INTERVIEW: Christopher Daniels Talks Comics, CBM's & Which Character He Would Like To Play In A Movie

EXCLUSIVE: Pro-Wrestler Christopher Daniels is a huge comic book fan. Here he talks about how Wrestling and comic culture meet in the middle, as well as revealing his desire to play a certain mouthy mercenary on the big screen..

Christopher Daniels (formerly known as the "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels) is considered by many (me included) to be one of the best all round pro-wrestlers in the business. He has wrestled for numerous promotions both big and small, earning the mantle "The King Of The Indies" for his work with and championing of various independent promotions the world over. He also happens to be a big comic book fan and took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions about appearing at this year's SDCC, his favorite CBM's, whether he has any intentions to pursue an acting career and more.

MC: I believe that you are a big comic book fan(X-Men in particular:). You along with some pals from TNA appeared at this year's SDCC. How was that experience?

CD: I had a blast, and I know my friends that wrestled that day did too. I have friends that work at Marvel Comics, so it's always fun to see them and the work that they are doing. I had some personalized sketches done by artists like Todd Nauck and Mark Brooks, and I got to speak in depth with Peter David, one of the best writers out there. In addition, Eric Young, Frankie Kazarian, and I all had comic character-themed wrestling gear for our three-way match at the TNA event, so it was cool for me to come to the ring dressed as Magneto.

There seems to be quite a few comic book fans among pro wrestlers. Some even incorporate this into their gimmicks etc. Do you think this is due to being drawn into the sort of "geek culture" that is seen as being associated with both wrestling and comic books today?

Well, I know many of the guys in the locker room that have read since they were kids, the same way they've been wrestling fans since then. For me, I felt that the same sort of storytelling was present in both comics and wrestling, the entire "good vs. evil" paradigm, and that appealed to me as a young reader, and stayed with me as I grew up.

As far as the movie side of it goes, have you been keeping up with the recent batch of comic book movies? Any favorites?

I was very happy with the X-Men First Class movie, despite the fact that it differed so much from the comic of the same name. I was surprised by how much it tied into the Bryan Singer movies, and I really enjoyed Kevin Bacon's portrayal of Sebastain Shaw. I also enjoyed both Thor and Captain America, and I can't wait to see how The Avengers movie turns out.

We are seeing more and more wrestlers cross over into movies these days, is that something you might like to do some day?

I'd love an opportunity to act in the future, but I understand how difficult it is to break into that field, and as much as I'd like being a professional wrestler to open doors for me, I'm realistic enough to know that it'll take a bit more than that to get me onscreen. So for now I'm content with my wrestling career, but as for the future...

If you could play any comic book character on the big screen who would it be?

I think I'd play a pretty nifty Deadpool. I feel like I'm a bit of a wiseass, just like Wade Wilson, and I'm sure all my friends would concur.

Many thanks to Christopher for the interview. Be sure to visit his website: Fallenangelchristopherdaniels.com, follow him on Twitter: @facdaniels, and tune in to Impact Wrestling every Thursday to see him in action.

That's cool, it's nice to hear a wrestler who's actually quite down to Earth and sensible, you don't get that much these days (which is why I never really got into watching wrestling)
"as much as I'd like being a professional wrestler to open doors for me, I'm realistic enough to know that it'll take a bit more than that to get me onscreen" seems he understands that wrestlers turned actors dont seem to have a good track record, and that he knows if he were to make the jump from the ring to the big screen he'd need to put in a lot of hard work to learn real acting.

Rob Van Damm is also a big comic book guy. He owns (or at least used too) a couple of comic book shops.

Rey has done matches dressed as whatever comic-book themed movie is about to come out,nd is something he's done as long ago as his WCW days where he appeared dressed as the Phantom in one of his epic battles with Eddie Guerrerro[RIP]. Cm Punk is practically a hypeman for anything Ed Brubaker writes, and tells his followers so through Twitter. Raven wrote a Spider-Man one-shot,as`well. Whether or not all this is the reason Ben Grimm was a pro wrestler in the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation in issues of the Fantastic Four is,of couse,debatable...lol

Christopher Daniels and A.J. Styles have had some of the best matches in the history of wrestling. He is an awesome wrestler but his mike skills totally suck! I agree with maybe a voiceless character but no way could he play Deadpool.

Wow, awesome to see the Fallen Angel on CBM.

He just needs to do himself a favor and stay away from TNA forever.

Glad he's a comics fan.

@marvel72 you must have never seen Chris Hero. But Fallen Angel would be a great Daredevil as well as Deadpool.TNA/Impact fans already know EY is pretty mu8ch an on screen comic character himself.

Robert Downey Jr. may be a huge wrestling fan doesn't mean he should try it. Every movie I seen with a pro wrestler in it was terrible, even Hogan (The Rock is the exception.)

Daniels is an awesome guy and an awesome wrestler. I met him at an ROH show a few years back and he was super-cool. I haven't watched wrestling in years, is he still working in TNA?

@MaddMonkk The Rock is the definite exception. Although I thought Expendables was good fun and it had "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Another obvious exception (for me at least) would be The Wrestler.
