Sony Pictures Confirm That THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Sequel Is Still Happening

Despite the soft opening for David Fincher's recently release film adaptation of the novel The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Sony is still wanting to adapt the next book in the series, The Girl Who Played With Fire.

Opening two weeks ago in the United States, David Fincher's Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - based on the first novel of the critically acclaimed series (DC Vertigo will adapt the novels into comic form this year) - has since grossed about $60 million domestically, which is somewhat below expectations (many are now saying that the film is underperforming). Many have also wondered if Sony Pictures will move ahead with a sequel, and now Entertainment Weekly has received confirmation that the adaptation of the next book, The Girl Who Played With Fire, is still into development, possibly targeted for a late 2013 release. David Fincher hasn't confirmed whether or not he'll return to direct the sequel, but stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara have both signed on for the adaptations of the next two books.

"[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book,”
a Sony rep tells EW. Dragon Tattoo, which has grossed $60 million in the U.S. since its release on Dec. 20, is being perceived as something of a box-office disappointment. Given the film’s merely decent performance, there’s been much speculation about whether Sony will now actually move forward with the sequel. But the Sony rep tells us that “development continues” on the sequel and Steven Zaillian is still working on the script as planned.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is in theaters now.

Word-of-mouth will keep the box-office pedal down on Fincher's masterpiece, putting to bed all the premature naysayers who came out of the woodwork based on only one weekend.

That said, I'd like to address the Sony rep: The rumor you're shooting down is a product of your own unwise move to release this film around Christmas. Maybe now it'll sink in that positioning your film for the sole purpose of winning an Oscar wasn't such a good idea.

I saw the first one yesterday...
It was fantastic!

The 'rape' scene scared me so much though...
I was happy she got her payback!
That fat douche deserved what he got!

I am happy it will get a sequel!

I am an enormous fan of the book series (one of my favorite trilogies in literature, right next to LOTR) and I just saw the film and I was completely blown away! Everything about the film screamed perfection to me, every little attention to detail. While not a word-for-word, block-by-block perfect adaptation of the novel, it was still a fantastic film. I am definitely looking forward to the sequel!

And I also think Rooney Mara should be considered for an Oscar for her performance!
