Although the film has courted controversy with both the religious and non-religious, it has never the less proven popular with the audience, raking in $44m at the US Box Office since it's release and seeing off competition from
Divergent and
Muppets Most Wanted.
Whilst it's earnings were no doubt helped by the later release of
Captain America: The Winter Soldier in th US Paul Dagarabedian of Rentrak believes it may set a new trend for films;
"I think these biblical themed movies are like the new frontier for Hollywood" said the senior analyst for box office tracker
"Hollywood hadn't cracked the code on a biblical movie that would have mainstream appeal. Now I think they've figured it out" he told the BBC.
