BOX OFFICE: WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Opens Strong in China; SPIDER-MAN Plummets Massive 85%

After underperforming in both North America and most of the world, it looks like the latest Planet of the Apes film has finally found the success it deserves. The Matt Reeves-directed film generated $20 million on its opening day in the Middle Kingdom. This, of course, includes Thursday preview numbers as well. The third installment of the trilogy is currenty on pace for a massive $60 million opening weekend. This would, according to box office insiders, set the film for an overall total of between $120 million and $130 million in China alone! That would mean the blockbuster could very well end up above the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office.

This opening is well above the opening of the previous intallment, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($47 million opening and $107 milllion overall). Just like that film, War for the Planet of the Apes is also receiving outstanding word of mouth and praise from both Chinese critics and audiences.

Meanwhile Spider-Man Homecoming is set to have an unexpectedly massive drop on its second weekend in China. The Marvel Studios flick dropped a brutal 85% on its second Friday in the Middle Kingdom. It earned $3.1 million down from last Friday's $22.2 million. The current total of the Tom Holland-led film in China is $93.1 million and it is set to have a $12 million second weekend down from its large opening of $70 million. Box office insiders say that it will finish below $120 million there. While that might seem surprising to some, that comes after mixed reception and word of mouth from Chinese audiences. Of course that shouldn't take away from its great success worldwide.

Good. Homecoming has already made too much money. I don't get why everybody loved it so much. And I don't understand why any fan of the comics would like the movie. I'm truly baffled when some folks say Holland's whiny, irresponsible, Stark ass-kissing interpretation is the best version ever.. Moving on-- Apes deserves to be a 1 billion film. It's the ONLY other film this year that made me cry besides Logan. It's an Oscar contender for sure.

War for the Planet of the Apes is an underrated film. However I will say that it is a film that is not terribly memorable but it is a nice way to end the story of Cesar!

@Forthas - yes, thank you about the not memorable comment. I couldn't find the words but I think that was my feeling as well. I actually think its super OVER rated but you hit it on the head with not memorable. I am still shocked it has over 92% on RT. If anything, War has like no payoff to the various things they set up through the movie. Or it was more like, Hey this guy is totally going to do this because it's been foreshadowed ...surprise! We didn't do what the foreshadowing made you think would happen! I think maybe that's why critics loved it so much

Homecoming wasn't good at all. People like that movie because it's made by marvel

@RawGod - "Homecoming wasn't good at all. People like that movie because it's made by marvel"

And maybe Marvel made a good movie that they liked? Gee, ever wonder that!

Dumbass logic. Just drop it already for christs sake.

@BlackStar25 - the movie should've been on the Disney channel on Friday at 9pm. The story line was boring, the fighting was average.

@RawGod - Wonder Woman sucked hard. The only reason people loved that movie because DC made it...
