AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Is Now The Seventh Highest-Grossing Movie Domestically After Passing INFINITY WAR

Over three months since it first hit theaters, James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water continues to make waves at the box office.

The sci-fi sequel recently passed Titanic to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide, and while it's unlikely to knock the next film, Avengers: Endgame, out of the way to claim the #2 spot, it has overtaken The Infinity Saga finale's predecessor domestically.

With a total domestic gross of $678.873 million, The Way of Water has passed Avengers: Infinity War ($678.815M) to move into seventh place on the all-time domestic list.

The movie was nominated for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards, which probably gave ticket sales a bit of a boost.

"With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure."

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham serve as the film’s executive producers.

Have you been to see Avatar: The Way of Water on the big screen, or were you happy to wait for its streaming debut?

I didn’t realize No Way Home was #3 domestic all time. Shows how popular the nostalgia factor is with US audiences. Even if Marvel continues to stumble through Phase 5 and 6, any movie with legacy characters (Deadpool 3, Secret Wars) will likely do very well.

@mountainman - Not to downplay the nostalgia factor, but also post-pandemic theater circumstances was part of the factor too.

@MosquitoFarmer - I mean, that's also a month after eternals. It's really a matter of giving audiences what they want.

@Origame - I think another key factor is releasing in that December holiday window which is legit steroids for a film's box office. Just look at that list, 5 of the 10 were released in December and ate for weeks. It was the only reason why Aquaman made it to a billion.

@Origame - Precisely. People wanted to get back to the movies and normalcy in general, but for the right movie. And this was one everyone was willing to go sit in a crowded theater for, and go to with family and friends. There was a lot of draw to the experience.

@LongMayHeReign - I mean, overall the success has to do with a number of factors. Even just the fact it's Spiderman helped.

Cameron has indeed won.

The movie would be #1 all time, if in addition to being very pretty, it was also good.

I'm so out of touch I forgot this was still in theaters. I haven't been to the movies ages. My brother gave me an Alamo Drafthouse giftcard for Christmas; I gotta go spend a day there.

It's interesting what Americans will go out to the theaters and see when compared to the rest of the world.
