STAR TREK Fan's Dying Wish Comes True Thanks To Director J.J. Abrams

Last week, a friend of a dying Star Trek fan took it to reddit to see if something can be done for Daniel, who has an aggressive and rare tumor, and has been given less than two months to live. His dying wish was to see Star Trek Into Darkness early. Now, his wish came true. Check it out...

On December 25th, Grady Hendrix posted on reddit a story about his friend Daniel, a dying Star Trek fan, who has a terminal cancer and less than two months to live. Daniel was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 38, and as his wife says, it's been a hell for him. Dan's dying wish was to see Star Trek Into Darkness early, or at least the 9-minute preview. This story spread across the internet in a big way. Director of the film, J.J. Abrams also saw it, and reached out to the family . Thanks to TrekMovie, we now know that Daniel saw a rough cut of the film. In a statement below, his wife thanks everyone for the support:

"Hi everyone, it’s Daniel’s wife, we are of course sworn to secrecy, BUT we are officially allowed to say we saw it and we enjoyed it IMMENSELY as a film and as a gesture…However; Daniel ‘hates’ being an ‘inspiring cancer story’ we his friends and loved ones would prefer for the update to have more of a heartfelt message of giving, especially during this season:

This is a story of us giving something to him, the ‘internet’ community giving something to him and ultimately being a heartwarming gift to our friends, family and so many others. This story of us (and of course JJ Abrams & Bad Robot) being able to give this surprise gift of a screening to a huge movie buff like Daniel, especially a film made by a film maker who obviously makes movies with such care, with a fan like Daniel in mind (and a person like me who knows slightly less about these things). Also, it was truly amazing that a film-maker so secretive as JJ Abrams was kind enough to show this to us.

It is also so wonderful for his friends & his family to finally hear some good news from us, They know how important film is to Daniel & could not think of a better way to please to him. So this gesture really has brought a lot of smiles all around.

It was a wonderful thing to see with Daniel and a wonderful thing to see Daniel enjoy – Making someone as ill as he is smile for any length of time really makes a difference. (At this point making me smile is good too)

This is also so poignant as JJ Abrams took so much care in the first Star Trek movie to at least TRY to get everything ‘right’ for the fans and we were so touched when he was concerned that we wouldn’t 100% enjoy the screening as it’s still being worked on…….Be assured we enjoyed it 110%! We are so grateful thank you, thank you, thank you...

Quite moving, and it's absolutely great to see that Abrams did this. Daniel is a big movie fan as well, and he has been running the New York Asian Film Festival with his friend who posted this story and some other people. It's amazing to see how all this came together, thanks to the internet and the support of a lot of people. A good deed, indeed.

Dang, this is like a real life 'Fanboys' . . . only this is with Star Trek and not Star Wars.

Props to Abrams. That's such a kind gesture.

Oh and yeah, I would wish for the same thing. Glad he got to see it. Very tragic to hear about a fellow movie lover. I couldn't think of a better last movie. But how did the wife get to see it. She's not dying. I mean I know she didn't marry him knowing he'd get sick and she'd get to see the movie early. Not really fair, was it her wish to? Do pre-widows get the same treatment as people dying? I can understand, but I'm thrilled to hear they liked it. Go Daniel! Best wishes.

^ EXCELLENT Idea but then again they said he didn't want to be an inspirational story. Would be cool for him to have that on the Extra's.

Aww this is amazing.
I like it when Hollywood looks past the fakeness and pretentious nature of the industry to give back to fans which make all the fame happen.

No one should ever have to go through what he is going through,
I deeply feel for him and I'm so happy his wish came true.

Wow. That's really cool of him. I'm sure it gets hard with these make a wish foundation things because there has to be some pressure on celebrities knowing that they can't get to everyone who makes a request. Very uplifting to know that Mr. Abrams reached out and made that gesture.

@themcdugalbugle I really hope you're joking. It wasnt "unfair" for the dying man's wife to watch it too. Her husband is dying! How "fair" is that? It's JJ's movie and if he wanted to let her see it too because God knows she's suffering too. It's just a freakin movie, I hope a million people get to see it before you do.

P.S. And yes, most Make A Wish type gifts extend to friends & families of the afflicted as possible. What, do you expect sick people to go Disneyland & Hawaii alone? It's bad enough they are alone in their pain, you want them alone in their joy too???

Man it's so sad, I had a friend go got a tumor at the bottom of his brain and they found it too late. Sucks that we have all this technology and power but cnt cure stuff like that. Besides that I'm jealous cause I want to see this movie badly. One of my most anticipated movie of 2013.

I'm glad that he was able to see it. I can't imagine how it would feel to see a movie trailer and know that you wouldn't live long enough to see the movie. I'm very sorry for the man and his love ones. Hats off to Abrams for bringing them some happiness.

@DocDrop Well, she could have been with him when he watched it, but she should have had blindfolds on and earplugs. Thousands of people loose loved ones in America each year and they don't get to see summer blockbusters 5 months early. I'm not saying she injected him with tumor poison in order to see the movie 5 months early. But like I said in my comment which you should have read, I understand why she got to see it too, she's the wife of the husband with the dying wish. It was probably his decision and if JJ's okay with it, then fine. I already got it, there was no reason for you to explain it. Pointless. And I'm a critic, so I'll get an early screening, so only a couple thousand people will see it before I do.

He also let a university professor that was dying do a cameo shot in the first Trek film if I recall. Pretty cool of him.
