THE BOOK OF CLARENCE Trailer Finds LaKeith Stanfield Trying His Hand At Being The Messiah

Jeymes Samuel's highly underrated debut, Netflix western The Harder They Fall, caused a lot of people to sit up and take notice, and his next project is sure to bring him even more attention.

In The Book of Clarence, a down-on-his luck street hustler (Atlanta's LaKeith Stanfield) encounters Jesus Christ and is immediately intrigued by how much power and adoration the self-proclaimed Son of God and his apostles command.

Clarence decides to try his hand at being the Messiah himself, but his preaching and "miracles" don't go unnoticed by the Romans.

The movie is described as a Biblical epic, but we're definitely getting some comedic vibes from this first trailer (Monty Python's The Life of Brian might be a better comparison than The Ten Commandments), and one moment right at the end seems to suggest that Clarence may actually have some God-given abilities after all.

“Clarence is a person that doesn’t believe in anything outside of what’s in front of him, what he can see and hear,” Samuel told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. “Clarence has a lot of inside belief — he has a lot of inside confidence. This man is sure he could fly. He reminds me of me growing up, but unlike me, he has no outside faith. I think it’s just a really interesting vantage point to explore living in that particular time and place, where most everyone around him is speaking about the Messiah.”

Check out the teaser below, and let us know what you think.

"From visionary filmmaker Jeymes Samuel, The Book of Clarence is a bold new take on the timeless Biblical-era epic. Streetwise but down-on-his-luck, Clarence (LaKeith Stanfield) is struggling to find a better life for his family, while fighting to free himself of debt. Captivated by the power and glory of the rising Messiah and His apostles, he risks everything to carve his own path to a divine life, and ultimately discovers that the redemptive power of belief may be his only way out. The film features new music by Jeymes Samuel, JAY-Z, and more."

Joining Stanfeild in The Book of Clarence is RJ Cyler, Omar Sy, Anna Diop, David Oyelowo, Micheal Ward, Alfre Woodard, Teyana Taylor, Caleb McLaughlin, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, James McAvoy, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The movie features new music from Samuel and Jay-Z, and will release in theaters on Jan. 12, 2024.

LaKeith in Atlanta is one of my favorite characters in anything anywhere. I'd love to see his take in any comic book property.

@WhatIfRickJames - same. For me he was the one consistent thing about the whole show. Really liked the last episode and what they implied through that ending with him.

This looks (somewhat) self aware, but it also seems like something Python or Mel Brooks would've done...50 years ago. 🤣

As a non believer, I'm fine with superstitious belief systems and fairy tales being subverted parodied, and mocked.
I just wonder when brave Hollywood will do the same regarding Islam or the prophet Muhammad?

*runs out of thread*

@Feralwookiee - oh we know that will never happen in Hollywood. Too much fear in that one.

bkmeijer1 - 8/30/2023, 8:25 AM
@Feralwookiee - they should just make a movie about Abraham and parody/mock Christians, Jews and Muslims all at the same time.

Now leave the door open, because *runs out of thread as well*

@bkmeijer1 - Don't forgot Hinduism and Buddism.

Hollywood is all about REPRESENTATION these days and we don't want to let anyone feel left out!

*runs back out of thread with a fatwa on his ass*

@Feralwookiee - I remember prompting ChatGPT to make a joke about Jesus. Within seconds you would get jokes. The second you mention Muhammad... It gives you a lesson on respecting others religions. I think that has since been fixed due to an outcry because of the blatant hypocrisy. But it's weird it happened in the first place. Either it's all ok or none of it.

@DarthOmega -
All belief systems are equal.
Some more than others. 🤣

@Feralwookiee - guess it becomes more difficult to mock both monotheistic and polytheistic religions/belief systems at the same time. I ain't doing it, but I'm leaving the door open for anyone who dares

@Feralwookiee - So you're good with LGBTQ people being subverted, parodied, and mocked also? Because that's all based on belief and feelings.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 8/30/2023, 10:04 AM
@BringFFtoMCU - Sure. Why not?
I'm fine with EVERYONE being, subverted; parodied, and mocked. Self included.

NO ONE is above being satirized.

@bkmeijer1 - I'm fine with throwing EVERYONE and every belief system under the bus. 🤣

It's when ONE GROUP becomes singled out where I'm like, it gets pretty annoying and old fast.
But, if you're gonna make fun of EVERYONE across the board and truly pull no punches...I'm there.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 8/30/2023, 10:28 AM
@Feralwookiee - you know, I'm there with you as long as it's still parody and not just insults disguised as jokes. Nobody is safe when it comes to parody
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 8/30/2023, 10:45 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Yes.
I grew up in the era long before "political correctness"/censorship.

I don't care what "race", skin color, culture, ethnicity, gender, sexuality etc you are...you're all gonna get made fun of and me too.

I'm ESPECIALLY ok with ripping politicians and religious "leaders" and other hypocrites.
I miss people like Mel Brooks, the Zuckers, etc who had the balls to make fun of EVERYONE, including themselves.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 8/30/2023, 4:26 PM
@Feralwookiee - same. Now I really want a movie that just mocks everyone. But it has to have a strong narrative. Mocking for the sake of mocking is just lame.
Blastaar
Blastaar - 8/30/2023, 6:19 PM
@bkmeijer1 - The closest we're gonna get is South Park & Family Guy, somewhat The Boondocks too, but live action...Uh, I don't know man.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 8/31/2023, 2:35 AM
@Blastaar - South Park was the first thing I thought of as well. Live-action? Yeah, I doubt it too. But could be fun

@Mugens - You know what I just rewatched the tiktok I saw his name is Pastor Ray Curry Jr. And the main complaint is that its a mockery. Its not really about the blacks, more so about the mockery of Christianity
