THE MATRIX 4 Star Neil Patrick Harris Explains Why It Didn't Feel Like They Were Shooting A Blockbuster

The Matrix 4 is set to be released on December 22nd, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max. We've yet to see a trailer for the highly anticipated sequel, but there are plenty of reasons to be excited, especially as the cast includes names like Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, and Neil Patrick Harris.

When it comes to the new cast members, we don't know who any of them are playing, and Harris didn't share any plot details during a recent interview with Variety.

He did, however, explain why working on The Matrix 4 didn't feel like shooting a traditional blockbuster.

"It didn’t feel large because it felt like she was in her sweet spot, which was filming on the fly, filming using natural light. Sometimes you’d sit around for an hour waiting for the clouds to clear, and then you’d quickly film," the How I Met Your Mother alum explained. "You’d film pages at a time in 30 minutes and then be done. You would think that a giant movie would be 100% storyboarded, animatics, and we’d be checking off shots."

"I think she lived that before three times over, and I would suspect that she wants to do things her own way now," Harris added. "It wasn’t often that you felt that you were doing something gigantic because she made it feel very intimate."

We know those early movies were heavy on visual effects, so with the way technology has advanced, you'd expect director Lana Wachowski to have embraced green screens and the like for The Matrix 4. Instead, it sounds like she's taken a back to basics approach for this sequel, and that could definitely be a beneficial decision for the franchise. We'll have to wait and see.
