Johnny Depp to Reteam with Gore Verbinski on Lone Ranger?

Captain Jack Sparrow and director Gore Verbinski could be reuniting on the movie version of The Lone Ranger, according to Deadline.com

Offers the site, "Verbinski, whose last live action film was 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, is getting serious about making his next directing outing The Lone Ranger, the Disney pic that has Jerry Bruckheimer producing with Depp playing Tonto."

Apparently there isn't a timeline for Lone Ranger in place just yet. Supposedly Depp will next be reuniting with Tim Burton for the big screen version of the '60s soap opera Dark Shadows, although, admittedly, that project has been pushed back several times already.

Verbinski, who helmed all three Pirates of the Caribbean films, has most recently directed the Depp-starring CG film Rango.

Please GOD no. Depp is no Tonto, can't he just go back to France and leave America classics alone. The Lone Ranger is not for him.

I like Depp as an actor. He usually nails his roles. But I don't see him as an action star.I certainly don't see him as being particularly manly.Does anyone else agree? He's good as flamboyant Jack Sparrow, or a weird character like the Mad Hatter. But as a character like Tonto? No way.

I see Tonto as this silent, stoic character, who, when the time comes, turns into this cool ass kicking character.Sort of like the Marc Dacascos character in Brotherhood of the Wolf. That doesn't fit Depp.

Anyway, if he does get the part, I have a feeling it will be written for the actor.

tazmaniak@ I couldn't agree with you more. Depp is all wrong for Tonto as far as I am concerned. Hell, half the population is part Cherokee, including me. It doesn't make Depp right to play the role of Tonto. Tonto should be played by someone like Adam Beach.

If they cast Depp I am concerned they will make the role more of that of a straight man and not so serious of a character, which would really tick me off.

He's like Michael Knight but on a horse.

I think Depp has flooded the market with himself. Like Nicolas Cage.

@Betty To compare Depp with Nick Cage is horrible! Nick Cage is a horrible actor.

I think the idea of Depp as Tonto is genius. They shoould pick a nobody for the lead.

yeah.... Depp hmmm. usually I am the one who nitpicks these sorta things... but Disney isnt gonna hire a real native... Studios are kinda hesitant in hiring natives for certain types of roles now... there was a lot of commotion in the native entertainment world this last year over MTV and an elder native in a skit... most didn't hear about it but there were stupid protests and all kinds of drama So hiring a real native for this particular role probably aint gonna happen... Depp is about as close to a native as it gets

Just how familiar are you with Johnny Depp's filmography? I recall he played bank robber John Dillinger in "Public Enemies" just last year (which you did not mention) and he's not playing 'flamboyant' or 'weird' there. Depp has played all those things before. Have you seen Once Upon A Time In Mexico? Have you seen Donnie Brasco or Blow? You'd think Johnny Depp's career started with Pirates of the Caribbean the way some people talk about him now.

Johnny Depp is much closer to being Native American than many of the actors who claim they are from some obscure number of generations ago. Depp's grandparent(s) on both sides of the family are Cherokee. Not to mention its very apparent in his facial features. He's played Native before in a movie in 1997 that he directed called 'The Brave'.

I wondered when this movie would come? Depp is not bad choice, but i think Adam Beach would be a better choice as Tonto.

Im not sure who should play Lone Ranger, but George Clooney sounds cool.

AngelaB@ My lineage is very similar to Depp's as far as my Cherokee roots go and I don't think he looks any more "native" than I do. I am not against him playing a native part, but not one as iconic and needing a STRONG native look, like Tonto. I grew up watching the show, so I am going to be a little more picky than the rest. I don't want them screwing up a classic duo and I am a big Depp fan, but just not for this part.

Where are the new developments? This news was released almost two years ago. When Disney announced that they would be making 'Pirates 4' Depp was on the scene in a Tonto mask. Verbinski was already attached then. And, yes, no release date was set then either.
