Despite fairly low estimates, the film exceeded expectations at the North American box office this past weekend with an impressive $51 million, while it currently holds a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The results below clearly show that there will still some of you not that impressed, but for the 16% of you who revealed that you have yet to check out the 3D sci-fi epic, be sure to read my 5* review of the film by clicking HERE.

In the distant future, two superpowers control Earth and fight each other for all the solar system's natural resources. It won't measure up to its insane expectations, but its story-telling is inspired. The cast is fantastic (except for Logan Marshall-Green) and the horror elements are up to 11. If you're looking for an action movie, you will be disappointed - it's not a bug hunt.

@Tainted87 "the horror elements are up to 11"... out of what, 1000? I get terrified of most horror films quite easily, but watching Prometheus I was thoroughly bored.

I liked it!! I think many people who were expecting to have so much in the film are forgetting it's only the first part in a 2 part Prequel.

@Tainted87 I've never seen it, I never got around to it and then when I heard about Prometheus I thought I'd wait and watch it later, to see if Prometheus added anything for me. But after how disappointing I found Prometheus, I've decided not to go out of my way to see Alien. If I happen to get the chance to watch it one day in the future, then I will, but Prometheus did very little to convince me Alien would be a 'must see'.

Well, go over the scene again. The Prothean wakes up after a thousand(?) of years and three factors greet him.
One, there is an expedition team of humans, and if memory serves him, we were extremely primitive last time he read up on us - and his race wanted us dead.
Two, among this team is a woman who is angry and bombarding him with questions he doesn't understand - this goes hand-in-hand with the first point.
Three, the first to communicate intelligibly with him is a synthetic life-form resembling a human, resembling a [Prothean].

Alien is a classic - the forerunner to future-based sci-fi horror. To disregard it without having even seeing it is being willfully ignorant.
AC1
AC1 - 6/14/2012, 12:50 PM
@Tainted87 like I said, I'm not disregarding it, I'm just not making a conscious effort to see it. If the time comes when I have the opportunity to watch it, then I will, but after Prometheus I'm not going to go out of my way. It would be ignorant if I said "I will never watch Alien because Prometheus sucked, I'm totally against that film even though I've never seen it". I'm not saying that, I'm just saying that on my list of priority films to see, Alien may have dropped down a few spots based on Prometheus.

Watched it again. Made more sense this time around. Still a lot of unanswered questions though. But near as I can figure, the Engineer went crazy at the end because he was infected with the black goo. You could see the effects on his face. Apparently that stuff also makes you go crazy. The same thing happened to the geologist dude. Still not sure what the final result is of their weapon of mass destruction is supposed to be.

I think the reason everyone is so torn on this movie is that they had you waiting and waiting for this jaw dropping revelation where it would instantly tie everything together but it didn't get to that point. I think it really was an origin piece and that the revelation moment is coming in the sequel. I liked it and thought it was a very interesting movie. I will see the sequel.

Loved it i have no idea why everyone says its lacking in answers i thought it was all pretty well explained it just needed you to concentrate and think it over it was all their on screen, except for the only one that left me thinking was why did they want to destroy us? And that one is clearly within the film left for a sequel and even if they dont ever answer it who gives a shit, i think it answers much harder questions then that in the film anyway, their are millions of classic films out their where you dont get all the answers kinda like ummm, mmm in LIFE! The only thing i really disliked about the film was the ending purely because it felt like the film easily could of been a standalone film they could of just tied it up, instead the idea of their being a sequel kind of takes away from the feeling of this being standalone, so you feel a little disappointed at the end. But their was nothing wrong with creatures, it was fairly scientifically correct when organisms are created reptiles and fish are usually the first breeds formed, just like the way the creatures were similar to both of those.

The other thing that gets me is everyone is questioning why the Space Jockey wasn't left in his seat like the one in Alien. How about this wasn't the same one? David even states in the movie that there are several ships on the planet. As well they're not even on the same planet as in Alien. Was that not a simple pick up?
Afro
Afro - 6/14/2012, 1:17 PM
I felt the movie was very good. People are not paying attention to what was said in the movie. They ASSUMED that they maybe the creators of the human race. Everything they was on an assumption not facts. The old artifacts that brought them to the planet did not state it either in the movie when they were explaining it. I agree with monkeyballs3 lol that there is two different fractions of the engineers. The one in the beginning looks more on the religious front and the others military.

For all of you who think that the movie was some great masterpiece with an intelligible story, I dare you to answer at least five of these questions without adding something that wasn't in the movie, or disregarding something that was.

The huge flaw of this movie is that it leaves the story up to the audience, this works sometimes when a movie does not contradict itself and is asking questions based on things the audience knows. Here's a little bit of a newsflash, humans have been pondering their origins for thousands of years, leaving the motivations of our creators up to the audience to figure out is just lazy, after the first 30 seconds of the movie, what did Ridley Scott and the LOST guy even bring to the discussion?

If you apologist answer is that I need to wait for the next movie to get anything close to a complete story, then I ask you, will the next movie be free? Was I supposed to get a 50% discount on this movie because it was only half of a story?

The movie is great visually, Fassbender does a lot with his character, and the opening scene is very intelligent; other than that there are absolutely no redeeming factors. The story is terrible. This may not have been a problem if people would just call it a simple popcorn flick like an "Independence Day" but people are treating it like an "Inception" which is just ridiculous.

If your IQ is over 100 you will be very disappointed in the story, otherwise I guess it is mind blowing.

@ACira - See Alien. To claim it went down a couple notches on your must-see list because of Prometheus is similar to this statement:

"Raiders of the Lost Ark dropped down a couple of notches on my must see list because I saw Kingdom of the Lost Skull first." (or whatever that shit part four to Raiders was called)

Alien is a classic, not just in the geek crowd, but any crowd. (But especially the geek crowd!!) So, never, and I mean never, hold off on seeing a classic because someone is rolling out a prequel 20 or 30 years later. Imagine if Star Wars was released in retard Lucas order, nobody would have stuck around long enough to see the Ewoks defeat the Empire if Phantom Menace was the first movie out of the gat.

Kudos for the sheer philosophical scope of this movie and laying groundwork for the broader Alien universe, but let's be real - this film fell FLAT on its face due to poor casting / under-utilization of talents (except Fassbender, brilliant yet again) and a poor narrative with way too many plot holes even for a thought-provoking film piece.
Humby
Humby - 6/14/2012, 2:43 PM
The film just had a tad too much going on, as far as the writing goes... (SPOILER WARNING)

For starters, there were too many useless characters. For example, the two scientists who got lost in the caves/ship and died from the amphibious worm-creature served absolutely no purpose to the plot. Well, one of them did come back to life as a murdering zombie, but all he did was make his way back to the ship and kill more of the useless characters we didn't care about. These characters took away precious screen time from the characters we actually do care about, and their deaths diluted the impact of the main characters' deaths.

Second, the black liquid was used a crutch rather than an intelligent plot device. The following outcomes all resulted from the black goo: (1) If you ingest it, it will decompose your body, (2) If you are exposed to it, it will cause rapid evolution like the worms on the ground of that chamber, (3) If you're exposed to it after you die, it will bring you back as a murderous zombie, and (4) it will apparently turn your semen into miracle working mutants.

The combination of those two things led to just too many things going on in the movie, and it made the movie feel a little too mindless space-horror rather than the intelligent thinker it could have been. Other than that, I really had no problem with the overall story, the questions it asked, and the questions it raised. I thought those points of the movie were all handled wonderfully. And not to mentioned it looked amazing.

Also, the alien C-Section scene was just absurd. As much as I like the fact that the first (albeit giant) facehugger was born from a human, I think they were hoping that the audience would be cringing so hard that they would ignore how unrealistic that scene was.

I'm sorry monkeyballs, but you failed, you stated that the Engineers only created homo sapiens, which is not an idea supported by the movie. Having based the answers to other questions off of this false foundation you missed those questions as well.

The one part of the movie that is actually based on real world scientific theory and you missed the whole point by a mile. Good job.

I don't follow why people aren't understanding the plot.

Aliens made us, we go find them, they don't want anything to do with us (and they also have their own issues they're dealing with).

The planet Prometheus lands on is not LV426 from ALIEN. Thus it doesn't matter how the ship is positioned in the crash. Pay attention, fools.
