REBEL MOON Director Zack Snyder Reveals How His Extended Cuts Are Completely Different Movies

Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder has revealed just how much the three-hour extended cuts of A Child of Fire and The Scargiver will differ from the versions already streaming on Netflix. Check it out...

Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver is now streaming on Netflix, but it hit the platform with overwhelmingly negative reviews. A 14% score makes it Zack Snyder's worst-reviewed movie to date, though its predecessor - Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire - didn't fare much better at 21%.

Many fans hope this summer's director's cuts (which are expected to clock in at over three hours each) improve on the current versions and perhaps deliver Snyder's true vision for his sci-fi franchise...yes, it's Justice League all over again.

"Tonally, they’re completely different. They're each an hour longer," the filmmaker tells Entertainment Weekly (via SFFGazette.com). "They’re three hours each, and there are tons of scenes that aren’t in the initial versions. We went so far into the weeds with it to the point that even within the body of the movie, a line that was the same in PG-13 as it is in R might be a different take of the same line."

"Emotionally, it's more like a parallel universe than an extended version. Things happen that in the R-rated version that don't happen in the PG-13. The event order is all different, so it's really an interesting exercise."

Snyder would even go so far as to say, "We definitely made four separate movies. There’s no doubt about that."

It's surprising to hear just how different these lengthier versions of Rebel Moon will be, but if he really did make four different movies, the budget must have spiralled out of control. Given the tepid response to the first cuts, it's surely now only going to be hardcore fans of the director who tune in...which likely isn't the result Netflix wants.

Whether that level of viewership will mean the director is allowed to continue telling stories in the world of Rebel Moon is unclear. Ultimately, it will depend on what sort of return A Child of Fire and The Scargiver have already given them on their investment.

Addressing his threequel plans, Snyder added, "That was four years ago that Kora supposedly killed Issa, so the idea is that she would be 17 now, floating around somewhere out there in hiding. She’s basically their Joan of Arc, and they’ve got to find her. For Jimmy especially, the idea that she might be out there really solidifies his mythological worth and turns him into a thing of meaning."

"The video game’s in the works still, they're plugging away," he said of additional plans to expand Rebel Moon. "And then the making-of books, of course, are coming. There are two, one’s out already and the second one should be out soon."

Both Rebel Moon movies are now streaming on Netflix.

I wish I could block every article that contained the words “director Zack Snyder”.

@tvor03 - you can. It’s called reading. When you see an article title and it contains the following letters next to each other, don’t open it. Z. A. C. K.🤪

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - When anyone here complains about something, the last thing they would ever want is for it to go away. The complaining is the point. It's the only point.

Oh... here we go again. Not a fan of snyders style anymore. Find his movies pretentious

I'll just wait for the rated R versions. He's gotta stop compromising, and making PG-13 movies. I know the lack of critical acclaim his movies typically receive, hurts his leverage, but still.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - yeah, I watched the first one, but I think I'll wait on the second.

At this point it's a scam. He had no one looking over his should, he had all creative freedom he could get and still he intentionally made those worse cuts just so he could say "Look there's a Snyder-Cut!".

@Demo2nd - thats how its always been. Despite the revisionism, there was NEVER a JL Snyder Cut until he made it up.

@Demo2nd - I posted about this on this site, Netflix is why there are different cuts of the movies. Hate the guy all you want, I don't lose sleep over this stuff, but you made a lot of assumptions about him without knowing what actually happened.

And again...

Snyder believes he is the truest artiste when he is just a poor man's Michael Bay.

The last (only?) great thing he ever did was Watchmen.

@DocSpock - well, both directors definitely know how to make shit look cool. A group of marines wingsuiting through Chicago while a massive worm is eating a building is something that is burned into my retina

@bkmeijer1 -

Oh yes. Both can film spectacular fight scenes & mind-blowing visuals. As cinematographers & FX guys, they are superb.

As directors...not so much.

@DocSpock - I don't mind them as directors, as long as they have a strong team behind them in the other departments. With the right writers and producers, they could make great movies.

@DocSpock - Watchman is devisive too, so...

@Itwasme -

True, but I love it. Dropping nukes instead of squids to make the world come together didn't bother me.

I love both the graphic novels & the movie as different experiences.

@DocSpock - I like the ending of the movie tbh, but I felt like his tone was counter to the points of the book.

@DocSpock - true, at least Bay doesn’t have any pretentious bullshit on his films he knows what he’s doing. I would love to see Snyder tackling a Pearl Harbor esque story, like an epic romance that would be a disaster

Michael Bay made movies that people wanted to see in a theater. A bunch of them.

I'm going to have to throw 300 in there as well. Both that and Watchmen are great movies. The rest not so much.
DocSpock
DocSpock - 4/24/2024, 3:57 PM
@Goldboink -

I agree with you again.

In my review, I gave Watchmen 9/10 stars. I gave 300 8/10.

I gave Man of Steel 6.5/10 because of the GREAT action/fight scenes, Great villains, & visuals.

Unfortunately, the Snyder train streaks downhill from there until it crashes into the sea.

@DocSpock - I mostly enjoyed MOS, especially the beginning and the whole codex thing. The Pa Kent the Cynic thing put me off and the end was somewhat weird but it's a watchable movie with characters that you mostly care about. Aside from that the problem is you just don't give a crap about any of the characters.

extended slow motion farming scenes for another hour then?

An extended cut could really help Part 1 with its quick pacing but Part 2? Dunno how much different it could end up being...

If this becomes a trend..then oh man... :D

If it's really that different and six hours long, I think they should've released this as a 6-episode mini-series instead

I’ve been waiting for the R cuts. Haven’t watched the pg-13 versions for that reason. Reserving my judgement on his movies after seeing his true vision.

If they're anything like the Snyder Cut, they'll will be overblown, self indulgent and not much better. The Snyder cut could be a good 2.5 hour film.

If, as a director you have have an "extended cut" that's an hour longer, then you're not very good

Notice how nobody ever says "you need to wait for the extended Villeneuve cut or the extended Nolan cut?
