It's safe to say 2020 is now pretty much a write-off when it comes to new big-screen releases, but the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is making major studios jittery about next year, too.

Following the bad news that Matt Reeves' The Batman has flown to 2022, Universal has announced that Jurassic World: Dominion will be joining it. The latest instalment in the mega-successful dino franchise has vacated its July 11, 2021 spot, and will now stomp into theatres almost a full year later on June 10, 2022.

On the plus side, we do have a new poster.

Production is still going smoothly and is just three weeks away from wrapping, but that's not the studio's primary concern. Apparently, the year-long delay is more "about safeguarding a big tentpole which has a number of lucrative ancillary attachments."

In other words, the movie's rollout has to go without a single hitch, and they're taking no bloody chances.

Jurassic World: Dominion reunites director Colin Trevorrow with stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, with original Jurassic Park trio Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum joining the carnage as Dr. Ellie Sattler, Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ian Malcolm.

@dracula - I try to pretend 3 didn't happen. They used enough of Lost World to get where they needed to go, but neither the the book or the movie were up to snuff. I'm sure the studio interference pissed him off proper. To be fair, it wasn't a very strong book though IMO and is a good example of why he was ill equipped and never intended to write a book series, much less a sequel.

Movie studios mindset: "Push our movies back so more people can see them"

Reality: No one will see them if they keep pushing them back, because theaters will be gone by then. So it'll just be strictly DVD and streaming.

@Polaris - Not unless they get the Paramount SCOTUS decision reversed and that ain't happening anytime soon. Besides the studios, if they are smart, will stay the hell away.

Somebody is going to bring up the Paramount consent decree so let me go ahead and deal with that. Doing away with the consent decree if that indeed happens, still does not allow studios to own theaters beyond a very small number. The consent decree deals with certain business practices not theater ownership.

2021 is now 2020 for movies and 2021 is now 2022

Which sucks even more so because the slate of movies for 2020 honestly wasn’t great save for a couple

@ThorArms - When 2020 began I was only looking forward to Tenet, No Time to Die, and Dune and two of those moved to 2021. Honestly, the 2021 looks more promising than this year. Let's just hope we can actually see these movies.

Even when the pandemic ends, it's still going a few years for Hollywood to recover from the massive blow they suffered this year.

I see some people online who are happy to see Hollywood struggle because they dislike the whole woke culture. Sure, there are snobby elitists in the industry but there are also thousands of people working in this industry who are out of work. Who knows how many will be able to go back to work? When you see a movie, you are supporting the artists, designers, technicians, etc. who put in countless hours to give you top notch entertainment. I can't help but have sympathy for them.

Anyone getting the feeling Hollywood is anticipating reduced seating capacity remaining in place for a long long time ? Cause if that's the case what you get is fewer* blockbusters butting heads than it was looking like yesterday and far fewer smaller films.

*blockbusters on 2-3+ times the normal # of screens which after the second one limits offerings severely.

The Camp Cretaceous cartoon was better than the last movie. Fans of Jurassic Park should check it out with their kids.
