Gareth Edwards On Taking Over The GODZILLA Franchise

The director of Legendary Pictures' Godzilla reboot discusses getting the creature design and special effects right, as well as taking on such a well-known franchise, how emotionally involved he is with the production, and the fans' reaction to the footage shown at Comic-Con last summer.

Speaking with Total Film (via The Geek Files), Monsters director Gareth Edwards talks about working on Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' much anticipated Godzilla reboot. He discusses taking on such a popular franchise, as well as how "emotionally involved" he is in working on the film, which is expected to be in 3D. "I've never worked this hard, this long and been this emotionally involved in something that's lasted only a few seconds since the time I lost my virginity! But the reaction has been amazing and I can't wait for the fans to see our final product.

"I've always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine 'If this really happened, what would it be like?' I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film."

Additionally, Edwards comments on the "fantastic" fan reaction to the teaser trailer shown at San Diego Comic-Con back in July and his being welcomed in Hollywood."Everyone warns you about working for Hollywood and how you can get treated in a certain way but my experience has been the polar opposite. Thomas Tull (founder of Legendary) has been very supportive."

Just the other day, we heard that Iron Man 3 co-writer Drew Pearce was hired to polish the Godzilla script to "age up" the characters in order to better match them with the actors being targeted. The script was previously worked on by David Callaham (The Expendables), David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son). Casting is expected to begin in a few weeks.

Godzilla is set to hit theaters May 16th, 2014.

I'm much more excited about Pacific Rim. Although I would like to see some of the classic kaiju from the Godzilla franchise brought back like Rodan, Anguirus, and King Ghidorah.

I like the words "age up" that to me is a good sign that the main human leads won't be 20 something douches, we don't need anymore Sam Witwicky's

Being one who saw the footage at comic con all I can say is that it was really spine chilling. I can see what he means by it being grounded. To me it really felt like the original Gojira film from the 50's. Just hearing that voice over describing the devastation caused by a nuclear bomb and seeing all the destruction was eerie as hell :)

Ok people complain about Godzilla being about the people and not the actual monster. Has anyone ever seen the original Godzilla movies they wernt just about the monster either. There would be no story if it was just about a giant lizard destroying a city.

@ajones325

Yeah, but I am sure a balance can be found somewhere in between where it isn't almost exclusively about the humans and their past relationships or some bullshit.

@ caveman - I couldn't have said it better myself. Not EVERYTHING has to be Batman Begins. In fact, sometimes it's okay for a movie NOT to be grounded in reality. But regardless I'm excited for this one. Been waiting for a new take on Godzilla for a while. By the time it comes out it'll have been 10 years since the last Japanese flick.

I hope they tackle the tragic aspect behind Godzilla's origin (US bombs Japan with nukes, nukes create Godzilla, US, in a way, creates Godzilla) I really wanna see that ironic moment when we realize that its our own fault Godzilla just trashed the Statue of Liberty. (Gotta love irony)
