Comic Book Movie Winners and Losers of 2009

Comic Book Movie Winners and Losers of 2009

So, how did this year's movies stack up? We take a look back at 2009, identifying the winners and losers.

I would say that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a loser also since the movie sucked the big one

Wolverine financially was a winner. but, the film in a whole was... a loser.

I agree with Ryden and IFC.

MarkCassidy - 11/25/2009, 9:24 AM
Nope, Wolverine was flawed, and not a very good adaptation, but the movie itself was ok..certainly not bad.

Great stuff, agree wholeheartedly except for ROTF, for the sheer idiocy of it Id have to lean towards loser..but then, i guess it did have cool giant robots hitting stuff too...

You should post the article here in its entirety I reckon.

if the deadpool movie is based on the deadpool character in the wolverine movie - its gonna blow.
although some flowers do grow from poop so i may be wrong.

They all sucked exept watchmen which was so good that it was worth a year of bad movies, and even though g.I. Joe was a loser I kinda liked it.

i jsut saw the trailer for the expendables. Looks like the greatest 80s action movie ever but it was made 20yrs too late. Still gonna see it.

Unfortunately I have to agree with Ryden, Infamously, and MsKyle.

I love Hugh. I love Wolverine, but that movie was definitely not a WIN.

But also I don't really even agree with Transformers as a winner. It had some amazing special effects, and supercool CGI, but other than that I did not enjoy it.

But look at this... Im all stating opinions without reading the RC article so I am off to do just that

I also liked GI joe. Everybody keeps pi$$ing and moaning that it sucked but, c'mon, it's a movie about action figures. What did you expect, Shakespeare? It looked cool, there were cool fight scenes, there were hot chicks. Mission accomplished.

And here's what gets me, GI joe is a loser even though it made boat loads of money and a lot of people dug it. Meanwhile, Astro Boy has earned less than a third of its production budget so far and is receiving lackluster reviews. That's a winner?

Those Reelzchannel dopes have got to define their criteria more clearly. It seems to me that this list was made by some dweeby fanboy who's just spouting off about the movies he did or didn't like.

a winner because of a "video game, toys, and spin off".. that's an interesting way of seeing it. i don't play with toys or video games so idk about that.. but YAY for deadpool. i pray it's nothing like Wolverine, cause then it'll be a loser as well.

They should change the title to "financial winners and losers of 2009".

How can W*NKERINES BORIGINS be classed as a winner???

It got voted WORST cbm of the year here at CBM's????

Lmao!

; D

WATCHMEN BEST cbm and movie of the YEAR easy!!
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 11/25/2009, 10:03 AM
ok so I read it.

@ CBM: It's not just so called "purists" that didn't like Wolverine, and bad interpretations of characters were NOT the only flaw.

Annnnd Tformers 2 made all that bank on the strength and reputation of the first one, not becuase it was any good. I really only saw it because I saw the first one, and I bet millions of people worldwide did exactly the same.

This is a very biased article, and if money made is your only compass for success well then good for you. But "film" as an art form is much bigger than how much the movie costs or how much it earns.

I dunno about Watchmen being a 'winner'. The director did a hatchet job on it and it was just awkward. It was not as bad a GI Joe. BORIGINS was BAWFUL. TF2 could have been alot better. Did'nt see astroboy. Can't wait til this dissapointing year comes to an end, worst year ever. Happy Holidays.

People are way too jaded, cynical, and uptight when it comes to movies these days. Now that comic book movies are all the rage, suddenly everybody's a fanboy??? I hear jocks and preppy types whining about the accuracy and faithfulness of CBMs all the time and I know that these jerk holes have never set foot in a comic shop. But suddenly it's in vogue to go see the latest CBM and complain about it.
Then you got your 16 year old crumb-snatchers who've never watched a single episode of GI joe or Transformers, and wouldn't know from the likes of Alan Moore or Frank Miller. But, there they are, analyzing the mise en scene and better narrative points of every X-man and Ninja Turtle that graces the silver screen!?

Worse than that are the fanboys themselves. Since when is a fanboy's geek cred measured in how viciously he pans a CBM?? The damn fanboys are always the first in line for these flicks, not so that they can say they were the first to see it, but so they can be the first to trash it! Nobody hates a comic book movie more than a comic book fan. You name the CBM, doesn't matter how good. It could be Dark Knight, the original Superman, Iron Man, Spider Man, ANYTHING; I've heard fanboys ripping all of these movies APART!

Maybe we should go back to the bad ol' days when I grew up where there were almost NO CBMs and we would've KILLED to see a movie like Transformers or Wolverine. And we would love that stuff because it validated our interests and it entertained us. Batman (1989) wasn't the most accurate CBM, and it wasn't groundbreaking cinema, but it was a movie about a funny book that we liked that was made for US to see. And we LOVED it back then!

But, I digress. All I'm sayin' is that comics and cartoons are NOT the gospel. Sometimes it's better to stick to the source BUT sometimes the source is campy and hokey and artistic license is okay. It's time for us fanboys to ADMIT it, some CBMs are BETTER than the source material.

THERE, I said it.

X men Origins wolvrine: With its box office, decidedly bright future, and the awesome Hugh Jackman, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is definitely a winner.

ROTF: So, even though Transformers got critically panned for good reason, we're declared in a winner because it made money and has the legs for more sequels — not to mention Megan Fox's legs, which are reason enough, themselves.

How does that define a winner?
GUNSMITH
GUNSMITH - 11/25/2009, 10:40 AM
I SAY IF YOU WANNA SAY SOMETHINGS A WINNER, YOU LOOK AT HOW MUCH THEY MADE..ALL THE WINNERS HAD THEIR THINGS TO CRITIC ABOUT BUT IN THE END IT WAS THE MONEY THEY GENERATED THAT SAYS THEY WON BIG TIME
jazzman
jazzman - 11/25/2009, 10:46 AM
yeah i agree this is only about how much money these movies make. if we based these movies if its good or not well X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen would not be consider as winners.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was not great but it was kind of good. Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow kicked ass.

Street Fighter: The legend of Chun-Li is total rubbish but its funny seeing how Chris Klein trying to act and saying his lines "NASH OUT" LMAO.
Shaman
Shaman - 11/25/2009, 10:55 AM
We're all entitled to our opinions and shouldn't just take it and like it like lap dogs. If a movie's good, then it's good, if it's bad then it warrants a thrashing. It has nothing to do with being an accurate adaptation or not. JUST BECAUSE they decided to make a film about our childhood passions doesn't mean that we should automatically like it. If they make sense, they can take all the liberties in the world, if they don't then i paid for the damn film so i'm entitled to say how shitty it was. "Accurateness to the source material" is only one criteria. There are plenty more to judge from.

@ gibbly

if you think any of us go see CBM's hoping they're going to suck then you're off your rocker. as for the "non-comic fanse acting like they know what's wrong". i personally think its THOSE people that keep these terrible CBM's pumping. wolverine origins is a perfect example. anyone thats read even a FEW wolverine comics can tell you how terrible an adaptation it was, and how far off it was to the comics. its the people that don't know any better that thought it was awesome.

CorndogBurglar - 11/25/2009, 11:08 AM
i don't get how everyone says the snake-eyes/stormshadow fights were anything special. they were short, and broken up into 2-3 hit combos, then scenes change to someone else that no one cares about. ray park and byung hung lee's talent were wasted in this movie, neither of them did ANYTHING spectacular. gi joe was easily the worst movie this year.
