A CBM Year In Review: The Best And Worst of 2011

We had some great comic book based movies this year, and some not so great. Click to see which I held in high regard and which I slap in the face with a glove and challenge to a duel..

As 2011 comes to a close it's time to look back at a year of surprises and disappointments in the world of the CBM. This year saw four big superhero based comic book movies as well as a few smaller ones, and I'm also going to include some movies that have spawned spin off comics even if they didn't begin life that way, such as Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. Anyway, lets start with three of the best, in no particular order of quality.

X-Men: First Class.

For me this was probably not only the best CBM of the year but one of the best movies period. It surprised a lot of people who had written it off as just another Fox X movie that disregards comic continuity - and of course, it did a little! In fact it disregarded the previous movie's continuity in some ways too. But what it got right was spot on incarnations of two of the most iconic Marvel characters in history. Sure some of the supporting cast and characters are not as impressive (January Jones is bordering on awful), but overall we were treated to a well thought out, even moving superhero drama, that didn't feel the need to pander to ADHD audiences by sticking an action sequence in every 10 minutes whether it was called for or not.

Thor

I must admit that I wasn't expecting too much from Kenneth Branagh's Thor from the trailers we had seen. I thought it would just be an entertaining but forgettable romp. And I was partly right, it is a romp, but it's VERY entertaining and memorable! The movie's success is mainly once again down to Marvel's knack for choosing the best leading man. As Thor Chris Hemsworth display just the right amount of arrogance and likability to keep us invested in his story. He is amply supported by Tom Hiddleston as the villainous, but somewhat relatable Loki. It's a bit silly at times, and the final act loses momentum. Plus Natalie Portman's character exists for literally no other reason that to give Thor someone pretty to latch onto while on Earth. But despite the problems Thor was a big success imo.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

I think this one must have knocked everyone for a loop. Although the trailers were great, the last time we saw any of these clever simians on screen was in Tim Burton's awful remake. So when this turned out to work as not only an action packed sci-fi flick but a real emotional drama too, it was a very pleasant surprise. Andy Serkis has established himself as the king of motion capture with good reason, here he delivers another astounding performance as Caesar. Simply put, a great movie. If you still haven't seen it sort it out!

Honorable mentions: Captain America: TFA, Super 8, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Pt 2.

Now time for three of the worst. I only consider one of these movies to be really awful, but we only have a limited amount of CBMs to work from and something has to go in the bad pile. That being said none of these are good either so don't feel too sorry for them!

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon

I really don't know what to say about this because once I begin ranting I might not stop. Let's just say I find it difficult to even classify this as a movie at all. It's more a random collection of images from the mind of a juvenile sleazebag that has fooled the world into believing he is a film director. Terrible acting, terrible script, nonsensical plot, laughable attempts at drama. Oh sorry, it looks good, with great action scenes. And? What are explosions and battles worth when there is no risk or threat? Even if there was something on the line these characters are so annoying it's hard to care anyway. I'm sure we will get this in the comments section: "What were you expecting, an Oscar winner - it's a movie based on a toy" etc etc. Correction, it's a [frick]ing terrible movie based on a toy.

Green Lantern

Ah poor Hal Jordan, you deserved so much better. I almost feel bad taking shots at a movie that has been ridiculed since it's release, especially since it's really not QUITE as bad as many make it out to be. But it is bad. Why? A mixture of bad choices and a really awful script I think. Ryan Reynolds is actually pretty decent as Hal, he just has to do lost of really stupid and silly things so we end up hating him. But he has no support at all - Blake Lively injects no life at all into Carol Ferris and Peter Sarsgaard is a bizarre, screeching annoyance as the villain. The only real bright spot is Mark Strong as Sinestro, but he gets nowhere near enough screen time and even if he did he wouldn't have saved this I'm afraid.

Cowboys & Aliens

Technically a competently made film, but John Favreau's Sci-Fi/Western commits the biggest movie crime of all: It's boring, It's bland, it's forgettable. It's also predictable, but let's be honest if we leveled that charge at every CBM the "best of" list would be empty. Daniel Craig might have been decent in this, I couldn't tell because every time his character was on screen I dozed off. Likewise Harrison Ford's. But get them together and there will be sparks right? Wrong, zero chemistry. I just didn't care about anyone and wanted the Aliens to win. That can't be a good sign! There is a great supporting cast here too, with Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell and Clancy Brown and they are all wasted too. I have heard some people say they enjoyed thsi so maybe I'm being too harsh, all I know is there is no way I'm giving it another chance to find out.

Dishonorable mentions: Priest, Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Conan The Barbarian

Agree? Disagree? Lets hear why, and feel free to post your own best/worst of the year lists below.

Well... Um.. I kinda liked TF:DOTM but it just felt like a long episode and it had no real ending.

X:FC was the least anticipated comic book movie and (imho) turned out to be the best CBM. I'm hoping for the same with amazing spider-man.

I thought Green Lantern, Transformers 3 and Cowboys & Aliens were very underrated critically. While all of them were far from perfect (and definitely disappointing, especially GL ), but personally I enjoyed them all. DOTM could've had 20 minutes or so shaved off, GL could've used a decent script and more scenes set in space, and C&A had some hit-and-miss plot points.

I was definitely surprised by First Class and Rise Of The Apes, I wasn't expecting much at all until I saw the trailers. Even then, both movies blew me away with how good they were. Probably the best CBMs of the year next to Captain America.

Personally I think Captain America: The First Avenger was the best film of the year. Close second was X-Men First Class which I wasn't expecting anything from. On the Green Lantern it was a disappointment but nowhere near as bad as people made out.

Benjamitesandwich - 12/29/2011, 1:00 PM
And Captain America?

Cap gets an honorable mention, I enjoyed it but thought Thor, First Class and Apes were better. Had I did 4 movies it would have made the cut but we didn't really have that many so 4 in each category may as well encompass them all!
spiderneil
spiderneil - 12/29/2011, 1:05 PM
captain america just fizzles out at the end almost like the climax is in the middle and they didn't know how to end it. imho the movie loses momentum when he changes into cap, everything before hand is GOLD.
Spectre94
Spectre94 - 12/29/2011, 1:05 PM
I personally think Cap was better than Thor. I really liked Chris Hemsworth as Thor, but the movie on a whole wasn't very good. But I didn't think Cowboys & Aliens was that bad. I found it pretty enjoyable. But, everyone is entitled to their own opinion

Yeah well see I couldn't really get through Conan! Just watched the first 20 mins of so so didn't think it was fair to include it, I just added it ti dishonorable mentions though.

Spideyquad, yes, I thought it was pretty bad dude.

@ yossarian

personally speaking I thought X:FC was great because it explored loss, friendship, bigotary, and acceptance of your appearance. really powerful themes. the action was just the cheery on a delicious cake.

for me X:FC is the top 5 best superhero movies ever made.

I liked the majority of films on in this article. GL should have been a lot better, but it was still okay. I didn't find Cowboys and Aliens boring, I quite enjoyed it.

I'd say XMFC was the best film this year, at least for me. Maybe it's because I expected it to be terrible and was shocked after the film ended. (Everyone clapped at the end, which I haven't seen happen since TDK.)

Thor was great. Planet of the Apes was great. Cap was good too. TF3 was a huge improvement over TF2. But still I got bored in some parts of it.

everyone has there own taste for movies I thought green Lantern was really good Alien @ cowboys was good too of course I thought Jonah Hex wasn't all bad it has it's shortcommings (F-UP origin tale and rotten storyline)
as you all will know some good movies are dismal failures at the box office while fans rejoice for them they didn't appeal enough to the general public...
they need to hook non fans as well to succed if they don't we always blame the studio for messing it up or bad direction take your pick

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for identifying the elephant in the room. Despite its box odfice take, Transformers was absolute rubbish. It's was like a long commercial for a really bad video game. Unbelievably bad.

I like Planet of the Apes the most and Cowboys and Aliens the least. Of all the movies mentioned on this list the only ones that I liked alot were PotA, X-men and Harry Potter....Captain America and Super 8 were pretty decenr....the rest were, IMO, garbage!

I still can't believe people like X Men First Class. Cap didn't have that WW2 feeling so it was ok. Thor was alright. Another movie that could've been better. I give it to Planet of the Apes.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 12/29/2011, 1:51 PM
Gambitfreak, you only care about CBMs sticking strictly to the source so the fact that First Class was actually a well made movie is irrelevant to you.

I agree with the best list.

as for the bad ones:

Green Lantern: it wasn't bad to me,was entertaining to say the least. but then again I'm not really a GL fan.

TF3: I have to say....I used to really like these movies, but now I can't watch them.

Cowboys and aliens: I liked it. badass Daniel Craig and over-the-top Harrison Ford saved the movie for me :P ,and the aliens were cool looking.
LucasMend
LucasMend - 12/29/2011, 2:02 PM
I've got to agree with everything you said about Cowboys & Aliens here. I thought Craig and Ford together would give really good momments on the movie, but in the end, well nothing! lol
nor Craig, Ford, Wilde or Rockwell with their good/great acting saved the movie.

I just don't get the love for X-Men FC. This movie was dreadful. I would rather chew on rusty tacks instead of watching this again. I'm thankful the general public is catching on or maybe even getting bored with these XM movies. FC only brought in $146 mil domesticly and I could only hope that Fox won't green light another one.

Sparrowsabre7 - 12/29/2011, 2:03 PM
I am sorry but I just cannot stand how much First Class is overrated. I like the film a great deal and it's my second favourite X-film after the original, but there is a lot of stuff wrong with it and I don't mean the continuity. Aside from Fassbender, none of the actors really stand out, though McAvoy is pretty good, despite his absolutely terrible chat-up lines which are not only out of character but are actively cringe-worthy. The rest of the supporting cast did little to stand out either, in fact the only one who really made an impression for me was Edi Gathegi's Darwin and look how that turned out...

I'm not trying to trash the film by any means, because it IS very good, but to call it one of the greatest movies ever is such ridiculous hyperbole I just can't bear it.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 12/29/2011, 2:11 PM
Pony, First Class, Captain America and Thor all sold roughly the same amount of tickets. CA and Thor had the 3D boost to prop up their number though.

Jolt17 - 12/29/2011, 2:12 PM
No Captain America: The First Avenger!? Ah, well...okay. That's my favorite movie of this year, could be all time but it could also be just my bias. Otherwise, nice stuff, Ror.

And I was not dissapointed by Transformers: Dark of the Moon, because I expected nothing from it! Instead, it kind of appeared better to me, since the action scenes were nearly spectacular, and the performances were a lot better compared to Revenge of the Fallen. Still, it's a disgraceful movie and disgraceful franchise in the end. The major disappointment is obviously Green Lantern, especially being a big fan of the character.

Sadly missed Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Cowboys & Aliens (or fortunately for this one?), but ah, that's it. 2011 was nearly great to me, at least I've seen 3 impressive CBMs, and 1 even has a chance to be my all-time favorite. There's that 1 major disappointment, but what has passed let pass, so bring on 2012! :)

Okay well, I gotta say I liked Conan, was it a gorefest? HELL YEAH!! Did he have a fair bit of dialogue? Yep prefer that to Arnie's not so talkative because my austrian is strong and i don't know much english Conan (although they were still great movies.) Xmen First Class great movie, but if you're going to screw up the ACTUAL first class, then it's not worthy of honorable mention in my books, one day a good X-men movie will be made that makes sense with the actual characters in the correct time frame. Sebastian Shaw WAS great though. Rise of the Planet of the apes was good, not GREAT, good. Cap was fricken AWESOME!

I don't understand the part where people say Trasformers moves have no plot. If it didn't have a plot there would be no movie. There is actually a lot happening in the movies and a lot of activities the characters must do.

It's not as simple as bad guys attack, good guys fight. I"m not saying their perfect. I know their flaws, but a lot of people get to worked up and ruin it for themselves.

I can ruin X-men First Class in the same way. It was a good movie. But when I think about the extremely large list of continuity errors (few changes I actually enjoy) and the rushed ending then I can rightfully say First Class sucked. But I'm not a baby so I enjoy the movie for the good.

There are movies that have NO good or barely any to compare with and those are the ones that suck.

who cares if X:FC has almost no continuity with X3 and wolverine? if we're talking about continuity was marvel 616 that ship sailed a lifetime ago.
