Production is set to begin on Saturday, September 15 in Toronto on Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures' and Columbia Pictures' RoboCop, directed by Jose Padilha. The film stars Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.

The screenplay is by Josh Zetumer and Nick Schenk, based on the 1987 motion picture written by Edward Neumeier & Michael Miner. The film is produced by Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, with Bill Carraro serving as executive producer. The film will be released in the US on August 9, 2013.

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex's life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Commenting on the announcement, Padilha said, "It's exciting to think that we're going to be starting production on 'RoboCop.' I have a dream cast and an incredibly creative production team, and we are all supremely dedicated, working together to make a movie that will not only live alongside the first film but also break new ground, be relevant for modern audiences, and stand on its own."

Lula Carvalho is the Director of Photography. The production designer is Martin Whist. The editor is Daniel Rezende. Costume Designer is April Ferry. VFX Supervisor is James E. Price.

I was honestly more interested in this when Hugh Laurie was still involved. It's still got a really good cast though... I guess I'll reserve judgement until I see a little more.

I couldn't agree more. They missed their chance with the 25th anniversary. 3 months left and no word yet.

@ Noomis

I am being honest when I say I think Robocop was actually a good movie. It was tale of identity, humanity and vengeance wrapped up in a kooky sci fi trope combined with that "reality in a fun house mirror" routine that Verhoeven was really good at.

@damntree
That's a bold statement coming from someone with Bill from Bill & Ted as their Avatar. A lot of folks don't think too highly of that movie either (But I ain't one of em).
Liking or not liking a movie doesn't necessarily reflect one's intellect. 1) Why comment on a movie you apparently hate (other than to troll?) 2) It ain't a classic cause it's old, it's a classic cause of the statement it made when it came out. I also happen to think that Peter Weller, Ron Cox, and Kurtwood Smith are great actors.

All that said, I ain't blind. I acknowledge the original Robocop's many flaws. I ain't one of them folks. But I still think it was good. It was movie with balls. Those are few and far between.

Robocop was quality when it first came out, i watched it all the time as a kid, so maybe 13 yrs olds watching it now may think its shit but in the day this was top draw entertainment and im all for a remake, whats not to like a half robot cop going nuts at bad guys with an automatic pistol, come on!

I may not be entirely sold on this movie yet, but... damn, that cast is amazing. Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, AND Jackie Earle Haley?!? Hell, even if the movie sucks, we're pretty much guaranteed some stellar performances!

damn hope I don't see them filming cuz I hate to see production shit live. Once the movie is out all I can think about is that it was filmed down the street from me. it ruins the movie for me.

The original movie is [frick]ing art.

This should have been a seq-boot like Tron Legacy. CG Weller's face to look younger and tweak his design slightly, fully cg animated body too.

RoboCop 3 deserves to be remade. It had a cool story but Fred Dekker messed it up.

Man, I'm really concerned about this one. First they pussify Total Recall, now they want to do a PG-13 Robocop? Sounds like a recipe for suck.
