GODZILLA VS. KONG Has The Lowest Budget Of All Warner Bros.' "MonsterVerse" Movies

Godzilla vs. Kong is one of 2021's most highly anticipated movies, but it sounds like there may have been some corner cutting when the budget is compared to other "MonsterVerse" titles from Warner Bros.!

With Legendary thinking about taking legal action against Warner Bros. following the studio's decision to have Godzilla vs. Kong debut on HBO Max and in theaters at the same time, the crossover could prove to be one of 2021's most controversial releases.

Putting that aside, there's been some negative buzz surrounding the movie for a while now. It's been hit by a few delays, while the lack of any sort of sneak peek has definitely set off some alarm bells. While Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island both did decent, if not massive, numbers at the box office, Godzilla: King of the Monsters proved to be something of a high-profile critical and commercial flop.

Warner Bros. may have taken that into consideration while making Godzilla vs. Kong, because The New York Times is reporting that the budget for the crossover event is around $155 million.

That's by no means a small amount of money, but Godzilla: King of the Monsters cost between $170 million - $200 million, while 2014's Godzilla had a budget of $160 million and Kong: Skull Island set the studio back a whopping $185 million. This makes Adam Wingard's "MonsterVerse" movie the cheapest yet.

Does this mean we should be concerned? Well, it could be a sign that Godzilla vs. Kong isn't quite as epic as hoped, though scaling back the action might not be a bad thing after the last effort.

What do you guys think?

King of the monsters really killed my interest

The human story was boring

The monster action was pretty standard, nothing stood out, not even the final battle

The 2014 film is the best film of the monsterverse. Didnt have a lot of godzilla, but when he showed up it was worth it. Plus the human story was pretty good

@dracula - The 2014 one was a legit good monster horror disaster flick.
2019 one is pure ass except for some monster fights here and there.
Kong on the other I thought was quite fun and solid one time watch.

@dracula - the franchise for me died when Brian Cranston's character died.

@dracula @bman263 @JustALurker - Have you guys ever watched any of the old Giant monster/Kaiju movies Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, ..etc...

None of those movies have ever been about the humans sure they try to place human stories too but no body ever pays attention to that.

Godzilla Vs. Biolante & Godzilla 2000 were probably the most boring for me even though Biolante set the stage for Godizlla future story wise.

Nobody goes to see human act no matter how great the actors are it's all about the monsters. Besides Japan based the first Godzilla as a monster film and the effects of radiation. After that there movies were more leaning towards kids because guess what kids love destruction-porn with giant monsters.

@dracula - the 2014 film is really underrated, it is actually a really good film that many people underrate just because we don't get enough godzilla.
THere are flaws in the film but it's still manages to be a very succesful film in the end.

Not like Kotm that was just a bad film all around and the effects being atrocious.

@dracula - My favorite is Skull Island. Just really fun popcorn movie, which had decent balance between the humans and monsters (humans weren't so bland and boring that it was torture to wait for the next monster scene, but they didn't take over the movie too much either, leaving room for plenty monster action).

@Matador - Someone hasn't seen the original Godzilla (still the best one, BTW.) or Shin Godzilla.

@FinnishDude - Raymond Burr

@JustALurker - Exactly, whomever thought Aaron Taylor-Johnson would make a better protagonist than Cranston shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a camera. They should have taken the road less traveled and made Johnson be the "twist" death.

@dracula - Far too little and too mundane monster action, for how overwhelmingly incoherent and unengaging the human stuff was -- even with an AMAZING cast, which is the real shame. The only decent action sequence was the jet fight with Rodan. It did look great though. I feel like the budget cut for GvK will mostly manifest in crappier CGI.

@Matador - No, the original Japanese cast in the original Japanese version.

@FinnishDude - I saw both but I grew up watching the Burr version so that was my introduction.

@Matador - The original 1954 Godzilla had a great human story revolving around the love triangle and the ultimate decision on how to handle both Godzilla and the oxygen destroyer. It’s just that no one knows how to write a decent human conflict on these films anymore.

@dracula - Hopefully the next one starts with all the humans clustered together and a quick stomp by one of the beasts. Like the Godzilla vs Bambi animated short. Move it along quicker. Seriously, the humans just shouting while their actions have zero effect on the situation....reminds me of Bay-formers...

It's all in the execution.
