TOP 10 FAVOURITE MOVIES OF 2014
--------------------------------

10. BIG EYES
This toned back little film from Tim Burton about the fascinatiing true story of marriage and art fraud may be one of his best in years. Though slow at times, strong performances by both Waltz and Adams pushed this film into my top 10 favourite movies of the year.

directed by: TIM BURTON
starring: Christoph Waltz, Amy Adams

9. THE TRIP TO ITALY
The sequel to The Trip is just as funny, and the food looks even more delicious. Impersonations of the likes of Batman, Bane, and yes, Michael Caine made this one of my favourites of the year.

directed by: MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM
starring: Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon

8. DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
While not as strong as its predecessor, Dawn is even more thrilling and action packed.

directed by: MATT REEVES
starring: Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke

7. THE IMITATION GAME
Another "true story" film to make it on my list is the deeply moving and fascinating story of Alan Turing (played incredibly by Benedict Cumberbatch) as a man attempting to crack the Nazi Enigma in WWII. Fun fact - I wrote an essay about the work of Turing in the field of espionage for a history class.

directed by: MORTEN TYLDUM
starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Kiera Knightly

6. BIRDMAN
This movie is weird, like really really weird. And once you can accept its weirdness you can enjoy this darkly comedic and satirical film. Likely one of the most refreshingly original films Ive ever seen both in direction and story.

directed by: ALEJANDRO INARRITU
starring: Michael Keaton, Edward Norton

5. EDGE OF TOMORROW
If you have yet to see this awesome sci-fi film, what are you waiting for? While the ending falls a little flat the action set-pieces, storyline, direction, and a bad-ass Emily Blunt make this a must see.

directed by: DOUG LIMAN
starring: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt

4. SNOWPIERCER
This dark look at humanity's future is ripe with social commentary and originality - but those who don't like cringeinducing violence (i.e. seeing a man's frozen arm being hammered off) should avoid.

directed by: JOON-HO BONG
starring: Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton

3. THE LEGO MOVIE
As someone who has gotten tired of the endless release of mediocre 3D animated movies from Pixar and Dreamworks, The Lego Movie was very refreshing. Not only genuinely hilarious but it packs an additional emotional punch, especially for those (like me) who grew up playing with Lego.

directed by: PHIL LORD & CHRIS MILLER
starring: Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks

2. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST
Everyone likes to gang up on Fox yet First Class and Days of Future Past are two of the best superhero/comicbook films in years. This is largely attributed to not only the thrilling action sequences but also the balanced tone and emotional complexity of the characters - rather than reliance on a cookie-cutter plot and misplaced "humour" that other superhero films rely on.

directed by: BRYAN SINGER
starring: Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence

1. INTERSTELLAR
What a beautiful film. Narratively immersive and cinematic in the purest sense. Its my favourite movie of the year and one of my favourite movies of all time.

directed by: CHRISTOPHER NOLAN
starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway

@cinnamon Hey I had fun with it haha, not a great movie I know, more of a guilty pleasure film - hence why it didn't make the top 10. Plus I love the Dracula character in general

Lego movie was good, but not a top 5 movie of the year... Dawn should be much higher, and Gone Girl should've made the list IMO. I didn't LOVE Guardians like most others on here, but I'd be crazy not to be it in the top 10. Captain should definitely be on there as well. Robocop is no where near a top 10. Actually, it'd be closer to a worst 10 movie of the he year

Just my 2¢

@anthonyEstark Cap, Guardians, and Godzilla all got honourable mentions - if they weren't my favourite movies of the year why would I put them in a list of my favourite movies of the year? I liked all three of those movies but liked these 10 more. Its my list and my opinion, im not going to throw in movies just because other people liked them more than I did.

@Yeet and thats your opinion and thats cool. Yeah was debating putting Gone Girl in place of Big Eyes but decided I liked Big Eyes slightly more. Liked, didn't love Guardians or Cap - both were good but could have been better imo. As for Robocop, yeah a lot of people hated it but as a robocop fan I found a lot to love - it was a new take on the story and I appreciated the satire involved, at the very least its the best thing to come from the robocop franchise since the original. thanks for sharing your thoughts and not just complaining!

@Nick56 I see that they're in the honorable mentions, but I can't see The Lego Movie as better than Cap 2 or Guardians. I realize that it's your list and you're not going to change it (rightly so) because of comments, but it just seems really strange to me.

@anthonyEstark Yeah its difficult to compare an animated movie to something like Cap or GOTG as they are very different. Im not necessarily saying one is better than the other - the lego movie is a very good animated movie just as Cap or guardians are very good superhero movies. What it comes down to on a list like this is what I found more enjoyment out of and what connected to me more as a viewer, and at the end of the day the movies I listed did a stronger job than others.

The LEGO Movie is so overrated. Can't believe it is really getting critical success.
