AVATAR Producer Jon Landau Confirms They've Already Shot AVATAR 4's First Act And Planned Out The Rest

Avatar franchise producer Jon Landau has shared an unexpected update about Avatar 4 (yes, 4), revealing that James Cameron has already shot the movie's first act. Find more details on that after the jump!

Avatar quickly became the highest-grossing movie of all time when it was released in 2009, with a couple of recent re-releases helping to propel James Cameron's 3D sci-fi epic to a whopping $2.9 billion at the worldwide box office. That's a record it will be hard for any movie to top, though we're sure Disney is hoping Avatar: The Way of Water will come close.

The second and third movies were shot back-to-back, so whatever happens at the box office this December, we'll see a third chapter in the epic story Cameron is crafting.

Franchise producer Jon Landau recently took part in a press conference at the Busan International Film Festival, and revealed a surprising update on the future of the Avatar series beyond that threequel. "We’ve completed most of the first act of 'Avatar 4' and there were logistical reasons why we needed to do that," he told Variety (via SFFGazette.com).

"We’ve designed most of the whole movie for 'Avatar 4' but we haven’t actually filmed all of it - just the first act." So, the first act of Avatar 4 is done, while the rest of the movie isn't too far behind. That's pretty incredible, and we'd bet on Disney not wasting any time in moving forward with shooting that fourth chapter after the sequel is released later this year.

"With each sequel, we’re going to introduce audiences to new cultures and new biomes," Landau continued. "We don’t leave behind the cultures that we’ve met."

"As filmmakers, we have a responsibility to use our art form to challenge people to see things differently. And science fiction allows us the opportunity to be a metaphor for the world in which we live without preaching about it. Because if you preach, you only reach those who are already converted."

We shouldn't be shocked that Cameron has such big plans for the future, especially as all signs point to him devoting the rest of his filmmaking career to the Avatar franchise.

Avatar: The Way of Water arrives in theaters on December 14, while Avatar 4 is set to follow on December 20, 2024.

James always touted how he had finished “almost all” of his sequels. So this news reads as humbling towards Cameron.

Haven’t enjoyed the first, don’t see much franchise potential but I’ll be happy for the fans if it ends up working

I just hope the story, lore and characters are more interesting. It’s a neat basis for a sci-fi story but the first one felt so shallow. Make it more than just the visuals. Give us some interesting themes and lore. Have something more unique to say.

I guess if 2 bombs, the Avatar's animations and textures will start to resemble that of ReBoot.

So he’s basically foreshadowing that a biome/culture from Avatar 2 will be prominent in the beginning of Avatar 4. If I were Cameron I’d politely ring my friend here and tell him to shut the [frick] up

I still can't believe after 12 years they only filmed one sequel. I thought the whole reason why it was taking forever was because they filmed all of them back to back.

@WakandaTech - Not Harry Potter. That was always the franchise that got away. Not that they didn't try. I read that when bidding for the film rights was official on, Bob Iger invited Rowling to Disneyland to convince her of the plans, but Rowling wasn't interested in an animated adaptation or any of the theme park ideas. (Apperantly the Imagineers pitched her a rollercoaster named "The Dumbo-dore") So she went with WB instead.
And you know what? Good call! I love Disney and I love Harry but the two just don't go together. They are completely different kinds of magic imo. As big of a Disney-nerd as I am, I'm still glad that there is one franchise in my personal Popculture Olympus (Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Animation and HP) that they don't control.

I’m looking forward to the sequels. I want to some beautiful imagery. Hoping Arnold Schwarzenegger has a role in the movies.

Really excited for this now that it's finally happening. Can't wait to see where all this work went into. Avatar (despite the unfortunate name) really has the potential to become a massive franchise.

It’ll be hilarious if Avatar 2 bombs. I imagine some people will go see it out of curiosity. If it sucks (like the first one), that should be it for the sequels. I’d prefer a sequel to Alita….

@Humperdoo - First one was awesome. But an Alita sequel would also be cool.

@Humperdoo - The first one is highly overrated. The 3D gimmick won’t work this time cause most people have grown tired of it. Only a good story will help. Preferably something original this time.
Drace24
Drace24 - 10/7/2022, 2:50 PM
@X75 - Honestly, I think it's the opposite. The story was fantastic but people just write it off because of the 3D gimmick. It's just not true that that was all that made the movie successfull (although I'm not disputing that it's the main reason for why it was THAT successfull). I didn't watch it in 3D - in fact, I can't watch 3D - and still found Avatar to be a one of a kind experience. It's just the incredible design of it all. The set- and creature design. The worldbuilding. It's absolutely a universe that feels real and immersive and just dropdead gorgious to look at. And I still don't see what problems people have with the story. It may not be the most original, but it absolutely works. When they killed the Hometree... I felt that.
X75
X75 - 10/8/2022, 5:27 AM
@Drace24 - I've seen it once on (2D) BluRay. Sure, the design is great, it's just that the story was a mashup of a couple of other movies and for me it was very predictable. But maybe I'm getting old and/or I've seen way too many movies :D
Drace24
Drace24 - 10/8/2022, 8:47 AM
@X75 - I mean, yeah, it is basically Pocahontas in space. But I just don't see how that's a bad thing. Star Wars is also just Dune mixed with fairytale, western and samurai movie influences. Nothing is ever truly original.

@HulkisHoly - Why?

@MosquitoFarmer -

The same reason I don’t want anymore fast and furious movies, or fantastic beasts movies or how they made the hobbit into a bloated trilogy of filler and nonsense for money.

I don’t like creative decisions solely based on money, especially on IP’s that are bankrupt.

The first avatar partially made as much money as it did because people were willing to pay double the cost of a normal ticket at the time because of RealD tech. But the story is a worse version of Last Samurai, Dances with Wolves, Ferngully, etc.
The story has been done before dozens of times and way less cheesy or preachy.

I, along with lots of other people don’t think avatar was even a good movie, let alone one of the best movies ever made. And definitely doesn’t deserve 3 SEQUELS over a decade later.

Drace24 - 10/7/2022, 3:03 PM
@HulkisHoly - Hate to tell you this, but... all movies are made to make money. Kind of the only reason they exist. In fact, you might call it an industry.

You, along with those lots of other people, always have the option to just stop watching.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 10/7/2022, 7:56 PM
@HulkisHoly - If you think this whole Avatar story came out of James Cameron’s mind only because he had money he wanted to make, you don’t get filmmakers or why he’s making 4 films. Especially for a story that people had problems with the general story.

@MosquitoFarmer -

Was that English?
Dude, use some commas please of periods of fix your autocorrect.

Of course all movies at made to make money but that’s not true that they all are soulless.

Some films are more artsy and don’t make a dime but their creators are still glad they made them. Would they have wanted it to make a billion…sure, but that’s not why they made it. Some people genuinely love storytelling and whether or not their film will make millions or not, they were still going to make it, whether on the small screen, big screen, comic book, script, novel, etc.

Drace24 - 10/10/2022, 11:41 AM
@HulkisHoly - Again. If everybody had this mindset, there wouldn't be a film industry. And therefor a lot less opportunity for artists to actually make a living. Sure, there are artists who can afford not to care. But most would actually kinda like to... you know... eat.

I imagine either way they may have to call back to moments from the previous two films, whether in direct flashback or a different point of view, so that alone adds up that they’ve shot plenty.
