Denis Villeneuve’s New DUNE Movie Won’t Be A Remake Of David Lynch’s 1984 Adaptation

The upcoming Dune film adaptation will adhere more to Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel, and veer away from David Lynch’s flawed 1980's version, which does maintain something of a cult following...

Although respected and seen as an entertainment pioneer, David Lynch has created many works that have been divisive. Upon its 1984 release, his film Dune was panned by many critics, but since then it has developed a cult following. The film took many liberties with Frank Herbert’s novel, including a change to the appearance of several characters, as well as a drastic alteration to the ending of the story.

In 2016 it was reported that Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival Director Denis Villeneuve would direct a new interpretation of the novel, and in a recent interview, Villeneuve clarified the direction the new adaptation will take:

“It will not have any link with the David Lynch movie. I'm going back to the book, and going to the images that came out when I read it.”

This statement provides fans of the novel with the assurance that this rendition of the sci-fi classic won’t make the same mistakes as the prior film. The director did, however, discuss that this was a personal movie for him, so I wouldn’t expect a shot for shot retelling of the book:

“I mean David Lynch is one of the best filmmakers alive, I have massive respect for him. But when I saw his adaptation I was impressed, but it was not what I had dreamed of, so I'm trying to make the adaptation of my dreams.”

Denis Villeneuve has been on quite a run lately, particularly in the sci-fi genre. At this point in time, it appears that fans of Frank Herbert’s novels are going to get a rendition that is both respectful and unique.

If done right, the epic-ness of a Dune franchise could rank up there with Star Wars

Just saw Blade Runner this weekend and it’s my favorite movie of the year by far. I can’t [frick]ing wait to see what Villeneuve does with this.

Also, if he had to direct one CBM movie, what would you guys pick? I think he would knock Moon Knight out of the [frick]ing park

@PicolasCage - Batman, Suicide Squad, any Brubaker/Phillips collaboration (Fatale, Sleeper, Incognito), Black Widow, Swamp Thing, and yeah Moon Knight.

I love Villeneuve though so I can picture him on a lot haha

@dotherightthing - I hope he gets the same budget as he got for Blade Runner. The problem is that they need to build a fanbase to get to Star Wars level of success. I think they need to start slow and should do a miniseries on HBO or Showtime then move on to films.

Denis Blade Runner was awesome. A shame not a lot of people didn't take to it. Dune will no doubt be amazing under his guiding eye.

Denis, Denis!
Why you do this to me?
Every time I see your films
It's the best stuff I see

You arrived to Blade Runner
Yours was better than the first!
On opposite films day
Yours are some of the worst

So now you arrive to Dune
The release can't come too soon

And if you were wondering,
I came up with this as I went along
Instead of putting it on paper,
I took it off the dome

You can take it as a poem
You can take it as a song
But one thing I know?
The wait for Dune will be too long

Thank you lol

Dune almost seems like 2 movies worth of content. And then there is the next book. And then there is the next book...

@MarkV - Doesn't Star Wars have hundreds of books?

@MarkV - 3movies. There 3 books to the novel; Dune, Mua'Dib and The Prophet. Each at least deserves its own movie. Im not sure a film would do them justice though.

No to this. I think Dune is to intricate of a story to be summed up in just one movie. I would much rather see it on HBO as an alternative after Game of Thrones. The scheming, plotting and backstabbing is on par with GoT but its still so unique! There is no way the two could ever be compared. I have read all of the original Dune series and Frank Herbert on screen, if they could actually capture the tone an essence of the books and what they are about; if they could make you care about and invest in these characters the way the author does, that would be epic. I do not believe one movie can do the whole book justice, three may not even be sufficient but certainly not one.
