UPDATE: Letter to the Editor about CBM Front Page Fairness - Answered by Galactus

A user editorial asking about CBM's "front page" policy--something that's been bothering me..

Editorial Opinion

UPDATE: Galactus answers Superzero below

I want to start this EDITORIAL off on a positive note; I LOVE THIS SITE! It's a community of like-minded, passionate people coming together over something we all have a great love for-- comics and comic based movies. What really sets this site apart from others is the fan based content. We are the ones who pluck the news from other sites and upload it on to this one to share with everybody else. When you think about it, it's a pretty cool little idea.

When you think about it even harder it can cause some problems as well. Friendly competition is a good thing, but have you really looked at the names of the authors on the main page? Not a lot of variety there. If this is a user based site and everyone gets a fair chance of being on the front page then why is it that we only see the same five names over and over? I've been on main before and this is not a crybaby rant about not getting there. I'm just trying to figure out where all of the NON editor stories are? I understand editing and it's finer points quite well. It's a time consuming and tedious process, sometimes it's a huge pain in the ass as well. A true editor needs to be OBJECTIVE and non-biased, which is something I'm not seeing a lot of. I don't expect this to make it to the main page and I'm fine with that. It's an EDITORIAL piece, something that should NEVER go on the front page of ANYTHING, unless we're talking about "The Daily Bugle" I guess. I know that quite a few people work very hard on their stories and deserve as much time and consideration as those who are the editors. I'm not bashing anyone either. RorMachine has a great grasp on what he's doing and I really enjoy his articles, same thing goes for EdGross and Hawksblueeyes too. I just question the fairness of some of the editing process is all. I know the rules of the site and stick to them at all times. I love being able to "help out" on this site. I love posting my articles and the articles of others to my Facebook page to share with those who have no idea what this site is about. Like we learned in Kindergarten: "Sharing is good." We also learned to be fair. Let this be a plea to those who are in the power to do something about it. Try a little harder to include the varied and creative voices that come to this site. It's the thing that brought me here in the first place. If you decide to only use the same writers/editors over and over again then the only logical thing to do would be just removing the "user based content" portion of the site. Fair is fair.

Thanks for your honest criticism Superzero, and allow me start off by being nice too. Thanks for your readership and proclaiming love for our little site. I say "ours" because I really do believe this site is a communal project, and we do rely on user contributions more than any other fan run site that I know of. Every article contributed to CBM goes straight to its proper article type section (see tabs in news section) without any editing first. When the editors see what has been submitted, they front the best stuff to the main page "what's new" tab that displays on top. They also do their best to "fix" stuff that may not be up to par or delete things that really don't belong. This is editing. Now, a little perspective. CBM gets hundreds of thousands of visitors a day, of those many contribute articles to the site. Besides about 6-7 part-time VOLUNTEER helpers, this site is run by myself and Nate (my business partner). I appreciate and take note of what you're saying. You're not the first, nor will you be the last to want certain improvements--which in fact you'll be seeing rolled out in the next two months. But please consider the other side to your argument, and something that is just naturally true with such a large user-generated website like ours... Not everybody's contributions are front page material, and while we do our best to champion user submitted articles, not all of it will get on the main. And here's the REAL kicker. It is incumbant on the contributor to write interesting stuff WORTHY of the main. Sometimes the articles we see have so many spelling errors and punctuation problems that it isn't worth the effort even to edit it. Other's don't fit the CBM theme or just aren't of interest to the broader audience. So we may purposely leave them under the tabs. The volunteer editors have been made such because I can (usually) count on their contributions to be top notch. That is why their articles go straight to the front page, and that is why you see so much of their articles highlighted. Most of them also contribute daily. Not so with everybody. I think they do a pretty good job trying to help the better contributions get seen, but we are only human, and yes, some good articles don't make it to the front--although they can be easily found under the proper tab. BUT HEAR THIS ALL YOU ASPIRING WRITERS & EDITORS... I have said many times before, and I repeat again, I will make editors of any contributor that stands out and consistently produces good stuff. I just did this for two users yesterday. Now, articles by BleedtheFreak and HelaGood go straight to the main. Why? Because they do good articles that don't need editing. And they did enough of them that they caught my eye. So there is an open call out for good contributors who want special privileges to add to our site, and if you think I'm overlooking you, give me an alert to check you out. Oh, and don't forget to use the ad management tool we give you so you can make money with us as well. Regular contributors make between $200-$1100 dollars a month with google adsense. No other site offers you that either. It's our way to thank and reward you for good efforts. So it's up to you to get on the main. Go for it!

Watch for those new features and community improvements that we will be rolling out through the end of the year. You've already made the chatroom and new top story features a huge success, and we expect you'll love the other stuff we have in store. There will be lots more coming. As always, we want to provide the best place for our burgeoning CBM community, and you can count on us to listen to your suggestions.

Sincerely, Galactus

I mostly type editorials so i dont aim for front page stuff. I occasionally post some news becuase no one else has which often enough gets to the front page.

The people i see on the front page are there becuase they are really good at getting the news first.. and are able to present it well.

Occasionally two people get the same story at the same time and then i guess it comes down to how well the article is presented... the regular news posters are well practiced at laying out articles and information, and i expect often work with preset templates so they can post quicky and with consistent quality. This means 9 out 10 times there articles will look better thus go on the front page.

I often notice slight changes when anything i do goes on the front page, which is a good thing as its usually fixing some messup code or helping rewording a title here and there.. so i always appriciate and like to thank the editors who help with that.

Ok, I replied on Jman's article but I'll go over it again here. First off, I understand your frustration as I was once a contributor, looking for my stuff to make main. But the fact is, in the early days it wasn't always of a high enough standard, or I copied a little too much from the source, or it wasn't relevant etc etc. There is a lot of stuff that determines what makes the main here. But even at that, criteria aside it still falls back to Galactus' discretion. Obviously we can decide if we think something is worthy and we do, but in this case I can only speak for myself. If your article isn't plagiarized, isn't full of typos, hasn't been beaten to the punch, is news worthy OR a strong enough editorial or feature it will make main. As for why you see the same names out front all the time, well, maybe we just write more articles? I know I spend a lot of time on here, because its become more than a hobby. But I will still go through the tabs and see what I can main page from all our user content. Does everything we edotors write really deserve front page status? maybe not, but thats always going to be down to personal opinion after all!

i'm a long time reader and short time comment contributor, and as much as i LOVE this site, i come here for NEWS, not really opinions. the comments are a fun place to dish out opinions, and i read everyone's there, but i'm not interested in reading "oh boy! i hope some actress will play some role" on the main page. i appreciate the editorial tab/section, and surely others do and will continue also. everyone who makes this site great, keep up the great work!

Wow! I'm really overwhelmed with your response Galactus! Like I said, by NO means am I hating on anyone and your kind and VERY helpful reply is taken with helpful gratitude. Like I said before, the user content is what draws me to this site and I'm proud of everything I post no matter where it ends up. So once again, thank you for the explanation and your time!

I don't think I could put it any better than Galactus already has. Why do you see the same names on the main page over and over again? Probably because they're the ones who contribute good articles on a regular basis, but users who maybe only post one or two a week also get there just as quickly as long as their stuff is of the same standard. The majority of people who visit CBM want to just read news and I'm happy to be one of the dedicated volunteers who does their best to get that to them ASAP.

Great read, from both Superzero and Galactus. Been coming to this site for a long, long time and yes....it can be frustrating at times. But it can also be one of, if not the best website concepts out there. No other site out there allows users to do what is done here, so congratulations to Galactus and Nate for blazing a trail in the muddled mess that is the internet.

Trust me when I say, that if you are diligent, persistant and good at what you do, you will be rewarded.

Superzero, I commend you for stanind behind your beliefs and not backing down and acting like adult about your greivences.

Now...GROUP HUG!

@ECKSMANFAN

thank you friend, I agree with you about the concept of this site and to me it's what really sets it apart from the many other fan sites out there. I really don't know of ANY that allow the fans to have as much input as this one. Like I said before, don't confuse my minor irritation, which is now gone, for anger or resentment. I have had at least 3-5 articles appear on main. I never even thought that THIS one would end up where it did and that was not what I intended when I wrote it. LOL...I'm glad the staff was kind enough to go OUT OF THEIR WAY to answer my question the way they did and I hope that other posters out their benefit from it as well.
Group hug accepted and returned!

Personally, i feel that well fleshed out and professionally written editorials devoid of too much humor or emotion, definitely belong on the main page. And i mean that in a totally unbiased way. Even if i highly disagree with their opinion and regardless of what the topic is, just as long as it has some link to comic book films. Whether it be film or show reviews, fan casts or even fan art that features enough depth and skill, anything worth reading or seeing CAN be very well suited for the spotlight. Sadly, most of those get overshadowed and unnoticed/ignored on account of an abundance of one liner fan casts/reviews or grade school level editorials filled with "Oh Noes!!!", Shoulda, Coulda, Wouldas and "Use this for a script!!!". Unfortunately, some of those can come from editors of this site even though very rarely, who willingly use their volunteer editor "perk" to put their less brilliant work on the main page. But instead of focussing on how unfair that is, CBMers should focus on writing the best articles possible to eventually become an editor and get the same perk. If anyone feels they need some sort of article blueprint, try doing some research on which articles win Pulitzer Prizes and follow their lead. People would probably notice how the tabloids they are regularly fond of don't even come close to winning those and shouldn't be used as an example, regardless how much money or "clicks" they generate. IMHO, it's not all about "Substence over Style", it's more along the lines of "Class over Style".

@shaman

I agree with your stance on editorials. Being completely objective can be hard at times and adding a bit of the subjective can help take the dryness out and add a little bit of flavor. Hunter S Thompson proved that point very well.

Great work! I've been coming on to here since somewhere between 2007 or 2008 when I realized about all of the news and fan content. Then, earlier this year when I got my summer break from school, I decided to become a member and started writing stuff on here because I had become accustomed on here and also to test my writing skills. My early stuff didn't get any of the main treatment because of what Galactus mentioned and because some of them probably needed work. But then I managed to get four articles onto main: The 1st and 4th were news related and carried a large enough impact in terms of news that they would garner attention, the 2nd one was an editorial I had been working on for weeks about why I thought Taylor Momsen should play Gwen Stacy (the reason for what I just mentioned, I had putted a lot of hardwork and effort in trying to make it the best I could), and a feature involving who should've replaced Edward Norton as Bruce Banner because it was relevant and people all had their own says. For personal reasons, like school and my well being, I had to cut my writing on here unless I had the spare time and the enthusiasm to do one.

It can get frustrating trying to get noticed when it comes to news updates and original pieces from fans and users, but there are a lot of visitors on here that it can get difficult to follow everyone's work while still trying to keep in place the current news. I guess on the bright side this type of environment can bring out the best of us and our abilities as writers.

But either way I'm as glad as you are and feel blessed to have a site that gives creative freedom to it's users. :)

Superzero: I believe that this article and response from Galactus represents exactly what makes this site so appealing and endearing (at least to me). As an editor, I can tell you it is very easy to miss or overlook things sometimes. All I can say is that I try my best and will continue to do so.

And thanks for the shout out. I'm placing that on my list with the other one I received. ;)

tea@ While I appreciate boobs just as much as the next guy, the first and last girl could stand a bag photoshopped over their heads. Just saying... ;-) :-P

I was with you completely Galactus, until it got to the part that all editor's articles automatically go to main because they don't need editing. Umm...what about being relevant and worthy of having content that deserves to be on a main news page? I know it is all subjective, but I have seen plenty an article automatically placed on main by editors that don't need editing, but sure are insignificant to deem being on the front page, but I know that is all a matter of opinion. I think that is more of the issue that many have as opposed to how good the spelling and grammar is. Just an observation.

Edit- What RacerREX is referring to is part of what I am referring to. The judgement of what is main page newsworthy is pretty "iffy" at times and the redundancy can get annoying. I know..l know...I don't have to click on all the articles, but isn't that the purpose of having a website is to get people to click on all the links?

I see both sides. MrDCUniverse has a point, so does MarsAmbassador. I have only submitted a couple articles, and both made front page which was nice. I have seen plenty of articles with such GOD-awful spelling/grammar mistakes it's laughable! Minor point I guess, but still....

Quite frankly, I'm shocked and appalled when anything I write makes the main page.

No one should have to read that shit hahaha except for teabag... he has no choice.

All bullshit aside, you're not gonna find a better overall community in the realm of comics, movies, pop culture, than right here. While the news is great, and the reason most come here, I now come here more for the people. You can get this kind of news any number of places in the webiverse. What you won't find is the class of people that regularly post and contribute here. Top shelf all the way.

Thanks to all, especially Galactus, for being a part of this.
