketing pushes? How many are getting seen by people outside of the art film community?

@SerKurtWagner - the fact they are being made, and have been for years, suggests they are in a viable business model.

@Moriakum - It becomes the only content getting money, that's what goes wrong. It dumbs down society when we're only watching "family pictures," that's what goes wrong. etc... etc...
Skrull

@SerKurtWagner - Perhaps the reason genre films are making the lion's share of the box office is because other movies are not appealing to the public. Many smaller movies are deliberately aimed at a niche audience, and will not earn much regardless of critical acclaim. Others simply can't attract interest for one reason or another. The fault is not with the audience when such movies tank. It's just the way the marketplace works.
SerKurtWagner
SerKurtWagner - 3/23/2022, 11:15 PM
@Skrull - No, the fault is absolutely with the audience if they're only going to see generic franchise blockbusters. These movies aren't any more "niche" than they were 30, even 20 years ago, when stuff like The Godfather was topping the box office, it's the market that's turned its brain off to anything beyond an incredibly narrow, unchallenging box. And this should be concerning both as artists/fans/and members of society in general.

A lot of movies that were treated as just spectacle entertaiment when they were released are seen as all-time classics now and the directors currently crapping on the superhero movies were crapped on themselves by the generation of directors before them back in the day.

These things go in circles.

I’ve been saying it forever but Nic Cage is a goddamn awesome actor. Yeah, he has done some shlock, but that’s almost every actor anyways.

He respects comic books, he actually reads them, and he still churns out fantastic performances like he has recently in Pig. On top of that, he’s not super self serious and can take a joke. I respect the guy as both an actor and as a person.
