Universal Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced that the Peter Jackson-produced Mortal Engines will arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on March 12.

The poorly received post-apocalyptic adventure was one of 2018's biggest bombs, with some reports claiming its poor theatrical performance, which saw it earn $80 million ($15.9M domestic; $64.1M foreign) on an estimated $100 million production budget, may have resulted in a $100 million loss for the studios involved, essentially silencing hopes for a potential new franchise.

Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.

Mortal Engines is the startling, new epic adventure directed by Oscar®-winning visual-effects artist Christian Rivers (King Kong). Joining Rivers are The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies three-time Academy Award®-winning filmmakers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who have penned the screenplay. The Universal and MRC adaptation is from the award-winning book series by Philip Reeve, published in 2001 by Scholastic.

The 4K release will feature Dolby Vision HDR, a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, and supplements on both releases will include:
  • Audio Commentary by Director Christian Rivers
  • Welcome to London - Featurette
  • End of the Ancients - Featurette
  • Character Series - Featurette
  • In the Air - Featurette
  • Film New Zealand - Featurette

Hundreds of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, a mysterious young woman, Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar), emerges as the only one who can stop London — now a giant, predator city on wheels — from devouring everything in its path. Feral, and fiercely driven by the memory of her mother, Hester joins forces with Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), an outcast from London, along with Anna Fang (Jihae), a dangerous outlaw with a bounty on her head.

Mortal Engines features:
Director: Christian Rivers

Damn, it only made 80 million WW!?! Wow, I knew it was a bomb but didn't realize that bad. I bet the loss was higher than 100 million, especially using the "double the budget to include marketing" rule of thumb.

I think people in general are just tired of these CGI fetish Peter Jackson films.

@HeavyMetal4Life - The "Double the budget for marketing" rule is completely false and basically an internet myth. It gets close to being true if you are talking about indie films, but you are forgetting that studios don't pay entirely for their marketing for big budget films due to cross promotional advertising, product placement, merchandising revenue, and more that are never counted into gross as it's often money made prior to the films release.

Taking HALF the budget and adding it will get you closer to a reasonable estimate, but even that's dubious at best.

@ElJefe

I’ve heard people have liked it - as a fan of Split and a huge fan of Unbreakable - the movie is terrible. McAvoy and Anya Taylor Joy are the only redeemables for me.

This is a huge step backwards for him. His writing is awfulllllll.

I saw this while I was on the AMC A List program.
Oof. It was pretty bad.
The only think I enjoyed was Stephen Lang as a creature called Shrike. The movie kind of came alive was he was in it.
He should’ve been the main villain.

This one just came and went at my theater. It looked interesting but I really had no desire to see it. I'll catch it on TV.
Off topic: I finally saw Dragon Ball Super: Broly today. Loved it! I was lucky to get one of the last seats at the 12:30 screening.
