BOX OFFICE: ELYSIUM Takes The Top Spot With $30.5 Million In Another Crowded Weekend

In yet another crowded weekend at the North American box office, several high profile releases found themselves earning nowhere near as much as expected. While Neil Blomkamp's Elysium is far from a flop, it too hasn't performed as well as the studio were hoping. Read on for details on that and more!

We're The Millers was the surprise hit this weekend thanks to a five day total of over $38 million, but it didn't quite perform well enough over the past three days to steal the top spot from Elysium. While Sony were banking on the sci-fi movie making upwards of $35 million, it fell short with a so-so $30.5 million total. Back in 2009, District 9 actually had a $37.4 million debut, but didn't face off against anywhere near as much competition. A 'B' CinemaScore for Elysium also didn't help word of mouth as the weekend went on. Disney's Cars spin-off Plans had a debut of $22.5 million, far from its predicted $30 million. However, that's still not a bad result for a movie which was originally set to go straight to DVD. The biggest loser this weekend was Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters which earned a disappointing $23.5 million total after opening on Wednesday, including a weekend gross of $14.6 million. That's a long way behind the $38.7 million earned by the first Percy Jackson.

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

STARRING:

Matt Damon as Max Da Costa
Jodie Foster as Secretary Delacourt
Sharlto Copley as Kruger
Wagner Moura as Spider
Alice Braga as Frey
Diego Luna as Julio
William Fichtner as John Carlyle
Faran Tahir as Minister Patel

My daughter tried to go see Percy Jackson at a Regal and Sony apparently wouldn't give them the film over a financial matter. I don't know if that's all of Regal or this theater in particular.

30 for a film that should have made 50 easy (Sony lowballed the estimate when they saw it wouldn't do 50) is a flop, but I'm sure you'll see commercials telling you its the number 1 movie in America. Its on top this weekend, but in the long run, its a flop. And so is the wolverine...they'll both make enough worldwide to cover their budgets and make a profit, but not enough to justify another movie. And for Fox, it could have a ripple effect, hurting DOFP. Certainly hope not, but the public is very fickle these days.

Elysium looked cool......but the story was all over the place....plus a lot of stuff happened by "magic" in this movie......no real explanation for anything...stuff just happened or was like that for no real reason...

Also I though Jodie Foster was awful in this.....every time she talked her accent was different??!!

@marantas

We already know Wolverine isn't a flop since its already covered the money it took to make and market it, as for Elysium it should really have been delayed to a later date cause now its gonna be screwed over because of a cash grab of Planes, an R rated comedy thats pretty bad from what I hear and Percy Jackson 2....

Hopefully the international numbers save Elysium.

I think summer of 2013 will definitely go down in history as the Summer of Disappointment. I had extremely high hopes for this and like most of the movies this summer I was let down. It wasn't terrible but it definitely wasn't that good. It was ok amazing visuals but a story that was cliched as hell and a tad boring. It's crazy that World War Z actually turned out to be my favorite movie of the summer.

I liked Elysium, well enough, but I expected more, especially since it's Blomkamp. District 9 was better, and given his distaste for Hollywood, I bet Blomkamp agrees.

District 9 is a better film.
Elysium had a weak story & aside from Damon, the acting was bad.
Effects were cool, weapon action was cool.

The hand to hand combat at end had that awful shaky movement & fast cuts.
Just get a good fight coordinator & don't make the fighting so muddled.
It's worth one viewing only.

As I said, enough to cover the budgets and a little profit, but not enough for the studios to green light sequels with any confidence.

Elysium is overrated in my opinion, because of District 9. It's okay, but it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination.

The Wolverine is doing just fine, worldwide, and won't hurt expectations for DOFP one bit.

And a lot of people poo-pooed World War Z and it just passed the $500M mark, so a sequel is probably being discussed as we speak.

I just don't understand why Pacific Rim didn't do better in North America. Crossing my fingers it does enough worldwide to warrant a sequel, though if it doesn't I can live with the stand alone one-shot.

if you love sci-fy or fantasy, you already love elysium. i'd say this movie is by far the best film of 2013.

I have to eat crow and admit I was wrong. I was one of those jerks that was hoping this movie would fail miserably. I predicted $22M max, and that was way off.

My only consolation is this movie will never turn a profit.

Neil Blompkamp has a great eye for action even though his movies are the most action packed they still have cool action scenes. I really loved the violence effects in District 9.
