Zak Penn Reveals That PACIFIC RIM 2 Will Focus On 'Kaiju Origins'

News on the sequel to 2013's Pacific Rim has been relatively light, but during a recent interview, Zak Penn did talk about the scriptwriting process. While he couldn't give too many details

For a while there, it seemed like a sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim was a shaky proposition, but the director confirmed that a second film in the franchise is indeed underway a few months back. We haven't heard much about the movie since, but screenwriter Zak Penn has now provided a couple extra details in a recent interview, where he elaborated on where the script is at this point, and that a major focus of the movie will be elaborating on the world built in the first film, and where the gargantuan Kaiju originally hail from.

"It’s going well," said Penn. "Guillermo and I have been passing the script back and forth and right now it’s in his hands." When pressed for further details on what the story would entail, he responded by saying: "But honestly, I don’t think I could tell you anything that Guillermo hasn’t already said. Obviously as you can imagine, there’s going to be a lot more about the Kaiju and their origins, and the world will be in a very different state when we get to this movie. He and Travis created this enormous universe that’s pretty much like multiple movies smashed into one. So with Pacific Rim, you could just assume that all the specific tropes of the movie, like the giant robots and the giant monsters and all the technology around it, is going to be explored in more depth. That’s just where we’re going."

Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled for release on April 7th, 2017.

the hate that this movie gets.......so unreasonable. If you ask me, Pacific Rim is a real fun movie.

A movie that tells you it's having fun, and just won't shut up about it, is not a fun movie.

Pacific Rim did none of those things; the monsters were cool, the robots were cool, every single character had charisma and so much [frick]ing character (especially Ron Perlman), the fights were tasteful, every bit of design (character, set, prop) was colorful, the story was rounded, the music was original, and none of the acting was lacking. We need more fun movies like Pacific Rim.

That being said, can't [frick]ing wait for the sequel because I want to know what is up with the Kaiju.

@MarkyMarkRises Dammit man, did you not see that editorial that instructed us never to use the word "fun" to describe a movie?!?

I still mourn for the gloriously trippy Hobbit movies we could've gotten with Del Toro =(

I enjoyed Pacific Rim a lot. Its not a movie I watch for ground breaking story. To me, I watched it for its fun special effects and I'm sorry, but what crazy person can hate on Giant Robots fighting Giant Alien/extra-dimensional/Monsters? You would have to have no soul in order to not like that!
