It's fair to say that
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the most controverisal movie Lucasfilm has ever released, and much of that boils down to the creative decisions made by director Rian Johnson. Mark Hamill certainly hasn't shied away voicing his displeasure with Luke Skywalker's arc in the movie, and it sounds like John Boyega was equally as dissatisfied.
"The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid," he said in a recent interview with
Hypebeast.
"The Last Jedi, if I'm being honest, I'd say that was feeling a bit iffy for me."
"I didn't necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that, and that's something that I spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about and we had conversations about it," Boyega added. "And it was hard for all of us, because we were separated." It sounds like his biggest gripe is that the three main heroes weren't together, and we got zero development with Rey and Finn's relationship as a result.
"I guess the original Star Wars films there was much more of a trio feel where it was essentially about Luke’s journey, but Han and Leia there was a strong dynamic, which I think, I don’t know how quickly we’re going to be able to establish that longterm dynamic with [The Rise of Skywalker]. But if it’s exploring that dynamic, then that would be cool."
It was a shame that the trio went their separate ways and it means we never got to delve further into Rey and Finn's dynamic. The former didn't actually meet Poe Dameron until the final few minutes (and that was actually at the request of original
Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow).
With any luck,
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will make up for that, as we already know that Finn, Poe and Rey do share at least a few scenes together.
