J.J. Abrams is Horrified!

When you consider all that he's accomplished in his career already, and the subject matter he's dealt with, one would imagine that it takes a lot to frighten J.J. Abrams. Well, Mr. Abrams is, as he says, "horrified beyond belief."

The source of this terror? The fact that Fox is moving Fringe to Friday nights beginning next week, which, with the exception of The X-Files back in the '90s, hasn't exactly been a safe haven for genre, the highway to that particular night littered with the corpses of such shows.

"As a fan of the genre and the show," offers Abrams while attending the TCA press tour, "I'm hoping that fans will tune in. I certainly can promise that it will be worth their while. The episodes that are coming up are spectacular. I guess you can just be hopeful and say that, if the work is good enough, it will find the audience. I think they’re doing better work now, even in the second half of Season three, than they’ve ever done on the series. I’m just crossing my fingers that fans of the show, show up.

"I don’t see an upside [to the move]," he adds, "because the audience on Friday nights is harder to find. But, that’s not to say that they aren’t there and that we might not be able to make it there. Certainly, I would be lying to you if I said I’m thrilled about the move. But, what I am thrilled about is that the network has been incredibly supportive and, despite its move to Friday, they’ve been nothing but encouraging of the show. It’s still on the air in its third season, and it’s not easy to do that. It’s not easy to get to Season 3 of anything. They’ve allowed the show to become truly great, I think. The question is, will audiences find a great show on Friday nights? I pray that they do."

There are elements of the show that I find pretty weak -- such as Anna Torv's dry acting -- but damn, would I miss Walter. One of the best characters on a sci fi show in the history of television.

Why is moving a show to Friday such a bad thing?
Hellebus
Hellebus - 1/13/2011, 7:54 PM
@Indoraptor12 aka "Guy who never leaves Mom's basement"

Because people go out and do stuff on Fridays. Movies, clubbing, bar hopping, etc. This causes a drop in viewer count and thereby, less impact on the show's success.

Hellebus

people don't really go "clubbing" do they? I always thought that was a myth.

@indoraptor12, Despite his unneccesarilly rude response, Hellebus is right. People are often doing other things on Friday nights making it difficult for Friday night shows to find an audience. There's a history of shows being cancelled after a move to Friday nights. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles for example. It's a less than ideal situation to say the least.

I enjoy Fringe, but never see it at its scheduled time . . . that's what DVRs are for. The move won't effect me, but I hope it doesn't harm the show's ratings.

So this site is TMZ now? How does this have anything to do with COMIC BOOK MOVIE DOT [frick]ING COM. NOT TELEVISION SHOW DOT COM, BUT COMIC BOOK MOVIE DOT COM. C'mon. There's a time and a place.

I understand some people love J.J. Abrams and whatnot, but why is this a front page post? Fringe has absolutely nothing to do with anything pertaining to this site, except that EdGross likes him and/or Fringe. I'm not trying to [frick]ing hate on it, but why?

Most people download the episodes off the internet these days, or have dvr that records their show. This isn't a big deal at all.

Cainraw, stfu. Go cry somewhere else if you don't like it. This post is for the people who like the show obviously. Why did you take the time to come here and post something unoriginal? I see the same shit all the time on other topics that aren't directly related to comic book heroes. Get the [frick] over it. I doubt a few extra news updates on the website isn't going to hurt your computer and melt your keyboard. Unless you have dial-up and it took you an hour to get into this article to find out is wasn't about comic books then yeah, I'd be pissed too lol. But I hardly think that's the case so you can [frick] off in the nicest way possible. People like you ruin this site. It's called "fun" and "enjoyment", maybe you could try it out sometime. Try to enjoy the articles, since they are provided for us, the lazy bastards who want to be spoon fed information lol.

This goes for everyone, set a personal bar for yourself, to not be a douche. You'll feel better in general. It is possible.

Blanka1212, two separate instances, two different comments from J.J. Abrams. It doesn't mean that either is false, just that in two different contexts he offered an opposing view to what he had said earlier. In one he put on a brave face (and in which he praised the Fox executives for their support of the show, in the other he offered his concerns).

Cainraw, DC has published Fringe comic books, therefore the connection is there and the reason the show is covered -- beyond the fact that the show obviously appeals to much of the CBM fanbase.

I think Fringe is the best show that nobody watches. It's sad that hollywood feels like it has to dumb down it's movies and tv so people don't get lost, but when a show like this comes around and nobody watches it it just proves their point.

comicb00kguy - 1/14/2011, 6:32 AM
I've never watched this show, but if Fox is trying to kill it, it must be good. They have a long and despicable track record of moving good shows around on the schedule until the ratings drop enough that they have the excuse they need to cancel it. See Family Guy (Pre-adult swim), Futurama, and Arrested Development for some great examples of this. They've done this to enough shows I enjoyed that I don't even watch anything on that network anymore except for football, the Simpsons, and Family Guy. Why bother? If it's any good, it will be gone in a year or two. Worst. Network. Ever.
