Check Out The Trailer & Poster For Bad Robot's 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE

Surprise! Have J.J. Abrams, Bad Robot and director Dan Trachtenberg secretly been working on a sequel to Matt Reeves' giant monster flick? Well... kinda! Abrams says this is a "blood relative" to Cloverfield, but take a look at the trailer for yourselves and see what you make of it...

Audiences were in for a surprise during last night's screening of Michael Bay‘s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, as they were shown a trailer for a movie from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company that seemed to be some sort of Cloverfield follow-up.

Abrams has since released a statement to Collider. “The idea came up a long time ago during production," said the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director. "We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.” What exactly does blood relative mean in this context? We're not certain, but we can assume this is at least set in the same universe as Cloverfield. Check out the trailer below.

Thoughts? 10 Cloverfield Lane was written by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken and Damien Chazelle, and directed by Dan Trachtenberg. It stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., and is scheduled for release on March 11th 2016.

Looks very interesting and claustrophobic. Good to see a movie where the first you know of it is the trailer.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead should get a CBM role, wonder who she could play?

This was kept under wraps for a while, I see. I'm very excited to see the Cloverfield Cinematic Universe.

@RorMachine
By "blood relation" he means something related by birth.

Interesting. It seems like maybe the story takes place after the incident during the fallout period following the bombing of New York. Side note: Winstead in panties

After watching it again, maybe it's actually during the incident. I hope a follow up movie actually explains it's origins. I still think Cloverfield is the first wave of an alien invasion. The sequel? Two Cloverfields...and then each sequential followup would just add one more.

@ Hellboy6666

They have explained the origin of the monster, just not in the movie. You had to be into all the viral marketing that was released before the film.

Basically, the main character works for Slusho, the drink company and it is based out of Japan, which is where he's getting ready to move. The main ingredient in Slusho is a type of kelp found deep underwater, that also happens to be radioactive. The Tagruato company mines this plant. (Tagruato means turtle in Japanese)

The plant caused some tyoe of mutation between a turtle and some big sea animal, possibly a whale which is hinted at in the viral marketing. The little parasite monsters that fall off of the big monster are like those sea animals that live on the bodies of bigger sea animals and feed off of the algae that grows on them. (Like those little fish you see on sharks all the time). At some point the monster was lying dormant at the bittom of the sea.

At the end of Cloverfield, the very last scene, you can see an object falling from the sky in the ocean in the backgeound.

This Object is a satellite crashing to earth from orbit. This is what woke up the monster and pissed it off.

So, sorry, no aliens.

J.J. Abrams is a pretty great, shitty filmmaker - yet no one grabs my attention quite like him. Excited.

"The monster is a deep-sea creature with an unknown evolutionary history. The species apparently has a very long life-span, as the creature is still an infant during the events of the film, regardless of being alive for thousands of years. It grew to its massive size through consuming large amounts of Seabed's Nectar, a natural steroid-like substance which is very addictive and causes increased cell division and growth, and is used by Tagruato's subsidiary company, "Slusho!", for use as their secret ingredient in their frozen drink of the same name. At some point afterward, the monster went into a sort of hibernation.

The monster was first discovered by one of Tagruato's marine biologists, Kazui Ichigawa. Tagruato later stole his laptop and files and killed him and his family while they were on vacation in Daisetsu-San National Park, covering the assassination up as the result of a gas explosion in their trailer. Later, they used this information to locate the monster and built the Chuai station over top of it, claiming (falsely) that they were drilling for oil there.

Shortly before the rig was supposed to open, Tagruato sent several submarines from the station down six miles to the ocean floor to study the monster. This action disturbed the creature from its slumber, and in a fit of rage and fear it destroyed the station, then proceeded towards Manhattan."

I just realized something.

Back when the original Cloverfield was being made, no one had any idea it existed, much less the name. It wasn't until the first Transformers movie came out that Abrams had the first Cloverfield trailer appear, and no one had any idea what it was. Then the crazy viral marketing started and there were tons of hints hidden in the marketing and the trailer.

This is identical to that. No one had any idea Abrams was working on anither Cloverfield film until this trailer popped up last night, seemingly out of the blue. I wouldn't be surprised if this movie gears up a huge viral marketing campaign that has people noticing the tiniest of details from the trailers. Like the numbers pressed on the jukebox. Might 4813 be significant in some way?

I hope this is the case. I loved the marketing of Cloverfield.

@SimplyAz I've been saying it forever if Marvel gets the balls to use Spider-Woman it should be Mary.

@ Omega so what was the satellite's part in the whole thing? There a plenty ofnplaces online that suggest the satellite is ultimately what awakened the monster and freed it.

I really liked the first one. I always imagined they'd follow it up with another found-footage movie, taking place parallel to and beyond the first movie -- and we get a passing cameo of the first movie's protagonists, alive and well in a hospital.

CLOVERFIELD 3, maybe?
SimplyAz
SimplyAz - 1/15/2016, 5:29 AM
@UltimateCookie She would be fantastic in that role, and would be down for that.
Maybe she can play Lana in any future Justice League movie, or even Zatanna.

UltimateCookie - 1/15/2016, 5:46 AM
@SimplyAz Agreed. My only issue is I dont see Marvel bringing the character to screen while Mary is still able to play the role or they'll just get someone else.

My theory: During or after the events of CLOVERFIELD, Doomsday prepper John Goodman takes his family underground to wait out the apocalypse. M.E. Winstead realizes there is no apocalypse, and the movie segues into the first episode of THE UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT.

Loved the first film and excited by this "sequel". Slightly concerned that with a budget of only $5m we won't get to see as much action as the first film. Wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the film takes place in the bunker. That being said I have a lot of faith in Abrams to deliver!

There WAS actually news on this. Though it was that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman had signed on with Bad Robot to do a post-apocalyptic movie. The reason it didn't make headlines was because the news hit the very same weekend of the Fappening and any media stuff about the Winstead was focused more towards the negative. However, there was never a mention that this was the Cloverfield sequel when the news hit.
