Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog hit the web in 2008. Yes I know, 2 years late to the party, but I finally sat down and watched it and let me just say I absolutley love it! It's a splendid musical tragicomedy starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day that was written by Joss Whedon and his brother Zack Whedon.
The story revolves around an aspiring super villian named Billy AKA Dr. Horrible who really wants to join the Evil League of Evil, but most of all to be with the girl he loves named Penny.
Things go some-what bad for Dr. Horrible when after his arch-nemesis Captain Hammer saves Penny's life a romance blossoms between the super hero and damsel in distress. As some time passes, Penny and Billy end up becoming very close but eventually Dr. Horrible's jealousy gets the better of him and when instructed to kill someone by E.L.E. Leader, Bad Horse, he sets his eyes, of course, on Captain Hammer. Sadly, things go tragic for Dr. Horrible when his death beam get damaged in a fight with Captain Hammer and the malfunction results in the death of Penny...
I love everybody they casted in this movie and, to me, the showed tremendous talent whether it was delivering lines or singing a song. I especially loved Nathan Fillion as the superficial, douche of a hero, Captain Hammer. I would be lying if I said I wasn't surprised by Fillion's singing. I'm not saying he should put out an album or go into the music business but still I was impressed.
Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion seem to never fail in delivering in anything I watch them in and it was just awesome to watch them in their scenes together especially the first encounter they have during the song, "A Man's Gotta Do." Or the scene where they encounter each other in the laundromat, in which Captain Hammer explains his reasoning for dating Penny is because he knows that Dr. Horrible loves her and now he couldn't have her. This movie really gets you cheering for the villian and wishing for the end of the hero. Which, as funny as it sounds, is another reason I love this film.
The music in this film was well delivered. There isn't a song in it I disapprove of. In fact after watching I went and bought the album on iTunes, my favorite song/scene being "A Man's Gotta Do."
As for what bothered me... To be perfectly honest I actually can't think of anything that really bothered me about this film. I have watched it repeatedly looking for something but there's nothing for me to rant about. ☺
If you're not a fan of musicals than you probably won't dig it like I did, but I think it's definately enjoyable and worth the watch. So let me end in saying I hope they actually do a sequel and I hope some of you will give this 45 min. flick a chance.
