Gareth Edwards on Godzilla: "We Want to Stay True to the Fanbase"

Over at Empire Online, writer/director Gareth Edwards has revealed a little bit more regarding his new take on Godzilla.

As Edwards explains it, the moment he was first asked about helming the modern updating of Godzilla somehow seemed destined. "When I got the call from my agent," he says, "I was in my bedroom and right in front of me by my DVD player was the 1954 Godzilla. He asked, 'Are you a fan?' And I said, 'Yeah, I'm looking at him right now.' It was incredible.

"The thing that’s so interesting is that Godzilla has evolved since the original one in the ‘50s," Edwards said, "so there is the opportunity to bring it up to date. But we want to stay true to the fanbase as well and I’m a fan of the Toho films. Everyone's got a very strong opinion about Godzilla and what it should be."

We would imagine the same is true with you. Sound off below on what you think the new Godzilla should be.

as long as they follow these simple rules.

-keep the japanese design of godzilla.
-has plenty of fights with other monsters.
-shit hot cgi effects, time to move on from man in a rubber suit.

i'm sure it will be an awesome monster flick.

It should be easy to stay true to the fan base. Make them straight-to-dvd Godzilla movies. They'll be fine- all four of them.

HE BETTER BE!!!!! Godzilla better make this work. I love Godzilla, I like the Heisei era of Godzilla, where they were a tad darker in theme and had actual continuity.....Also new Godzilla comic comes out today...YAY!!!

@NeoBaggins.....the Films had theatrical releases in Japan but we got them on video because it was cheaper that way. Now with Godzilla being part of pop culture, that might change with this new movie. I'm sure there will be a huge box set of every movie.

Just asking...

Growler The remake was good- just not good as a Godzilla movie. I liked it. The babies were a bit much, but I enjoyed it.

1. godzilla destroys cities and is fought against by earthlings.

2. aliens use this opportunity to take over earth using other giant monsters and to take down the only threat which they cannot control (Godzilla)

3. and as someone said - time to move on from the rubber suit but they need to keep the original look w/ some updated modifications.

I have to say as long as it ISN'T like the Hollywood version. Just wasn't Godzilla to me. If you watch the last Godzilla movie (Final Wars) he kills the Hollywood version in about 2 secs.

Just make sure that there is a worthy villain for Godzilla to fight. That will make the movie worthwhile.

Marvel72: if those simple rules are followed, this new film will be greatness! I love the old films with the rubber suits, but I do agree- this is one place where CGI could really be put to good use.

I just hope that the lessons of the 1998 film are learned and not repeated. What a disappointment that was!

Just focus on Godzilla. You don't need a fight with other monster every 2 minutes. How about trying to recapture the magic if the 1954 original where the focus was the terror he wreaked on the people involved. But constant monster fights we don't need since that's been the focus of almost every other Godzilla film.

@ironpool007 -- I totally agree. If I wanted to see bad wrestling moves, I would watch WWE. I want giant radioactive lizard horror, not monster anti-hero.

You know what, keep the 50's design but you have to make it a little more modern, like a hybrid between the 50's and the '98 one. maybe somehthing like this

Good for you. I'm fine with it. The world isn't checking for Godzilla on a whole, so those who like the 98' Godzilla and those who don't might as well be in the same boat. No one cares. It's like trying to be uppity about liking the 60's Planet of the Apes and trashing the 2001 version. It's [frick]ing Godzilla.
PDC1987
PDC1987 - 3/31/2011, 2:17 PM
NeoBaggins - Stop fronting. It's not a good look and it's utterly transparent.

*Everyone* knows Godzilla. The fanbase is large, if it weren't there wouldn't be the annual G-Fest convention, constant toys from Bandai, the new comic series, the new Hollywood adaptation, etc. And obviously you're checking for him since you clicked on this article and then responded.

Yes, it's Godzilla, and that's why it matters. The fans care about the Toho vs. Sony version debate, that's more than "no one." Toho has never had $130 million to spend on making a Godzilla movie or access to any acting/film making talent possible like Sony did with the 1998 film. There was no excuse for that film to be crap, meanwhile Toho did the best they could with their resources. Not to mention the Sony film was *not* a Godzilla film. Godzilla doesn't run away from the military and die from a few missiles.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 3/31/2011, 11:51 PM
PDC1987 Frontin? Nah, it's really a meh issue. Dude said somethin slick about me and the other guy not hating the 98 film and I responded. It's not as epic as you're making it out to be. When I was little, Godzilla was the shit. But I didn't grow into one of the Zilla geeks that hit the underground video stores and load up on the latest films, that look just like the 60s films. Sue me. It's one of those properties that people just laugh at when it's brought up. But if it's good, I'll be suprised and admit it'd good if I see it. Cause that's what type a guy I AM.

Big monster movies are like disaster movies. The threat isn't as engaging as a living TALKING antagonist or protagonist for that matter. Whatever.
