DUNE Expected To Take In As Much As $70 Million Globally This Weekend

Dune is finally set to hit theaters in the US this week, and despite the movie's day-and-date streaming debut, Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic is expected to take in as much as $70M globally.

Dune has been playing in several overseas locations for weeks now, but Denis Villeneuve's critically-acclaimed sci-fi epic is finally set to hit theaters in the U.S. this weekend, when it will also be available to stream on HBO Max.

This day-and-date release has led to concern that the movie, which only adapts Part 1 of Frank Herbert's novel, may not make enough at the box office for Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel, but the latest updates are very encouraging.

DUNE Review: Denis Villeneuve's Otherworldly Tour De Force Is Jaw-Dropping Cinema

Deadline reports that Dune looks set to for a global opening in the $70M+ range, which includes China and 40 other overseas markets. Domestically, the movie is tracking towards $30M-$35M, but exhibitors have indicated that presales "are squashing everything that’s come before it, i.e. No Time to Die, and Marvel's Shang-Chi."

Dune has taken in $129.3 million since it opened internationally last month.

Estimates could be off, of course, especially in the current climate, but this is definitely a positive sign that Villeneuve will be given the opportunity to return to Arrakis and finish this story.

Do you guys plan on seeing Dune at the theater, or on HBO Max? We'd highly recommend the former, because this is one movie you don't want to miss on the big screen.

I have the film booked 3 times (2 in regular viewings and 1 in IMAX).

I've already seen it at the first viewing and it's an absolute masterpiece.

I am beyond excited for my second screening tomorrow and the third one in IMAX on Saturday.

I am even more enthusiastic to see all the small details that i might've missed on during the first viewing.

@Waddles - Nah, loyalty card.

Paying £13 a month.

Technically I clear it out the moment i watch my first film in the month. Considering I go to the cinema 5-6 times a month, that's 5-6 free viewings throughout that month.

@kylo0607 - I've seen it, i didnt think it was a masterpiece at all. Good? Sure. But getting half a story (Act 1, and half of Act 2) really disappointed me even though i knew this was a Part 1 of 2 movies. Hoping part 2 gets made but to me this movie waaaaay too over-hyped IMO. I guess you all will see it soon enough tomorrow!

@kylo0607 - Hoping it does well, got my ticket booked too in the USA. But wow 3 times? Movie is close to 3 hrs. Hopefully it makes enough over here to have a sequel. No time to die severely underperformed over here with a similar runtime and it was theater exclusive. Dune is premering on Hbo Max for free if your a subscriber.

WB better not looking at the BO as an indication for if a second part is wanted. They should just make it, no excuses

When discovery finally takes over WB they might not greenlight a sequel🤔

Esspecially if they keep WBs A.I. that greenlights movies👀...

that A.I. must be stopped. Anybody good at hacking?💁

There's some weird irony in an auteur's movie needing to make money because it needs a sequel to be complete

@OmegaDaGrodd - to be fair, Lord of the Rings wouldn’t be nearly as good if it was only Fellowship of the Ring

Exciting news because I really really want to have a sequel. I saw Dune this Monday and I was surprised to see a packed theater despite this being released a month ago here in Europe. Definitely in my top five scifi movies of all time, my only complaint is the ending but fortunately I knew in advance movie covers only the first half of the book.

Visuals, music and audio in general were amazing and all main actors brought their A-game. Some might have reservations about Jason Momoa but he was great as Duncan Idaho, his career best I think.
