Despite being an adaptation of the video games, it has previously been stated that Mass Effect will have an entirely original story, rather than adapting a storyline from one of the games.

I think for the Mass Effect live action film cinema merchandising, they should do red green and blue, popcorn buckets, drinks and ice-cream packets, all in different sizes and with various different product descriptions.... and then when customers buy them they find out they are all the bloody same.

I know they're gonna go with default Broshep and my personal choice would be Logan Marshall Green but as a Femshep player, my pick for her would be Stana Katic.

may I ask...WHY? WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY? the story is alredy there,why come up with something different to the source material the fans know? I've never played Mass Effect (I would love to,thou),but still,that's stupid.

look at Resident Evil: tons of characters to use,the story was already there,and what do they do? create a new character and something completelly different to the games (the good ones at least).

I'm happy they are creating an original story within the Mass Effect universe. There are too many variables to be able to adapt the story of the trilogy into film(s) properly.

The first game was difficult for me.. I found myself straying off into planets and driving Thier rovers trying to look for something.. I was lost

Hmmm I don't know, maybe it's for the better, having an original story.

Despite being extremely cinematic, and watching a movie more than playing a game, the first game in particular has a lot of things that just wouldn't make sense in a 2 hour movie.

First of all, Shepard traveling all through the Traverse not to find Saren, but to find what Saren is looking for. Sounds good, but consider how it would be executed.
*You take the Normandy to Therum to save Saren's partner's daughter from getting killed by the Geth. Okay, but after that, Liara doesn't do anything more but mind-meld with Shepard to help her (yes, her) understand the Prothean beacon visions. Sure she gets better in the next games, but ideally, she'd be dead weight in a movie.

*You go to Feros next and find a human colony on the wrong side of the Geth, and they aren't too eager to help you out. You dig through the colony's sponsors headquarters miles away to discover an indigenous lifeform is controlling everyone's minds. Saren wanted the Prothean "cipher" from the Thorian to understand the beacons, but also wanted to study the effects of mind control for personal reasons.

*You travel to Noveria to see what Liara's mother is up to, only to work your way around the red tape hindering your investigation. All the clues take you to an over-run lab on a frosty mountain peak, where scientists have unearthed the queen egg of a telepathic insect-like species previously thought to have been hunted to extinction over a thousand years ago. Benezia mind-raped her to extract the coordinates to the lost Mu Relay, where the "conduit" lies.

*The council sends you to Virmire, where a covert Salarian team has spotted Saren. Upon rendezvousing with the Salarians, you discover Saren has found a way to cure a sterility plague that a species of the galaxy's toughest, most aggressive warriors have been suffering from. Beneath that, you uncover another beacon, completing the set of coordinates to the Mu Relay. You also discover that Saren is being controlled by a sentient machine race - the Reapers, who have taken it upon themselves to exterminate nearly all life in the galaxy every 50,000 years. Your team plants a nuclear bomb at the facility and you confront Saren, who reasons that because the Reapers didn't wipe out all life, he could save lives by proving their use as slaves. Shepard and Saren go their separate ways and escape the blast, but one of Shepard's friends is killed in action.

That's pretty convoluted already, and you would have to make a lot of omissions just to preserve the basic idea of the story.

I mean why are the Rachni important? Because they were an enemy that the galaxy needed the Krogans to fight. Why are the Krogans important? Because after hunting the Rachni to extinction, they began to overpopulate the galaxy in a savage conquest. Why is the genophage important? Because it shows the "reward" the galaxy offered the Krogan for their salvation - all but dooming their own race to extinction.

Then there's the Quarians and the Geth. The Quarians created the Geth as a labor force ("Geth" means "servant" in Quarian), and then the Geth evolved into an artificial intelligence, occupying thousands of platforms. When the Geth demonstrated their intelligence, the Quarian government deemed it necessary to terminate them as a preemptive strike to prevent a full-scale war/rebellion. They failed, and the Geth drove the Quarians off their own homeworld to travel the stars as exiles, unable to settle planets due to Rannoch's unique lack of disease. Because their immune systems haven't had a challenge, Quarians must seal themselves off in environment suits to prevent any infection that could prove fatal.

How would you explain that in the movie?

@MisterNiceGuy You're an idiot. That picture of Shepard was from 2007, way before TDKR. Also, he doesn't really have facial hair. And lastly, when does a character having facial hair become a ripoff of Chris Nolan? Hate to break it to you, but facial hair has been around a lot longer than The Dark Knight Rises and Chris Nolan

@Tainted87 : that is EXACTLY why the format would work as a TV series! The beauty of the games is the sense of adventure (the first one, which was an RPG), and you simple can't capture all of that cinematic weight in a finite, 2 hour movie.

Still though, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 can be covered into Seasons 2 and 3 the easiest, it's the first one that has a lot going on.

Huh. Well, I wouldn't want to adapt it. But I suppose that's why I'm not a Hollywood scriptwriter. Best of luck, should've gone with femshep.

But seriously, where's that Michael Fassbender/Assassin's Creed story going? If there's finally a "good" video game film in the works, that looks like the best bet right now...

One of my favorite game series, but I'm not interested in a supposed Mass Effect movie with an "entirely original story". It sounds like another Resident Evil movie "adaptation" that is a total embarrassment to the original RE games. [frick] Hollywood and it's "brilliant" ideas.
