James Cameron Plans To Begin Production On AVATAR Sequels Next Year

Avatar director James Cameron has offered an update on his planned sequels, saying that he's looking to finish the scripts by February and that filming should kick off by the end of 2013.

Last we heard on James Cameron's planned sequels to his 2009 sci-fi epic Avatar, it was said that the first follow-up would be targeting a 2015 release (after producer Jon Landau ruled out the previously suggested 2014 debut). Cameron has been working on the scripts for the sequels ever since the first film became the highest grossing movie of all time. Now, speaking with The West Australian at the premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey last night, the director reveals that he plans on finishing writing his scripts by February next year, and production would commence at the end of 2013. That would help bring the first sequel on course for a 2015 release. "I want to get these scripts nailed down, I don't want to be writing the movie in post production," Cameron said. "We kind of did that on the first picture, I ended up cutting out a lot of scenes and so on and I don't want to do that again." He also reveals that, if the groundbreaking 48 frames per second format is widely accepted for The Hobbit, then it'll "pave the way" for the Avatar sequels to use the format.

I thought they ere filming in 60FPS. That would be even cooler to see. Smoother motion and no pulldown on TVs.

Yes more sequels he'll be wasting his career with. The last one was good not great but the special effects were beyond awesome.

regardless of if you think the movie is even worth a sequel, I just want to see him be more prolific and do different stories - BETTER stories - with the incredible technology

It took him 14 years to come up with a completely unoriginal story, so I guess it was the technology/visual aspect that took so long. Let's see if they can come up with a half-way original story for the sequel in less time, because I certainly won't go watch again just for the visual aspect.

I enjoyed the first movie but, that's it. It should just stay as a stand alone movie. I don't think a sequel is necessary. It was over hyped. It did a couple of things that helped the film industry but still, a sequel is not necessary.

Alright, I can't be alone in this, but does anyone else think Avatar was beaten by its own hype? It was built up to be this life altering sci-fi event, but what we got was a hamfisted eco-story with awesome special effects; nothing more.

Personally I could give two shits about seeing the story advance, I wasn't captivated by the first one enough to care. Sure it was a beautiful film, but it really didn't do much for me. Move on Cam.

let's get real here, this will make tons of money. the visual effects will be spectacular. and the characters and themes will be as bland and cliche as before.

Now this is a movie that totally deserves the backlash. It wasn't anything special or original AT ALL. I saw it in 3D and wasn't impressed, the only reason I've watched any 3D since is because I had to for the midnite screenings at my local theater. And as far as the effects everyone is fawning over, they really weren't "photo-realistic" to me, as Cameron kept claiming. The Na'vi looked like cartoons ffs. Totally could've been video game cinema. I go to movies to get into the story first and foremost, not the effects. And that's ALL Avatar had going for it and everyone just ate it up.

So, yes, this IS the most over-rated movie of all time and anyone with a brain knows that. But there's a lot of dummies out there, so there ya go :)

Oh James Cameron, what the hell happened to you. You used to make awesome movies, but then your Titanic obsession and money ruined everything. smh
