Neil Gaiman Updates SANDMAN - Seems Optimistic About The "First Movie"

The writer hasn't sounded very excited at the prospect of his masterpiece being adapted for the screen (mainly because he's been involved with past failed incarnations) before, but now he discusses meeting with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and seems to confirm that more than one movie is planned.

There have been several attempts to adapt Neil Gaiman's incredible Sandman series into a live-action movie, but in the past the writer has told stories of the various reasons it never came to be -- and didn't sound very confident that it ever would. But recently we learned that Joseph-Gordon Levitt was on board as producer (with a possibility that he'll also star and direct) on Warner Bros.' latest attempt to bring Morpheus and the Endless to the big screen, with scriptwriter Jack Thorne on writing duties. This evidently sits well with Gaiman, as he brings those in attendance at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose an update on all he knows about the "first movie".

"Joseph Gordon-Levitt, of all people, is an enormous ‘Sandman’ fan. He and David Goyer talked about it, they’ve come up, I believe, with a treatment of what they want the story of the first movie to be. They are talking to an incredible writer [Jack Thorne], who I coincidentally already knew, because he did the movie script for ‘The Ocean at the End of the Lane,’ so I’ve met him and loved his treatment of my work. And Wednesday afternoon I will be spending with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and talking ‘Sandman!’ That’s pretty much everything I know. Now you know as much as I know."

Gaiman has never been one to mince his words, so if he's happy with how things are progressing Id say that's a very good sign. More at the link below.

Miley probably smells of assortments of musty ball sacks, because we all know that's what's on her face every night.

I find it odd that of all things WB seems interested in this DC property.

@JillyMcBeam

big difference between Pink and old chicken ass is that Pink actually has vocal talent and her music doesn't make me want to slit my wrists.

I so wish Sandman would get the Greenlight for HBO. DC's Vertigo imprint has so many great comics that would make for great tv shows. A Y: the Last Man and Fables are other comics that I wish would be on HBO.

Wtf? Where did all the dopey misogyny come from? I thought this was a site about movies…

Anyway, back on subject, those unable to understand why WB would be interested in this film must be totally ignorant of anything outside the superhero genre. Sandman is, I believe, DC/Vertigo's best selling series of all time. There's a reason for that: it's damn good. It may, in fact, be the best book of any format I've ever read.

@DaVinci31 , I manage a comic book store, and two years ago, dc/wb did a sort of stock take on what was their biggest selling property, turns out its Sandman, that's how we ended up getting the sandman prequel and why they started pushing out more merchandise, its also why they were actively pushing for a Movie franchise.

I think it's great that Gaiman is optimistic about it. I LOVE his Sandman, very anxious and excited to see it come to life!

There's a sandman up in the sky. He'd like to come and meet us, but he thinks he'd blow our minds.

Obviously it would bring in some type of revenue and profit in, given it is a masterpiece because I have read the series myself, but why clog up the schedule when you have a Superman and by extension - universe trying to get up and going?

We live in a world now where Marvel's THOR sequel made more of what a Superman origin film made, where a THOR origin story, made double of what WATCHMEN made, a movie that was supposed to be based on the "pinnacle" of all comics, and yet a b-list character easily out did that.

So why sit there and type that I am ignorant for not understanding the move of a studio, when it is just as easy to make something out of nothing (aka profitable) while at the same time expanding the DCCU.

Instead, WB is once again going to play it safe and go with a more known property. So STFU.

its gonna be a tough challenge getting this movie right,neil gaiman should be in control of writing it.

i also believe it would work better as a tv show.

Kind of interested to see how the film will turn out although the only downside about the film is that David S Goyer is behind it.

@MightyZeus - Goyer's there in a story capacity, though, which is where he's best. The actual writing of the screenplay will likely be handled by Jack Thorne.

I really want to see this become a series instead of a movie. Always made more sense to me. But a closely knit series of long movies like LotR or Harry Potter could work. I wonder how the general audience will react to the first installment.

@DaVinci:
WB is a big company, they can handle a couple more movies without having to put the 'cinametic johnny dc universe' on hold. It may take away some of Goyer's time, but moving him to a Feige like position, as a coordinator or a pre-production platform type, might be a good idea.
