Chris McQuarrie: EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 Idea "Locked & Loaded;" Teases MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 6

Tom Cruise's Edge Of Tomorrow was the biggest & most welcome surprise of 2014 and it sounds like we could be closer than ever to a sequel as Chris McQuarrie has shared a pretty sweet update.

Doug Liman's universally adored Edge Of Tomorrow, which starred Tom Cruise & Emily Blunt, was undoubtedly one of the best outings of 2014 and after an extended run in theaters, the film managed to achieve sleeper hit status with a worldwide gross of over $370 million.

Back in July, during the promotional tour for his critically acclaimed action sequel Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Cruise shared that he had already pitched his idea for a potential Edge Of Tomorrow sequel to Emily Blunt, Doug Liman, & writer Chris McQuarrie. Later, in separate interviews, both McQuarrie & Blunt confirmed they had heard Cruise's pitch and teased that it was actually a pretty great idea.

It's been a while since we've heard anything new about the potential sequel, but while promoting yesterday's Blu-ray/DVD release of Rogue Nation, McQuarrie, in a new interview with Collider, shared the most intriguing detail yet: "We have the idea for the sequel locked and loaded." Well, it doesn't get more exciting than that. But, what's the status of the film? Has there been a treatment written yet? Or is it still just a seedling of an idea? McQuarrie answers: "I don’t know what I can say. I can only say it’s a going concern." A little something is certainly better than nothing, so this little tidbit should tide fans over until we hear something more concrete, which hopefully happens sooner than later.

As for the already announced Mission: Impossible 6, which McQuarrie is returning to write & direct, it sounds like he & Cruise are already hard at work designing a much more complex action sequence for the highly anticipated sequel. McQuarrie teases the new sequence: "Look, we definitely have to raise the bar, we’ve got to do that every time. And we have an idea for one sequence in particular and it’s one we’re very, very excited about. It’s going to be incredibly challenging to do, and we’re very excited."

There's a fairly good chance the sequence he's describing here is the glass bridge stunt, which he decided not to use in Rogue Nation. Back in July, while speaking with movie|fone, he described the elaborate sequence, also teasing that this stunt would likely make an appearance in a future Mission: "There was one we really loved [that involved] a glass bridge -- a footbridge going from one building to another, And that glass device Ethan uses to break into the factory or the power plant [in "Rogue Nation"], he uses the same glass breaking device to destroy this entire glass bridge." With enemies coming at him from both sides, Hunt would have to blow the bridge to save himself: "It was going to be this spectacular image, and unfortunately it was just so unbelievably expensive and we had to jump through so many hoops to put them on that glass bridge, we ultimately put it in the file with all the other things that will show up in another [film].

So, what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Oscar nominee Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt star in Warner Bros. Pictures' and Village Roadshow Pictures' sci-fi thriller "Edge of Tomorrow," under the direction of Doug Liman. The epic action of "Edge of Tomorrow" unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Edge of Tomorrow features:
Director: Doug Liman
Tom Cruise as Lt. Col. William "Bill" Cage
Emily Blunt as Sergeant Rita Rose Vrataski
Bill Paxton as Master Sergeant Farrell
Brendan Gleeson as General Brigham
Kick Gurry as Griff
Dragomir Mrsic as Kuntz
Charlotte Riley as Nance
Jonas Armstrong as Skinner
Franz Drameh as Ford
Masayoshi Haneda as Takeda
Tony Way as Kimmel
Noah Taylor as Dr. Carter

Edge Of Tomorrow is out on Blu-ray/DVD NOW!

In all seriousness, EOT2 sounds like a decent enough idea.
MI:6 is gonna be all sorts of awesome

Edge of Tomorrow 2 sounds pretty unnecessary, tbh. But if it does come out, I hope they decide to call it, 'Edge of the Day After Tomorrow.'

The author of the original novel is writing a sequel. Might be good to at least give him a call and see what he's thinking.

Why talk to the author? He didn't the first time and look how that turned out.

Edge of Tomorrow shocked me by how good it was, despite Tom Cruise being a bit of a Twat in his personal life, he's movies including the MI movies are fantastic.
Still he was miscast for Jack Reacher.

Looking forward to him being in a CBM.

I recommend watching it.. Great flick. Im not a Tom Cruise fan but that movie was a good. Sold me on why I think Emily Blunt should play Captain Marvel in the MCU.

They didn't need to talk to him the first time because the book was already out. They could at least see what direction he has chosen to take his sequel, it'll only help in their own process by consulting the guy who created their blueprint. Also might help avoid a run of the mill sequel. I have faith in Doug Liman, not so sure I have the same faith in Cruise as a storywriter. We'll see.
