The Queen Of The Damned Gives Us Her Take On Iron Man: RDJ

The Queen Of The Damned Gives Us Her Take On Iron Man: RDJ

Anne Rice has written a slew of Vampire books. Anne did not approve of Tom Cruise for L'Estat but she sure has given Robert Downey Jr. her word of approval.

When asked how she felt about Robert Downey Jr. taking the role of L'Estat, Anne Rice had this to say:

"I’m delighted to comment. First off, I cannot confirm or deny the rumor. I have not received official word as to the truth of it yet. But I can say without hesitation that I love Robert Downey Jr. and I think he would make a fabulous Vampire Lestat. He is a major actor, a powerhouse of talent, and personality, and he evinces an irrepressible and seductive charm. He would bring great energy and skill to the role. I would love to see this happen. I’ve loved Robert Downey Jr. ever since I saw him in "Restoration" years ago, and I thought he was magical and powerful in Iron Man. —- So I hope the rumors are true [...] I’m thrilled at the prospect that this rumor might be true."

This is big when you consider the fact that Anne Rice rarely says anything about her books being turned into films or who will play the key roles.

When asked why most of her books are not yet movies?

"The rights were controlled by one studio for a very long time; and though there was constant interest, that one studio controlled whether or not something got made. The rights are no longer with that studio. And my agents are working diligently on the new possibilities. —– I have often wondered why so few movies have been made from my work. I think the problem lies in the fact that I wrote rather long series of books. If a studio buys one of a series, that studio wants to tie up the whole series. It is a built in problem. — I can’t complain."

Oh come now Mrs. Rice that sounds like a complaint to me. I would have some negative things to say about a studio that rushed the last one ("The Queen of the Damned") into a movie just so they could still hold the rights. The old quality verses quantity effect. Still if Robert Downey Jr. lands this role it will put the Vampire Chronicles back on the map and in a big way.

I think if she gives her blessing for RDJ to play her character then I willing to be open to this. If he fits her vision the all for it!

I liked both movies and thought that Stuart Townsend and Tom Cruise both did a great job. It would be nice to see Pitt come back and I hope Downey does a good job cause he's a great actor but I just don't see him as Lestat.

@Gunsmith: She did like Cruise as Lestat she even said so right before the movie lol

@Gunsmith she hated the idea of Tom Cruise as Lestat originally, but once she saw the completed movie, she actually printed a public retraction of her statement against Tom as Lestat...

Everybody loves RDJ! He is the man! I dont really care if he is this vampire movie or not but as long as he is Iron Man for the Avengers trilogy and Iron Man 3, I will be very happy

Well i for one LOVE Vampires as most of you already know, and RDJ is one of my favorite actors. So IMO, this is a match made in heaven. As long as it doesn't affect his commitment to Ironman and the Avengers, WE SHOULD be happy that he isn't getting type cast. Cause he'd be losing opportunities and you can damn well bet he'd kick Ironman's franchise to the ditch if it meant him not doing ANYTHING else of the carreer he worked so hard to get running again.

More power to him!

She has said the same about Tom Cruise in an interview and frankly he didn't sell me on his portrayal of Lestat. Which tells me she's just being PC about it. If she said he's a shit choice and he ends up getting the part, she'll look like a right prat.

No denying that RDJ has talent, he's a great actor and I've mentioned before he can make period pieces entertaining, even using the same reference Rice does, but it's still an odd choice.

Luke Goss would make a good Lestat.

Whatever, I'd watch RDJ eat a deli tray. I guess I'd watch this.

@ fotc

you do realize that the original bram stoker's dracula is based on a vampire being a romantic, right?? dracula fell in love, and wanted to make her a vampire to spend eternity with him.

WeaponX- I'm gonna have to agree with your casting choice! Luke Goss is by far the very best actor for Lestat. I know RDJ would be decent but Goss would be STELLAR!

@Shaman - Thanks, you should listen to me more often when you do your major casting stints, I'm so damn right about these things people pop stitches in their jeans.

Why her books never got made?

They sucked. Poorly written and only appreciated by a small clique.

That and how terrible Interview and QOTD was.......

Interview had cool moments, but for the most part....*insert the sound of a toilet flushing here*

necrosage2005- Knew a lot of suicidal idiots that actually opted for setting themselves on fire after getting drenched in gasoline??? I'm betting it would hurt a tad... enough to not want to go through it. I will agree that the "emotionnal" aspect of the vampire has been done to undeath and needs to be left in the closet though. Kinda one of the reasons why Norrington's "Blade" is on my top 5 "Vampire" films of all time even though most people don't concider it a "Vampire film" per say. I didn't see a problem with taking the best of the lore and adding a dash of kung-fu to it. It made it more entertaining and comic book oriented.

Shaman- While I will agree that the emotional vampire has been done time and again so has the blood thirsty vampire. What I like about the Vampire Chronicles is that, at that point in time, the series took a slightly different approach with the vampire world. I am a huge Lestat fan and I think that he is one of the most unique vampires in fiction. Dont get me wrong I love see the blood thirsty vampire as much as the next guy and I love the Underworld movies as well as some of the Blade movies but there really is no vampire quite like Lestat.
ironknight27
ironknight27 - 8/18/2009, 10:03 AM
necrosage2005- Don't get me wrong I love Dracula as well but to me Lestat is more than just a brooding vampire. Louis was probably more of the brooding one but I digress. I am willing to say though that some people have taken the brooding a little too far and have probably been influenced by Rice whether they want to admit it or not. One vampire that I will say was brooding but kick ass was Angel from Buffy.

never read the books, but saw the interview movie. i thought cruise was actually perfect for it!! i think downey jr is a great actor, but his charm isnt really reflective with that of a vampire. eh...i guess well see how he pulls it off, itll probably be good.

just finished reading the 1954 book of i am legend, and it was great! a whole lot different from the movie. those things were vampire-zombies. the ending was good! real deep

JeremyBentham- I havent read I am Legend but I seen the new movie and I watched the Omega Man and even for its time I thought the Omega Man was pretty good. I heard it was pretty close to the book but I dont know if it really is.

Necrosage- I'm sure you've seen Blade dude LOL Wesley Snipes??? Directed by Stephen Norrington??? ;P If not, it would be a miracle, or rather a tragedy. Go rent it or better yet, buy it!!! Thanks for the suggestion too :)

ironknight27- Well i for one enjoyed both films based on Rice's books even though i'm not a fan of her concept. But Angel got on my last nerves every single time i saw him in Buffy. I even tried to watch a whole episode of his own show. It felt like being a vampire trying to enjoy a sunrise.
