JESSICA JONES And SUPERNATURAL Writer To Serve As Showrunner On Netflix's POWER RANGERS TV Series

Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) has revealed that Jenny Klein has signed an overall deal for television content with Entertainment One that will see her develop a number of projects, including the Power Rangers series currently in the works for Netflix.

Jonathan Entwistle is overseeing the property under a deal he signed with eOne back in 2020, so the expectation is that he and Klein will work closely together.

"Building this partnership with Jenny, whose talent and passion transcends genres, is an exciting moment for us. We believe that her distinctive vision makes her the perfect fit to help us develop Hasbro’s deep library of IP, as well as original projects, and we’re thrilled to have her on board," Gabe Marano, EVP, Scripted Television, US, eOne, said in a statement today.

"eOne is an impressively versatile home to develop original content, and with its incredible toy box to dig into, it’s such an exciting place to be," Klein added. "I couldn’t feel prouder to bring its beloved IP to viewers."

After the recent unsuccessful big screen reboot, Power Rangers fans are optimistic that the franchise can find new life on Netflix. The streamer's plan looks set to encompass not only this show, but movies and kids' programming, so eOne is clearly going all in with its efforts to tap into the immense popularity of this property.

Klein co-created, executive produced, and served as showrunner on hit NBC series The Thing About Pam, while her past writing and producing credits include the likes of The Witcher, Cloak and Dagger, Jessica Jones, and Supernatural. So, she should be a fantastic fit to put a fresh spin on Power Rangers and certainly has more than enough geek cred behind her.

It feels like this show is probably still a long way off, but Klein boarding as showrunner hopefully means we're getting some concrete updates sooner rather than later.

Are you excited for more Power Rangers on TV?

Well, they have a great person at the helm of it so definitely a bit excited.

Although, I actually enjoyed the last movie a lot more than I thought I would so it's a bummer we won't see a continuation.

Power Rangers reboot with some Stranger Things vibes would be perfect

@CaptainDC - I hope so, I'm good on Saban's Power Rangers. I still remember what he did to DBZ when I was a kid. Mega cringe.

Cool. I thought Cloak and Dagger was decent.

@JFerguson - It didn't deserve to end that soon, wished it received a 3rd and final-ish Season just like the Runaways did.

@dracula - It's going to be a brand new team and characters.

@dracula - Its going to be MMPR only Dinosaurs and Ninja shows have done well historically for the show lol. Power Ranger in Space and Time were good too but they aren't the most popular.

I just hope with the shows they go back to using Martial Arts rather than your MMA/UFC/Military Combat Arts that everyone in Hollywood is using. I like the cheesy poses and wire kung fu of the old power rangers. Just seeing a yellow ranger do jackie chan's drunken fist is awesome

@mastakilla39 - should have used those suits, they look too good to not be used

hopefully they find a good middle ground between the classic spandex and the over designed iron man armor of the last movie, maybe something similar to the tron legacy outfits

I haven't seen the recent movie, but I gather the last reboot made the rangers out to be angsty teens with a bunch of heightened drama (and even basically delinquents and misfits?).

Maybe I'm just getting old and boring, but I'm finding that I like to watch TV shows about characters that are more sincere and well-adjusted, where the conflict comes from the dehumanizing pressures of society and traditional cultural structures.

I guess what I'm saying is, I think I'd like to see how a group of Gen-Z Rangers conceptualize their duty to save Angel Grove from a giant monster. If it's just about preventing property damage: I don't give a shit. If it's just about avoiding mortal peril: that's the bare minimum of what the premise requires, but it's not saying anything interesting.

But if it's about exploring the virtues of the society they're protecting, addressing the inherent critique of that society by Rita Repulsa or whoever, and saying something worthwhile to justify that society (if it represents our own) or meaningfully reform it, then I'm actually interested. But that's actually the hard stuff to write well.

When I look back at the Angel Grove Youth Center, it feels like a constructed society similar to the Star Trek Federation: where the currency of the society is exemplified by engagement, service, and excellence. Basically a society where everyone is welcomed and encouraged to improve on themselves. Even those who reject that ethos (Bulk and Skull) are tolerated (though perhaps only so they can be routinely humiliated). I'm not saying this is a perfect premise, just that the Youth Center operated as the stakes of the Power Ranger show. That community and its values are what the Power Rangers were really protecting (and overall they were pretty good values, though not without issues).

@Spock0Clock - “…characters that are more sincere and well-adjusted, where the conflict comes from the dehumanizing pressures of society and traditional cultural structures.”

“I think I'd like to see how a group of Gen-Z Rangers conceptualize their duty to save Angel Grove from a giant monster.”

Reading this and the rest of your take made me think of Veronica Mars. Angel Grove can be like Neptune, CA, also technically fictional, as real a place as has ever been portrayed on television. Its particular problems and reputation informed everything from law enforcement to the biker gangs riding through on their way up and down through town. The levels of privilege/lack thereof were so nuanced and specific. There was realistic class conflict and the show and it’s characters navigated that in a truthful way.

Hopefully this power rangers show can do the same. I think there’s a great opportunity to have a show about Gen Z-ers put in a position of power to really gestate what to do with it and how it will impact their little town.

Let's just not make this a reboot but a high budget new version. If any series is tailor made for newer and newer iterations it's this.
I don't want a recast Tommy Oliver

Why does this article read like it's never heard of the fact that some iteration of Power Rangers has been an ongoing, live action TV series for some 30 odd years? Granted, I don't watch it, but hasn't there been a new live action Power Rangers season every year or so? Has that stopped?

For that matter, Power Rangers has only ever been live action. Why make that distinction in the lede?

Everyone hoping for an adaptation or inspiration from Boom Studios comics, this show is going to be a brand new team and characters. It won't be the Mighty Morphin' team, or any other team we've seen.
