Christopher Nolan Says He's Most Likely Done With Superhero Movies...But "Never Say Never"

Though it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that a director who prides himself on pushing forward with new ideas is hesitant to go back to a genre he's already transcended, it sounds as if we won't be getting any more superhero flicks from The Dark Knight's Christopher Nolan.

Whether you happen to like his movies or not, there's no denying that Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy paved the way for comic book based films to be taken that bit more seriously. Not that he was the first to take the realistic "dark and gritty" approach that so many fans are actually a bit tired of now, but the phenomenal critical and commercial success of Batman Begins, The Dark Knight (in particular) and The Dark Knight Rises really put the comic book/superhero genre on the map in a way it had never been before. Since he wrapped the last film in the trilogy, Nolan served as executive producer on Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel, but don't expect him to play any role in WB/DC's film slate moving forward..or indeed any other superhero-type movie. "I think I had a great experience with the superhero genre and got to explore a lot of things," Nolan tells Time Out. "But it was a good decade of my life and I find it hard to imagine returning to it. But never say never," Well, at least he's not ruling it out completely. Perhaps one day he'll like a script, or a character, or an idea enough to step back into that world he helped define. What do you guys think? Would you like to see more Christopher Nolan CBMs or do you think he's made his contribution and should move on? Sound off below.

I respect his decision but I do think a Nolan take on a Punisher or Daredevil movie would be cool to see.

Forget about superheroes. All I want is a Nolan Bond Film starring Tom Hardy or Michael Fassbender.

It's really unfortunate that they couldn't get Nolan to direct Man of Steel.

Yes! Nolan Bond would be awesome. Even though Sam Mendes recreated The Dark Knight with Skyfall. He could do kne of the Bond sequels after the next one.

I'm actually glad. His realistic approach will not work with all superheroes. There are only a couple if characters that would work in that fashion and still be believable.

I am happy that he opened the genre to a wider audience. I do believe comic book movies would not be as popular if it weren't for Nolan.

He would do them some good however hes more likely staying with DC bc hes interested in complex characters with interesing stories in their mythos.

Just bc he made Batman with a more realistic tone doesnt mean hes a one note. You stick with what youre going for and he did. If es dealing with a character with powers im sure he'd be willing to do that

He changed the game and the genre forever. He made his mark and I enjoyed his trilogy. He made me love superheroes again as well as being able to love the villains. He made me really intrigued with the joker. He also allowed CBMs to garner respect from te masses and be recognized as great films not only as superhero flicks. Mad respect for Nolan.

It seems to me that people don't understand that CBM's are evolving and have been evolving anyway. So to put TDK at a pedestal forever would be unwise.

With Nolan's style of storytelling the realistic approach works. A superhero with alien like powers doesn't seem to be his style. I personally do not think that's something he would do. I could very well be wrong.

I couldn't imagine Nolan wanting to adhere to universe continuity and fan service. Unless his next films bomb, in which case he will return to what made him a household name in a second...

Nolan really opened up the world of CBMs. He aided to their popularity. I can see him helming 007 James Bond film one day

@comicsbornandbred Yes I agree, he's always been quoted as saying Bond films were a great source of inspiration growing up, and given that hes a Brit, I do see him helming a bond film in the near future

He should do a CBM that's not a superhero movie.

believe it or not I think a Nolan take on Aquaman would be a great fit because he would create an entire make believe world and make that shit real or maybe even the flash

Gotta respect his talent. He was prob the first real auteur type director to helm a CBM. Now we're getting some talented directors like the Russos doig CBMs and CBMs are allowing them to display thier talent. Cap 2 Howe how diverse the Russo bros are and they're not just comedic directors. I feel like he oponed the gates for all types of directors to make CBM films. And the Russo bros helped as well.
