EDITORIAL: Why The Studios Need To Work Together

In a world where character rights are divied up between different studios, I'm here to make the argument that the best course of action for fans and investors, is for the studios to work together! Read on for more.

Let's start off this editorial by admitting one thing, on top of The Avengers being the biggest movie of the summer; it also showed movie studios that both fans and casual audiences were looking for something astounding, something beyond just a few cheap character cash-in's and cameos. People want to see massive team-ups and the box office showed that.

So now with The Avengers success, we have movie studios scrambling to make their team-up films. Fox is hard at work on Days of Future Past, Sony is rumored to be building their universe with Spider-Man, and even on a non-Marvel front, you have DC finally bringing Batman and Superman together onscreen beyond animation.

Sticking with Marvel though, it's beginning to become increasingly clear that like their characters, the Studios themselves are going to require partnership and cooperation to truly kick ass.

<>SOME STORIES NEED TO BE TOLD

The simplest argument as to why these studios need to work together is because the stories they are adapting require it. How long can studios avoid stories where ___________ is a major player.

Take for instance Fox, who are forever milking Wolverine and Hugh Jackman. Eventually they will have to do Old Man Logan, considering that they've adapted almost all of Wolverine's best stories already, with many of them being utterly wasted on Origins: Wolverine. With the Japanese story done with, either they expand on the Japan stuff, or they move on to another story. If Fox was to ever do Old Man Logan, they'd need Hawkeye and Hulk definitely.

At the same time, Marvel is clearly working towards The Infinity Gauntlet, a story that in the comics brought together pretty much the entire Marvel universe. You'd need characters from Fox and Sony to give the sense of weight to the situation.

If these studios worked together, we could see Hawkeye and Hulk appearing in a Fox owned Old Man Logan adaption, and perhaps also see Wolverine fighting alongside Cap and Iron Man during the Infinity Gauntlet story.

I could be completely wrong, but something tells me that these studios would benefit from having to constantly avoid stories just because it has another studio's characters.

<>SYNERGY

Beyond just being a dumb marketing term, it can seem confusing to casual movie audiences when you see a character played by two different actors. We're getting two different actors playing Quicksilver; with Aaron Johnson and Evan Peters both portraying the speedster it's as clear as day that these two studios are not budging with the character.

While I don't expect this realistically; I think it would benefit these studios to use the same actor/actress. If they both have rights to the characters, couldn't they both use the same actor or actress? It simply just doesn't make any sense.

<>$$$

It just makes sense financially to work together, if The avengers did as well as it did putting Cap and Iron Man in the same frame; you can only imagine how well Avengers 3 would do if Spider-Man swung in to kick Thanos, or if Hulk threw Wolverine. Even if these companies were to take a small percent of the profits in return for lending their characters, it would be gangbusters.

<>CONCLUSION

When it comes down to it, I think that both the studios and their fans will benefit from seeing these studios work together. We'd get great shots, great stories, and other fruits of an otherwise great partnership.

Considering most of the people I talk to (non comic fans) dislike Fox's films and love Marvel Studios films, I'd say it would be bad for the general audience.

Sadly Spider-man and Wolverine have taken the backseat to characters like Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Captain America.

I like the fact that the Avengers characters are getting attention but it's sad that the other characters are getting less popular.

I think that seeing Fox's Wolverine onscreen with Iron Man etc. would just make the audience ultimately dissatisfied.

They may see it but Fox would want control over it so they would probably mess it up. So yeah. Good wishing but doubt it's going to happen.

Best thing to hope for is all the rights revert to Marvel in a few years and we can continue stories with rebooted new characters set in the MCU.

If they want mega-cash, Spidey, Iron Man, Wolverine...

I wouldn't want Fox's versions of the characters to be in the MCU.

I wouldn't want an X-Men team without Cyclops for example. I hate what they've done with the X-Men. Pretty much everything after X2 has been garbage. That isn't the X-Men I would want sharing a world with the MCU.

The most probable to work with Marvel is Sony.

Potential money lost out weighs the potential money gain.Simply put when all is said and done when the money's divide up it probably wont match what they put into to production.Especially if they have to divide it three ways.

I could see Marvel Studios and Sony working together. As for FOX they are holding onto the rights of X-men and F4. However the F4 belongs at Marvel Studios, i could see it working with in the MCU.

If studios work together they spend all their time on the one movie, while if they don't we get more movies.

@OldGreg
Yeah it's too bad that Marvel was nearly bankrupt and if they didn't sell off the rights to certain characters, then we probably wouldn't even have Marvel Studios making movies.

@Oldgreg. You have to understand, that Marvel is going to do what makes the most sense. What does make the most sense? Whatever makes the most money, that's what. The GA is eating this stuff up. This format that you speak of. Its working. You call them crappy, but your outnumbered apparently. You want to call it greed go ahead, but its more like......smart business. They NEED to make as much money as possible to keep making movies. Thats the way it works. They are giving people what they think they want. Cause when they look at the numbers, they think this formula works, so why would they change it? THAT would be risky. In my opinion, there isn't a single crappy Marvel movie. Their not perfect, but I love every single one of them. Some day, Fox and Sony may want to make a deal. Cause they know Marvels doing it right. So does the majority of people. Except for the smaller minority of haters. Everyone's entitled to their opinion.

@Thelegendlives. Exactly. They had to sell the rights back then. We definitely wouldn't have Marvel Studios if it wasn't for that. WB owned DC. And they were only making Superman and Batman films for the most part a couple decades ago. It was easier for them. I'm just glad that both studios are really taking off now. Hopefully the genre doesn't get stale for at least 15 more years.

theyre never going to work out a deal. Not that I would necessarily want them to anyway. The only rights I want back at Marvel is FF so we can have Galactus and Surfer and all that good stuff. Nice write up tho Hulksta

If say they DID work out a deal, big IF, they would most likely rent the character from the other studios. So then they could cast whoever they wanted into the role. If they introduce Wolverine, it doesn't have to be the same Wolverine from Foxs films. All they would have to do is reference the X men. It wouldn't have to be the same versions. Its not like just because Wolverine is in New Avengers that Marvel would HAVE to go and make their own X men films. Just throw in a reference. Same with Spiderman. Its a possibility in the future. Its happened before (Kingpin), and it could happen again. To say its not possible your just in denial for whatever reason.

I like to picture later on, when contracts start to run out, and there have been several sequels to Avengers, a soft reboot for the Avengers. I just mean the actors all at once with a new character lineup. Still in continuity with what we have, but I want to see Spiderman, Wolverine and Luke Cage join the Avengers. I loved the New Avengers books. Their what got me back into comics. Spiderman, Wolverine, Ironman and Hulk are my favorites so to get to see three on the same team was awesome for me. If I got to see that in a movie, I can't even imagine how excited I would be.
