GODZILLA MINUS ONE And GODZILLA x KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE Directors Share Candid Thoughts On Each Other's Movies

Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki and Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard have offered their takes on each other's kaiju movies, and we think you'll be surprised by what they had to say.

In recent years, the MonsterVerse has become increasingly over-the-top, transforming into a world that's a far cry from what we saw when Gareth Edwards relaunched the Godzilla franchise with a grounded tone in 2014.

Under Adam Wingard's watch, that crazy new tone was taken to the next level with the utterly bonkers Godzilla vs. Kong

The filmmaker plans to up the ante in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, but in the wake of the critically acclaimed Godzilla Minus One, it's clear there are very different ways to adapt these iconic kaiju on screen.

Empire (via SFFGazette.com) recently caught up with Takashi Yamazaki to get his thoughts on the Americanisation of the Godzilla franchise under Warner Bros.' watch. However, rather than slating the MonsterVerse, the Godzilla Minus One helmer expressed an appreciation for what that franchise has added to Toho lore.

"Hollywood interpretation of Godzilla is a very interesting use of the IP," Yamazaki tells the site. "It can endure and survive many different interpretations. To me, it's a more fun version of what Godzilla can be - the classic Toho version did explore something like that at one point in its history."

"Within that genre, I think they do a good job of [balancing] what the humans do, versus what the kaiju are doing."

The publication also spoke with Wingard and was keen to get his take on Godzilla Minus One. Despite being an epic adventure for the King of Monsters, it's a very different approach to the Titan which The New Empire helmer admits to being blown away by.

"It was fantastic. It's one of the best Godzilla movies I've ever seen," Wingard states. "Their take on Godzilla is so different than mine. I'm following the later '60s, 70s Showa pattern, where Godzilla is the hero character."

"In Minus One, Godzilla reacts in a way that's metaphorical to what the characters are going through. It's such a different movie than ours tonally. You're getting more Godzilla now than ever, but you're seeing all sides of him. It's really super-cool."

It's always fun to hear from filmmakers who have delivered such different takes on the same characters and great to see such mutual respect. In case you missed it, you can relive the epic new trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire below.

The epic battle continues!  Legendary Pictures' cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of 'Godzilla vs. Kong' with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire rampages into theaters on March 29.

Monsterverse has been disappointing how utterly ridiculous it has become. G14 was perfect tone.

@JobinJ - I agree. G:2014 did have the preferable tone that was grounded, dark and (broadly speaking) realistic. But Gareth Edwards played it a little TOO close to the vest with the lack of screen-time with the Big-G himself. The introduction of elaborate James Bond-like secret bases (G: KING OF THE MONSTERS) and then, the rainbow/neon GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY type of technology (for GvK) may have roots from the cartoony, cheesy and low-budgeted 70s SHOWA era but, that doesn't justify a modern-day, $200+ million dollar version of those same cartoony and low-budged films IMO. 🤨 Godzilla:MINUS ONE stayed with me after viewing it. The Legendary series on the other hand is easily forgettable and disposable popcorn type of entertainment.

@SuperiorHeckler - fully agree. In watching King of the Monsters, I kept asking myself how the hell were these giant secret bases built without no one knowing about it? It was just ridiculous. And the gigantic flying aircraft that could land on no runway ever in the world. Just crazy.

Then, giving Kong an ax was stupid as hell. They’ve made King Kong basically a giant caveman that is a human with its intelligence.

@JobinJ - Despite a few flaws, I think G14 remains my favourite in this universe, followed by Skull Island, then King of the Monsters. They basically got worse with each movie, and the Monarch isn't doing much for me either.

If we got just a tad bit more action in the first half of G14 and if the final battle was a bit more clearer to see, it would be waaay better. And while we're on the subject, I prefer the G14 Godzilla design as well.

@Fares - agree on all. Design was perfection. This current goofiness is ruining the franchise.

@JobinJ - I wouldn't mind it if the universe was goofy from the start. I like me goofy Godzilla and I like me serious Godzilla, but the change of tone after G14 was jarring. I just accept it at this point, it's easier to enjoy the movies when you know what you're getting into. It is what it is.

This is all you need to know:

GxK: NEW EMPIRE = Joel Schumacher's BATMAN & ROBIN
G:MINUS ONE = Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT

Not to be a dick, but why should we be surprised that the directors of Godzilla movies are aware of the character's history and know which iteration of the characters each other is referencing? 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 -

And we can have both! Which is the amazing thing !

You can’t say that of every franchise unfortunately, expect maybe Batman who has gone through all the iterations lol

To me this is a win win for the studios and fans, because the movies make money and the fans can have their pick on what kind of Kaiju movie they want to see.
