The World’s End
Poster Analysis

Introduction

My first request from Facebook is a little outside of my usual fare as lately I have been quite focused on comic book movies. Actually if I think about it the director of this time’s posters is actually going to soon film a new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Ant-Man. So, in a way I am leaving my comfort zone by still clinging to it in a strange way. My personal experience with Edgar Wright movies are a bit strange as I actually only watched bits and pieces of Shaun of the Dead. My actual first film from the director was Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which I absolutely love. Sadly, I haven’t gotten around to seeing this movie either so if I don’t know enough about the film, please feel free to fill me in on what exactly I ended up missing. Still, this does give me the possibility to take a look at a movie completely based on the posters.

Okay, I may have not seen the film but I did know what it is about and may I just say it is probably the funniest idea I have ever heard of. That entire concept is visualized within this poster as it lists down a bunch of quite bizarre names all leading up to The World’s End. What does it all mean? If I had no idea I would simply be a bit confused and guess there is a strong connection. Maybe it would be a roadtrip film where they need to get from one place to anotehr that share such names. Knowing the director and the way these names are it could indicate it is situated in England, but the names seem what one would use for a pub. Yes, it is the listing of each pub our protagonists plan to visit one after another, but from the poster alone it is difficult to say to what extend. The title does give us some ramifications that it may be a movie set during the apocalypse, but alongside these pub names it may simply be the last in the line for a pub crawl.

Seeing Simon Pegg and Nick Frost on top of the poster is quite interesting to see and further cements that this is the third part of the Cornetto trilogy. What is that? These are three films that have no true connection besides the fact that the main actors are always the same and each film will feature a specific taste of a Cornetto. It is a neat idea and it is great to see that the final film is coming out with a bang. It is great to further cement the concept of the last pub being not only named The World’s End, but also could involve an actual apokalypse. This is even more prominent through the background showing shooting stars hitting earth while also having the floor being covered in magma. It does gives us a feeling that their may be more to this with the shooting stars, especially considering it could mean that there will be an alien invasion that will lead to the end.

Alright, I am pretty sure something extrateresstial will happen when I consider that in the background we see people with glowing blue eyes. Also we get our first look our main protagonists which shows that not only will this be a rather strange film not only for the audience but also for the people involved. It is quite a comedic way to show that these two have no idea what exactly is going on and probably suddenly got involved in the whole chaos considering that all they were trying to go through a pub crawl. With the last pub being The World’s End there could be something much more mysterious with that place while showing that it hinges on them reaching that place before the world might be taken over by whatever aliens those are in the background.

This time around our cast is widened a little outside of our two main protagonissts. While it does show more from the other posters it does give us a little insight into what the story is about through the tagline. The entire film takes place on one night through which six friends find themselves on a pub craw what seems to be one city in England. That could say that they are old friends that found each other once again after many years passing trying to accomplish something they may have failed at a while ago. Simply from the way most people are dressed it seems that the one behind the entire would be the character played by Simon Pegg. He seems much more raggidy than the others that may indicate he is trying to go back to the older times while the others simply learned to move on, but that is all speculation on my part.

We get some nice character portraits from the actors which for some reason never gives us their names but use the pub names to describe their type of character. The first features Simon Pegg with the interesting title of „Famous Cock“ above his head. While at one point I could believe that this simply means he might be too drunk as soon as he gets to this pub, but it does state something about this character. It reflects the way he is standing with a beer in his hand while behind him the entire world seems to be burning to cinder. Even though the world is ending he doesn’t really seem to care as long as he has a good drink and can have a good time, which further cements what I stated before that he simply wants to have fun while avoiding any type of responsibility. On the other side we have Nick Frost’s character as he is actually quite dumbfounded about what exactly is happening. He stares off into space confused on how come the world is slowly burning down around them. The King’s Arms is a nice way of stating that no matter what happens he does stand and help the King, probably in this sense the man Simon Pegg is playing. So even if that man is completely crazy he would stand there to help him out or at least stand by his side. Yet I did look back at the first poster to see if their is an actual pub named that way but I can only find the King’s Head so I wonder if that was a mistake or it simply is a way to describe the character. While it would seem out of line with the one used for the character before it is difficult to say why exactly it is that way.

Conclusion

Overall these are some rather stylish posters that not only further cement the more comedic part of the story with the entire pub concept but also gives us a feeling that there is more going on than one would think. It seems to be quite a strange apocalyptic tale and honestly looking at these posters I would really like to get to see this film soon. I sadly missed it while it was in the cinema so I will hopefully get to see it some time soon. Actually it makes me want to watch the entire Cornetto trilogy as I really missed out with these films. A good friend of mine absolutely loves Shaun of the Dead and promised he would lend it to me the next time we meet so maybe I can make up for what I missed.
