José Padilha Talks About What His Take On RoboCop Will Be

Director José Padilha recently sat down to talk about what his vision for RoboCop is going to be, as well as says he plans on casting an American for the role of Alex Murphy.

While chatting with Coming Soon RoboCop director José Padilha talked a little bit about what we might see from his version of the character. He also said that he hopes to be able to start filming early next year. Another thing that was touched on was that with some many people from different countries being cast in American superhero roles, Padilha said he plans to keep the role of Alex Murphy American.

"RoboCop' the first movie was fantastic, but even if there was no movie, the concept of 'RoboCop' is brilliant, first because it lends itself to a lot of social criticism, but also because it poses a question, 'To when do you lose you humanity?' The way it does that is by replacing body parts with machine parts, and that's very smart because guess what? It's going to happen!"

"I have my take on it, and I can tell you this: In the first 'RoboCop' when Alex Murphy is shot, gunned down, then you see some hospitals and stuff and then you cut to him as RoboCop. My movie is between those two cuts. How do you make RoboCop? How do you slowly bring a guy to be a robot? How do you actually take humanity out of someone and how do you program a brain, so to speak, and how does that affect an individual?"

"We need an American RoboCop, man. RoboCop is an American guy, his name is Alex Murphy."

As stated above Padilha is shooting to start shooting the movie early next year, which looks to be a tall order considering he hasn't even found his Alex Murphy yet.

sounds boring if you ask me, sounds like the only thing it will have to do with the original is the namesake

I'm hoping this RoboCop will be more flexible and faster instead of just a bulletproof C3-PO.

I ACTUALLY THINK THE DESIGN OF ROBOCOP SHOULDN'T BE TOO MESSED WITH, IN A REALISTIC WAY THE DESIGN IS PRETTY ON POINT, YOU START SLIMMING HIM DOWN AND TAKING AWAY THAT MECHANIZED BULLET PROOF BULK AND MASS AND WHAT YOU'LL HAVE IS FRIGG'N TERMINATOR WITH A FACE. THERE'S A REASON ROBOCOP "WORKS"..IF YOU MISS WHAT WELLER DID WITH THE ROBOTIC MIME MOVEMENTS THE VOICE..IF YOU DONT GET THAT FEEL, IT'S NOT GONNA WORK..WIND UP WITH ANOTHER FRIGG'N "CATWOMAN" MOVIE..THE NAME BUT NOT WHAT YOU WERE EXPECTING.

FOUND SOME CONCEPTS..

The concept art in the Robocop Banner up top is around what I'd like. definitely should be armored, but also, faster, stronger and more agile. Bionic Man meets Judge Dredd.

@Gunsmith, those concepts are cool, but it's too "japanese manga style" for my taste, you know?

@returnhangar - That's exactly the point.

If he said "We're doing the same movie only modernizing it," that'd piss-off all the fans. Who needs the same movie again?

The fact that he's trying to do something new is a plus. It shouldn't be connected w/the original. The original's a masterpiece...which they already exploited to death.

(On the other hand, I think the reason we never saw all the development stuff he's talking about here is that, really, there just isn't much story potential in it. But we'll see.)

I think they shouldn't be making this movie...too many remakes/sequels/reboots in Hollywood these days

@phlemgbot after seeing the concept art gunsmith posted i withdraw my comment and am now more interested, i got the impression the director was not even gonna give us the look we were familiar with even in a modernized sense but after what i saw, im interested

I'm up for a reboot. Interested in this guy's concept.

@TheWingedWonder: I do agree that there are a lot of reboots, and remakes, but most of them are ones that are necessary. Most of them will also allow people to watch the orginals if they never had before. I never saw the original THE THING movie until after seeing the trailer for the new movie. So there is some good in prequels, remakes, reboots.

GUNSMITH@ those concepts are too futuristic for my taste. They look cool but not what Robocop should look.
Like you said keep Robo bulky and robotic. Running Robocop would be cool but no to acrobatic ninja Robocop.

Anyway Patrick Wilson, Michael Fassbender or Christian Bale as Robocop. Someone who can look robotic and emotionless and can give Robo a strong deep voice.

this concept arts make me think that they gonna make robocop as superhero !! what a freakin idea !!
if they go into this way instead the realistic style of the original, the movie gonna surrely failed !!

I like this interview, the idea of seeing him actually turned into RoboCop.

The freakin' perfect original was about this man/machine rediscovering his humanity, it seems this new one will be about the process of losing his humanity.

Interesting stuff.

I actually would prefer them to do somthing fairly different from the original. If they try to copy and paste the 1st one, then whats the point? I just really hope they do the film justice because I am from just outside of detroit and this is one of those "detroit" based movies that makes people in michigan proud. Even though the original made the future detroit look like a hell hole. We dont care, we just want our name out there.

Dont change the cities location mother fudgers!

The concept art does look a bit flashy. Not to mention that the only way any actor is going to be able to pull off a three-point stance in a suit of armor is if there is no actor at all...in other words, they'll have to CGI the hell out of the thing.

I say to hell with a remake or reboot or whatever. They should go the route of Aliens and Predator after their franchises ran out of steam and adapt Robocop Vs. The Terminator into a film. I'd see it.

@xXkryptoniteXx "keep in mind robocop was inspired by iron man"
WTF !! you're serious???
it's a joke !!
Robocop is definitely not a superhero and is not at all inspired by Iron Man!
Robocop is the intersection of Frankenstein crossed with Judge Dredd and terminator!
it can't be compared to a superhero movie ?!
it's a machine programmed to do justice, which evolved in the real world and not in a comic's fantasy world! it's a science fiction anticipation movie much more realistic !
Murphy is the basic cop who dies in service and was transformed in a machine, he is not a basic hero with superpower ?!!
it's much more dramatic and psychological than this!
first of all, it's a story bout a man who lost is humanity !!
