Godzilla x Kong: Supernova Leak Reveals First Look At MonsterVerse's SpaceGodzilla Redesign

A leaked Godzilla x Kong: Supernova action figure has revealed a first look at SpaceGodzilla's terrifying redesign, and it appears filmmaker Grant Sputore is sticking close to the classic version.

Over the weekend, leaked merchandise revealed a first look at Godzilla Minus Zero's King Ghidorah, and we're now heading to the MonsterVerse for a sneak peek at Godzilla x Kong: Supernova's SpaceGodzilla (via SFFGazette.com).

It's clearly a prototype or unfinished toy, but it's detailed enough to give us an idea of how formidable the iconic monster will be in the upcoming sequel. Those spikes are terrifying, and Godzilla and King Kong may well have met their match in this behemoth.

SpaceGodzilla was the main antagonist in the 1994 Toho film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. A mutated clone of Godzilla, the Kaiju formed when Godzilla's cells—carried into space by either Mothra or remnants from Biollante—were sucked into a black hole, fused with crystalline extraterrestrial organisms, and emerged mutated.

SpaceGodzilla typically resembles Godzilla but features large crystalline spikes on its shoulders and back (replacing dorsal fins), a reddish-purple abdominal area, tusks, and a high-pitched roar. Many of those iconic features can be found on this action figure.

Word from test screenings is that neither Mothra nor Rodan are set to appear in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Surprisingly, there will also be no rematch for the movie's titular Kaiju frenemies. Tonally, it sounds like we can expect the MonsterVerse to get a little more serious again after some campier efforts from Adam Wingard.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has proven that the franchise can still take itself seriously, and it will be interesting to learn how this blockbuster balances that more serious tone with the epic action fans are hoping for. For many Kaiju lovers, Godzilla Minus One is a very tough act to follow, and the same will likely be said of Godzilla Minus Zero after it opens later this month.

At the China Licensing Expo this past April, an early plot synopsis for the movie revealed, "As the sixth instalment in the 'MonsterVerse' film series, this movie will delve deeper into the delicate relationship of coexistence and trust between humans and prehistoric behemoths."

"Meanwhile, the earth-shaking monster storm triggered by the epic clash between Godzilla and Kong," it continued, "the two guardians of Earth’s ecological balance, will once again sweep across the big screen!"

Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) directs Godzilla x Kong: Supernova from a script by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer Dave Callaham. The cast includes Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Sam Neill, and Dan Stevens, who reprises his role as veterinarian Trapper Beasley from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova arrives in theaters on March 26, 2027.

I don't know about that! The first few Godzilla / Kong films leaned toward a more grounded approach. Now it's veering toward James Gunn goofiness and comic book fantasy. It is going down the drain fast.

@ArthurFuchsache - Well he really is the poster child for modern goofiness in cinema, so as a reference for that you can’t really pick a better name 😅

@EscapeMySight - No he really isn't.

People here are just obsessed with him. To a level that comes across like that one kid at school who bullies their crush because they like them, but don't want anyone else to know.

Super gay.

@EscapeMySight - Taika Waititi I could understand, as me actually makes awful and goofy films.

James Gunn makes middle of the road nothing burgers not even worth bothering with talking about.

Definitely seems to be a prototype of an unfinished toy but the crystalline spikes look accurately faithful.

@NinnesMBC -
I think if they wanted more accuracy the spikes should be on the shoulders, but I'm guessing they found that more difficult to animate during fight scenes as it could limit the angles his arms could move to if the crystals angled also so shifted them to the back. I'm kind of expecting them to do a Batman Vs Superman situation where his body evolves during the fights, growing more crystals.

Thank goodness if they are indeed aiming to make the movie a touch more serious after the Wingard movies. About darn time. No doubt the reception to Godzilla Minus One gave the studio a a good shaking.
