Thasnagar: Matt Damon Suits Up In First Look Set Photos From The Daniels' Power Rangers-Inspired Sci-Fi Film

It's morphin' time! Well... at least it looks like it!

Following an earlier report claiming The Daniels' next film might be loosely inspired by Power Rangers, the first batch of set photos from the mysterious sci-fi feature—rumored to be titled Thasnagar—have surfaced online. They reveal the film's Academy Award-winning leading man Matt Damon (The Odyssey, Jason Bourne) suited up as what appears to be the Red Ranger!?

TMZ broke the exclusive set photos (viewable at the link below), showcasing Damon's unique red suit. We also catch early glimpses of co-stars Sandra Oh and Charles Melton. Oh appears to be playing an ally, while Melton is suited up in blue as a member of Damon's super-powered squad.

In a recent newsletter, insider Jeff Sneider shared the first plot details: "From what I hear, it’s basically a Power Rangers movie… without the name. It follows a young cast in color-coded costumes who team up to fight kaiju with the help of a superhero-esque character played by Damon, who has a Jarvis-like AI assistant played (not just voiced) by [Sandra] Oh. The wholly original movie has no official connection to Power Rangers, but I’m told it’s a pretty clear influence and that comparisons will definitely be made."

Other reports have described the project as a "superhero tentpole with global warming as the villain" that tells an original story with unique characters and no official tie to the dormant Power Rangers franchise. Still, the visual homage is undeniable. The narrative will reportedly jump between two timelines—the 1980s and the present day—with the '80s storyline following five young heroes.

In addition to Damon, the cast features Sandra Oh (Invincible; Killing Eve) alongside five rising stars: Sean Kaufman (The Summer I Turned Pretty; FBI: Most Wanted), Silvia Dionicio (Task; Chicago P.D.), Jackson Kelly (Imperfect Women; The Pitt), Kerrice Brooks (My Old Ass; The Stealthiles), and Thalia Dudek (Better Man; F1). Rounding out the supporting cast are John Leguizamo (John Wick; The Odyssey), Charles Melton (May December; Riverdale), Michael Gandolfini (Daredevil: Born Again; The Many Saints of Newark), and PinkPantheress.

While an official title hasn't been announced, the current working title is the aforementioned Thasnagar. While presumably just a placeholder, the suffix "-nagar" translates to "city" or "town" in Sanskrit and Hindi, hinting that it could be the name of the film's sci-fi setting, although it's unclear at this stage in time.

The Daniels—the directing duo composed of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert—are best known for helming Everything Everywhere All at Once, which won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

Damon has previously teased the wild tone of the film, describing the pitch as "The Breakfast Club meets Inception meets an anime film meets an episode of The John Oliver Show that didn’t get aired." It marks his next major project following Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which is now the highest-grossing film of Damon's career at $1.368 billion worldwide and has him positioned as a frontrunner for the Best Actor Oscar.

Thasnagar is slated to hit theaters on November 19, 2027!

It’s definitely got a Power Rangers vibe but Damon’s outfit gives more “Gatchaman” to me…

I’m interested to see how Damon does in this given the original choice was Ryan Gosling who couldn’t do the film but I feel would have been a better match for The Daniel’s sensibilities so we’ll see.

Anyway with The Daniels at the helm , it’s gonna be absurd as it seems but with heart aswell which I’m looking forward to since I was a fan of Everything Everywhere All At Once!!.
