Ok, by just reading the title of this article you are probably already thinking "Del Toro NEEDS to do Hellboy III!" So let me clarify: here is what I would want to see happen. Pacific Rim comes out, and Del Toro begins work on Hellboy III. He stays on as producer and writer of Pacific Rim 2. Hellboy III is a concluding chapter in the trilogy, and it wraps up all the story and plot points that have been set up in the first two films. Now that the Hellboy trilogy is done, and Pacific Rim still has Del Toro overlooking it, here is what I want to see Del Toro do.
In 2010, Universal released their remake of The Wolfman. They then said that that would begin a series of remakes that would include the Creature From the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein, the Mummy, and the Invisible Man. We have not seen any more remakes since then. The Wolfman was supposed to get a sequel, but that turned into the straight to DVD film Werewolf: The Beast Among Us.
While I thought the Wolfman remake was alright, I look at it as Universal's Green Lantern. WB wanted Green Lantern to start their universe, but Green Lantern just sort of came and went, and now WB wants us to forget it. Now they are trying to officialy start their universe with Man of Steel. I think Universal should follow what WB is doing, and take one of their biggest characters and officialy start their monster universe with that. What I am saying is; Universal should start Monster Cinematic Universe with a remake of Frankenstein.
The director of Frankenstein would obviously be Del Toro. But in the same way that Marvel has their cinematic universe of interconnected films, with Joss Whedon overlooking all of them (in Phase 2, anyway), that is what Universal should do. Have Del Toro direct the rebooted Frankenstein series, and have him overlook all of the other monster movie remakes. While this monster cinematic universe does not have to lead up to something as big as the Avengers, it could be interconnected with characters referancing things that happened in other films. Then, after a series of films, they could remake Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman. Then this could lead into remakes of the monster team up films like House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula. This would all, of course, be overseen by Del Toro.
There could also be phases in this monster cinematic universe. Phase one could include remakes of Frankenstein, Wolfman, Dracula, and the Mummy. At the end of Phase one, there is a remake of Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman. Then Phase two could include sequels and other monsters, like the Creature From the Black Lagoon and the Invisible Man. While I am usually against remakes because they are not good, I am fine with remakes of films from the 30's and 40's. They have not been touched for a long time, and I would like to see new takes on the classic monsters. Plus the fact that Del Toro is overlooking means they will probably be quality films.
What do you guys think of the idea of Del Toro overlooking a Monster Cinematic Universe? What other monsters do you think should be put in the universe? Sound off below, and let me know!
