Stephen King's The Dark Tower To Get The Silver Screen Treatment!

Stephen King's The Dark Tower To Get The Silver Screen Treatment!

You'll never guess who they found to produce such an epic movie!!

It took Stephen King 22 years to finish his epic tale of The Gunslinger, Roland, and his companions as they are drawn towards the Dark Tower. Kinda like Lord Of The Rings, The Dark Tower is a story where all the excitement and adventure happens during the journey.

This from Cinematical.com:
"J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof (co-creator of Lost) have reportedly purchased the rights to the entire "Dark Tower" series from King himself for $19.00 -- unique because the number 19 recurs throughout the novels. King must be an enormous Abrams fan, because he already turned down Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption," "The Green Mile," "The Mist"), who was interested in adapting the series himself."

Damon Lindelof states:
"We're just so focused on finishing Lost that it's really hard to think about anything else. The last thing we want to think about is how to adapt a seven book series of, you know, basically the writer who we admire the most and look up to most and has inspired our work the most, and do anything with that."

Fortunate for Abrams and Lindelof Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series is already laid out in a seven book spread. Who knows how many films will be made? But if your any fan of King and or Abrams this is great news.

Are you kidding me? I loved Abrams take on "Star Trek," I can't wait to see what he can do in the realm of fantasy. Stay tuned as further news develops.

"The Dark Tower" had a Marvel comics run back in 2007.

I think the news was about it becoming movies...but the fact that Abrams is involved DOES excite me. I've liked everything I've seen of his, with the exception of Cloverfield.

The last time I heard, someone said they were gonna try to make it into 3 movies...which would be awful. There's too much good stuff in all the books. So yeah...this is good news today!

The Dark Tower series would be much better handles by Genndy Tartakovsky who did Samurai Jack. 7 books is too long because stuff will ultimately have to be cut. If you do a mini series you can incorporate everything. Make it an animation and put on HBO please. Now that would be something awesome.

This is far from being a reality. King's deal with Abrams is one step abstracted from an option. The "$19 deal" happened a long time ago--I'm not sure why it's reappearing all over the place as if it were current news.

Last I heard, King hasn't yet sold the film rights to anyone and I suspect that Abrams is going to be tied with a number of other projects in the near future that keep him from investing any serious time in this project. Little things like a Star Trek sequel, for example.

Dark tower is just fantastic. But i agree with Primera about it being a tv series. That would work much better.

I'm sure they'll do as good a job as possible for a movie series, but I think those books are better suited as tv series.

@ Gunsmith, I think Viggo Mortenson would be good.
According to Wikipedia, They are looking at *cough* Christian Bale to play Roland. Horrible thought. Maybe Russell Crowe?

All I know is he needs to be like late 30's early 40's. Roland is an older man. Remeber he is really like 300 years old or so.

@ Thecritic, they are amazing pieces of story telling.

I saw a comment last month saying Sam rockwell for Eddie, I like that casting call. Thanks MrJojo.

And Dcagedeagle, said Bruce Campbell for Roland. That could be cool, he would just have to be not at all funny. Don't know if he could do it.

In a nutshell, what is Dark Tower about?
ThoroughbredSteele0
ThoroughbredSteele0 - 8/12/2009, 11:57 AM
I say Viggo for Roland,he plays a good cowboy type, like in Hidalgo. no bruce campbell though, have you seen him lately on burn notice? he's gotten pretty plump over the years. now if he could get back down to his Briscoe County size then maybe, but like wulf said, he'ld have to take it serious and not be funny.

glad he turned down Darabont. I really didn't like the Mist. the "twist" ending was anything but.*SPOILER* if you sat through that whole movie and didn't realize that as soon as Janes character shot the other survivors that the mist would part, just go ahead and put yourself out of your misery. cause your retarded

@ jman: oh dear god no, what did we do to deserve that?

WannaBeGeek
WannaBeGeek - 8/12/2009, 12:04 PM
I see a lack of research here. There's been multiple Dark Tower stories done by Marvel. The fourth is still in the midst of new issues. It's totally inaccurate to say "The Dark Tower had a Marvel comics run back in 2007."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Tower_(comics)

Can we just stop with the user news? Not up to par.

CorndogBurglar - 8/12/2009, 12:04 PM
viggo mortensen for roland!!!!!!!!!!! he's as close to a cowboy in real life as any other actor in hollywood considering he owns and lives on a ranch.

also, did anyone know that its rumored that stephen king is actually one of the writers on Lost?? Nozz-a-la cola has been showing up in Lost, which obviously is something that is in some of King's books. also a lot of the characters on lost mirror king's characters in the dark tower series. there's also a companion novel to Lost called "Bad Twin" that is rumored to be written by stephen king under a surname. twins are a very prevalent and recurring theme in the dark tower mythos. in fact, it's also rumored that the island they're all stuck on in lost is actually in a different reality. i just thought it was interesting

CorndogBurglar - 8/12/2009, 12:06 PM
@ wannabegeek

how is it "totally inaccurate"??? it DID have a run in 2007. each miniseries can be considered a different "run".

Either viggo or Guy pierce.

Wuffcomic@ I knew someone posted this exact story. Good job
WulfComicFan
WulfComicFan - 8/12/2009, 12:23 PM
@ Superdog, Guy Pierce woulda been good around the time he did Ravenous I think. But not sure about now.

@ Newavenger, It's about a cowboy type,(although not really), who is trying to save the worlds from total oblivion, By an entity called the Crimson King. It spans 7 books. It's damn sure a wild ride. Quite unlike anything else I have read, and I have read alot of books.

ThePrimera has it half right.

This screams HBO series (Carnivale anyone?) but not animated. I think Pierce could work, Viggo a bit better maybe.

Check out The Proposition (2005) for a better understanding of what Pierce could bring to the table nowadays.

Hey valsghost

Haven't seen any CBA recently. You still workin on that?

@ valeriesghost

the thing about the dark tower series is that it connects all his other books. (well the majority of them anyway) everything that happens in his other books are basically happening on a different level of the dark tower. the dark tower is the "holder" or nexus of all realities. there are things that happen in his other books, sometimes miniscule details, sometimes huge events (like in insomnia, the crimson king, who is the big bad in the dark tower series, actually makes an appearance) that people don't even realizer the importance of unless they've read the Tower series. this is what makes king the best novelist of our time, imo. he's created a universe that could rival tolkien's in size and richness. good stuff man!
