Some Updates On The Black Hole Remake

Director Joe Kosinski(Tron Legacy) Talks about the direction the remake of the 70's Disney sci-fi movie will take, and what he hopes to keep from the original.

If you haven't seen the original Black Hole it's...not great! But does have its moments. I always remember certain bits that stood out for me watching as a kid, and director Joe Kosinski remembers the same stuff. In an interview with MTV he gives some updates on the films progress..

Kosinski says right off the bat that this isn't a return to the world created in the 1979 film. He explains:

This one will be a re-imagining. For me, it would be taking ideas and iconic elements that struck me as timeless and cool and preserving them while weaving a new story around them that's a little more '2001: [A Space Odyssey].

In the original story, the crew of the spaceship Palamino stumbles across the "lost" ship the U.S.S. Cygnus, hovering on the edge of an immense black hole. Once aboard, they find that the ship is manned by robots (including a large killer robot named Maximilian - seen in the photo above) with it's only human being Dr. Hans Reinhardt - an eminent scientist, missing for the past twenty years. His plan: to enter the Black Hole. Whether Dr. Reinhardt is a genius or a mad-man, one thing is for sure, he will not be denied his life's dream.

Kosinski's remake will tell a new story around a much bigger budget and with 30 years of new scientific knowledge on black holes.

From a conceptual point of view, we know so much more about black holes now, the crazy things that go on as you approach them due to the intense gravitational pull and the effects on time and space. All that could provide us with some really cool film if we embrace it in a hard science way.

What will be carrying over from the original movie is Maximilian, the design of the ship, and the thing that stuck with me most, SPOILER, the graphic death of one of the main characters at the hands of old Maxy.

I saw The Black Hole as a little kid. What sticks out most is the robot Maximilian. The blades and the vicious killing of Anthony Perkins. That freaked me out and that's definitely going to be an element that will be preserved. The design of the Cygnus ship is one of the most iconic spaceships ever put to film.

I watched the old movie fairly recently and to say it's uneven is an understatement. Like I said, there is lots of potential there for a great remake/imagining/boot..whatever! I also hope they have a nod to the crazy, trippy fire and brimstone ending of the original in which SPOILER Maximilian and Dr. Reinhardt end up fused together in Hell!

I remember re-watching this online a few months back when you first found news about the remake!

I hope this ends up on screen, it sounds like he has a firm grip on what he wants to do with the concept.

Yeah, I thought it was awesome too, I mean there are obviously look odd now, but all things considered it was a fun movie. I'd love to see a version with hard science, I think it could add a lot of great depth.

Nah, I know hat you mean, some bits stood out and raised it up, but seriously it can't be considered a really great film because there was just as much silliness and really rubbish parts.

gtrman, that scene isn't as graphic as you describe when you actually watch it again! But yeah, for its time and when your a nipper its very shocking. Not only that, he flings him into the computers below and electrocutes him after the swirly guts!

What happened at the end? Did they live or no? It was a little screwy.

lol you guys never cease to make my day.

I thought the ending was pretty excellent as far as rip offs of the 2001 ending go. It was nice and nebulous, did they make it to heaven? Or was that another galaxy? An alternate reality? Who knows.
It isn't a great film, but for it's time ror, it wasn't a terrible scifi film.It wasn't starwars or anything, but it was fun.

Sounds cool to me. I saw the movie as a kid and remember enjoying it. If one has any current knowledge of black holes it only ups the ante. I'm sure most here have heard of Quatum Mechanics and the Theory of Realtivity (Special and General). Black holes are one of the instances in the universe that the shizzle meets the fizzle.

Both tell us of a reality that is so counter intuitive as to seem preposterous. Yet when trying to examine what we observe or more accurately examining what we tried to observe, neither has let us down until we meet things like black holes. Anyway all I can say is study some modern physics. Its the most mind blowing experience I have ever encountered.

Especially if you're under the influence of one or several amazing substances juggy. That was always one of my favorite pastimes during college, get messed up and watch The Universe, or Karl Sagan on the history channel.

I can't recommend that enough.

How can you say the original was not good? Ok the, the effects were bad...but look at the year it was made! Ok, the robots were a bit cartoony, but it was a Disney film. What did you expect? This film is ranked up there with films like The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno. These movies were made in a time when plot was the driving force of a film, not like today where CGI and explosions make a movie. Yeah, its my opinion, but you shouldn't be judgmental to a film made in 1979.

A REMAKE WOULD BE EXCELLENT, JUST WATCH THIS THEN THINK OF A REBOOTED VERSION WITH CGI OF TODAY...

Barring fantasia, this movie has by far the most enjoyable and engaging soundtrack of any other disney flick. Still listen to the main theme every once in a while

Look, I never said they film wasn't good, I said it wasn't GREAT, and it wasn't. You wanna talk shelf life? Star Wars came out in 1979..2001 came out in 1968! So don't give me the time period crap, it was a shoddily made film and could have been much better.

I agree it wasn't great Ror, but also comparing it to starwars and 2001? That's always going to be harsh, those were exceptions, most scifi was pretty bad then, so it does fit in time.

I dunno about all this remaking of the old classics. Some things should be left as is, are they going to redo Blade Runner, Forbidden Planet, or even Metropolis? Look at all the failures of recent remakes: Rollerball, Lost in Space, War of the Worlds and a certain sci-fi tv show I will not name. How about the sequels to movies/tv that did not need to be: T3, T4, Knight Rider, Flash Gordon, Star Wars "EP 1-3" and the list goes on. I am just saying sometimes you don't repaint the Mona Lisa and use crayons.

On the subject, I can't wait to see what they can do with this story. Loved it as a kid. Enjoyed the movie and I even had a picture book of The Black Hole. But I was just a little feller back then. I hope they make maximillion look freakin awesome and even more intimidating then the old version. I'm sure with this remake we should be in for a treat.......Or an epic disaster.

Surfin the Black Hole, R.R.

P.S. That sounded naughtier than expected. Oh Well, case 'o rum case 'o rum thats what I always say, CHEERS!!!!

i saw this when it was released and im watching right now while writing this, and it's still an awesome film! it;s just a good kids film but it's nice and dark/sinister ..
i love the mono dry music that adds that flavour off darkness and the cast is spot on.
For a remake? well im on for that, but i hope whoever makes it keeps Maximilian and vincent looking the same!

I really hope (if anything even comes of the production) that they cast this sucker properly and try to do justice to John Barry's score cause lets face it, that music in the film really adds so much to the mystique of it all and it really stood out for me as a kid, its inseparable.
Really hope this production takes flight and delivers cause its worth it! Oh and I want the black hole to be fairly faithful in likeness to the original or alternatively like the kick ass ones you see on the Discovery channel, totally bad ass and interactive :D
