Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce Wonder Man, but we've heard enough from the trades to know the series is happening. Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast as Wonder Man, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is executive producing, so the talent involved is incredibly exciting.
ComicBook.com recently caught up with Marvel Studios producer Stephen Broussard and asked what, if anything, he can share about the upcoming Disney+ series.
"Destin is doing a television show for us called Wonder Man. I think that's out there in the world," he started, jokingly confirming the obvious. "[Wonder Man will] be definitely influenced by the comics. One of the things that we're excited about it is that it's going to feel very unique. It's not going to feel like anything you've quite seen in the MCU before."
"And the kind of stories we can tell on Disney+, which has been fun. Like streaming, serialized storytelling is a totally different muscle. So, we're having a blast making that one."
Wonder Man is expected to put a subversive, MCU-style spin on Hollywood, and Sir Ben Kingsley has been tapped to reprise his Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings role as thespian Trevor Slattery. There have also been rumblings that Marvel Studios is eyeing Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk for a "special role."
Scream and Friends legend Courtney Cox is also thought to be in talks for the series, though it's been a while since we've heard anything about further casting additions.
Andrew Guest serves as Head Writer, and his credits include hit TV shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, 30 Rock, and Community, and Guest is set to serve as Head Writer. As noted, Cretton will executive produce, but is likely direct a few episodes.
Wonder Man made his Marvel Comics debut in the pages of Avengers #9 in 1964. Initially a villain, he was later retconned and became a hero (and an Avenger) in the 1970s. His brother is the Grim Reaper, while it was his brainwaves that were used by Ultron as a basis for The Vision; later, he would join the West Coast Avengers and become a Hollywood star.
Wonder Man is expected to premiere on Disney+ in 2024.
